Prince Harry's Wreath

So apparently Prince Harry has asked someone to lay a wreath on his behalf to honour the 80th anniversary of VJ Day.
I know the military meant a lot to him but he's being called out on it as he mentions his grandfather. I'd like to think he did this with the best intentions but the cynic in me wonders if he did it as a dig at William for only posting a message on social media.

I'm sure he released the letter with the very best of motives, honouring the dead and adding a personal family connection as many of us do when showing about past events.

I'm sure he would be shocked by the comments here as he still believes that he is living a life of service, a life where publicly released letters and statements are expected and normal. A life of service he thinks he has been living for 35 years. He believes his very existence is service. I disagree that he still has a public role and I find these publuc statements a bit sad but I doubt he cares.

On another note though at least attention is being given to this part of WW2, there is an interesting podcast about it on BBC sounds at the moment.

Speaking about past events not showing

I’m just glad that those who suffered under the Japanese are being remembered, I don’t care by whom. What they went through was unimaginable, and they didn’t talk about it because they were told not to. Heroes everyone of them.

Agree. My Uncle was murdered by the Japanese whilst a prisoner on the Burma Railway. It was an horrific death, we know because his friend survived.

Profhilodisaster · 19/08/2025 09:21

I find it all a bit sad, sad that he obviously and rightly still feels a close association with the military but that he is hovering on the outside of it all.

BigWillyHazyHarold · 19/08/2025 09:26

It's very sad. He was monumentally stupid and now he's stuck in a world where he's nothing and he still so desperately wants everything he had. His friends, his family, his life and purpose, everything he'd ever known. Threw it all away like yesterday's rubbish.

35 years of service?? Don't be so stupid, 'Haz'!

JSMill · 19/08/2025 09:03

So how was he able to do it? It’s very strange.

Two different things.

For the first Remembrance Sunday service he missed, Harry asked that a wreath be laid from him personally at the ceremonial stage, when the dignitaries lay wreaths. The Queen said no. (Other than the Sovereign and Consort those wreaths aren’t personal, they are placed by an individual to represent war dead in the various services/branches the individual is representing).

Harry could have, but didn’t, have a wreath laid on his personal behalf privately at the Cenotaph after the ceremony was finished and the march past had taken place. Anyone can do that. And that is what he has done now - had a wreath laid for him privately at the Arboretum after the service finished
, with a letter attached (and the Daily Mail briefed, because he doesn’t really mean it to be private).

I mean if William feels it's a dig at him maybe next time he'll do a bit more than get a lackey to post something on social media? I'm sure he can do it in between putting to chips on for the kids tea!

The headed crown paper and sign off with two titles - very mixed messages from someone who gave up the royal family/his family to live in America

I think the point is to emphasise that he is still Royal.
That's his whole thing. He has to keep getting on sm/ in the papers, making sure that his title is used. A wreath could have been left discretely.

That is heartbreaking Minnie, and a story that many families could tell. What soldiers suffered in the Japanese POW camps would be too traumatising to be taught in schools and therefore people just don’t know.

Sorry for derail.

He should've shown respect for his grandfather in life, particularly at the end stage.

Spot on !

Just horrific. I'm so sorry for your family, and for all those men whose lives were cut short in the most awful way. Those who survived would have suffered horrifically throughout the rest of their lives, too.

We will remember them. 💐

I remember my parents talking about this (Dad served with the RAF in WW2), and saying how cruel the Japanese were to POW.

@BigWillyHazyHarold

Hopefully the regular posters will know we are not the same person despite the very similar user name, don’t want to be accused of being a sock puppet!

BigWillyHazyHarold · 19/08/2025 10:22

Sorry @BigWillyLittleTodger! No definitely not the same person, just to be clear.

I don't usually frequent the Royal Family topic!

Those Burma railway testimonies make for very difficult reading. What a terrible thing for your family. I watched the coverage of the VJ Day commemoration, and I am glad that the veterans were honoured, and that survivors were able to tell their stories.

Welcome to this board! Get your hard hat on as I’m a regular poster on these boards as BigWilly and my name attracts a lot of robust response shall we say to put it mildly! They may think we are the same poster so be prepared! 😂

My Grandfather was given the military cross - awarded for his bravery going behind enemy lines to rescue the wounded as they feared capture more than death. It’s an award your comrades put you forward for and was therefore the medal he treasured most. He only started talking about his war time during the last couple of years before he died.

With all the pedophilic, adulterous, tax dodging crap that this family are mired in and yet who lays a bloody wreath is the most important issue?

No, pay attention. It’s because Harry has done something and therefore it must be terrible, that’s the important issue.

Thanks for the warning. I'm probably not going to post a lot tbf. I've dipped in once in a great while and seen a fair bit of batshittery...😄😉

Sorry for the derail @Profhilodisaster. I'll bow out now as the subject matter is really quite serious.

JSMill · 19/08/2025 10:56

@MinnieCauldwellI am so sorry to hear that. I think it’s awful how little attention is given to the war in the Far East. My dps, my aunt and uncle all went to separate schools in the 50s and each one had been taught by a teacher who had been in PoW camps in Asian and were visibly traumatised.

What an incredible story. One of the men on the programme last week said that they didn't speak of the horrors, understandably, but I wonder if many of them felt forgotten. I'm glad he was awarded the MC and had such a significant and tangible reminder. 💐

Yes, absolutely. Their “friend” Bryony Gordon writes for the Mail and has published various puff pieces about them, but even before that they have been giving stories to the Mail.

No pay attention it is because Harry did this and then alerted the DM to the fact that he did it. Poor Harry - left out in the cold. The Prince who didn't want the responsibilities but still clings to the title and has to pop up every now and again to remind us.
