Thanks, @bluegreygreen.

Thanks to @BasiliskStare and @BemusedAmerican for the summaries.

Good to know that the general tone of the book is better than the excerpts.

BasiliskStare · 14/08/2025 19:21

@CurlewKate - this won't help if you are listening to audible , but for interest the kindle book finishes at 70% of the way through there are some tappable footnotes - the remainder is notes - photographs and a bibliography.

Well by dint of ignoring any jobs I thought I was going to do today - I have finished. Large G&T methinks..

I didn’t like ostrich steak! Too chewy and gamey but crocodile was delicious 😋

Can't bear anything gamey.

A holiday rabbit dish nearly had the thing jumping all over again but in all the worng ways.

Is crocodile fishy or <ducks> 'just like chicken'?

I could give either a go.

Now off to catch up 😁

Wendy Berry, a royal housekeeper, not a fan of Sarah. Sarah quite entitled towards staff.

Didn't Wendy Berry write a (repressed? certainly hard to get hold of now) book about C&D ?

@BemusedAmerican

Sarah seems like she could have a great career in PR. Connects well, personable

I met S a small number of times, briefly, through work and would agree with that observation....I also have to say those who had a bit more contact with her than I did on the day(s) also came away impressed.

No idea about the behind the scenes family and financial stuff, some things are obviously kept well hidden.

I can just about imagine that, in another life, what she might have are people skills. She’s clearly a jolly extrovert and seems lighthearted, loud and confident.

But, probably because of her upbringing she also lacks any kind of moral compass, conscience or sense of responsibility which would be necessary to be successful in a serious longterm career.

I'll be interested to see what jeff thinks but I found it a bit like pork in texture and not fishy or like chicken. However, I lost my sense of smell 30 odd years ago so couldn't really give a good description of what it did taste like.

BemusedAmerican · 14/08/2025 21:37

Just finished the chapter on Summerhill and saw red. They allegedly tried to get a $40k kitchen for free. Lots of giant teddy bears around the place, which sounded creepy.

Sarah constantly taking vacations.

Edited

She did . I think it was banned in the U.K.? A relative in the US sent me a copy. It’s somewhere in the attic I think .

BemusedAmerican · 15/08/2025 01:16

I think the Vintage Read did that book as a read aloud on her YouTube channel.

CurlewKate · 15/08/2025 06:11

I’m actually feeling sorry for SF so far, which is not what I expected.

See what you think by the end, although I can sort of see what you mean in the early days. But each to their own opinion.

Anyway a more light hearted anecdote. I know nothing about Meatloaf apart from he sang Bat out of Hell but this rather endeared him to me.
During It's a Royal Knockout PA thought he(M) was paying a bit too much attention to Fergie so he tried to push M in the moat. M grabbed him by the lapels. Upon being told "You can't touch me, I'm Royal" , M said "I don't give a shit who you are , you push me in the moat and you're going in the moat"

Less lighthearted "You can't touch me, I'm Royal" seems to be a mantra PA has lived by. And , unfortunately , to a very large extent this has been true.

God what a loathsome twat. Good on Meatloaf.

BasiliskStare · 15/08/2025 07:46

@CurlewKate Actually SF does come out of the book with some redeeming features - but I'll leave it there.

@BemusedAmerican - If the bit about the building of Sunninghill made you see red , might I suggest you have a G&T before you read the bit about the sale. (Perhaps not if you are commuting at the time)

MrsLeonFarrell · 15/08/2025 07:59

Andrew and Trump are good examples of how difficult it is to hold the rich and/or powerful to account. I expect there are plenty more examples who fly under the radar because they aren't royal or politicians. I always suspect that those with real power don't make the headlines.

StartupRepair · 15/08/2025 09:02

Thanks to those who are reading. Is the writing less lurid than the DM version?

Crocodile is very white and tastes a bit like chickeny duck !
wasn’t fishy at all very tender.

Interesting but I think I'll give it a pass. I find duck a bit gamey too 😝

bluegreygreen · 15/08/2025 10:38

Interesting that some things are making readers feel sorry for SF - was wondering if the tone is also more evenhanded/less vindictive towards Andrew (thinking of the rugby kicking!)?

You have a generous relative. It's close to £30 on Amazon 😮

I'd be digging it out and sprucing it up 😁
