Yes, the writing is less lurid. Read through an enormous section of SF's finances before bed. Lownie quotes charity employees by name, ex-SF employees, and various news sources as well as an ex-SF lover.

SF seems to do charity work but hits then them with enormous expenses. Or she never actually donates the money. Some charities think she did a great job fundraising while others felt shafted.

PA working and away. When he does go home, he locks himself in a room, eats there, and watches golf on the television. He is a stranger in his own home.

I'm feeling sorry for PA.

I read an article about Beatrice? one or the other anyway, running the London Marathon in support of SF's charity.

This makes me wonder if those funds actually made it there and if they did how they got spent.

I've also ordered it. EDD 18-19 Aug. Looking forward to discussing it with other on this thread!

Interesting that some things are making readers feel sorry for SF - was wondering if the tone is also more evenhanded/less vindictive towards Andrew (thinking of the rugby kicking!)?

The tone is certainly more tart towards SF so far. PA is presented as a poor little rich boy and SF, while obviously wildly extravagant and misusing charitable funds, seems to be mostly criticised for being a bit common…..

Thanks. Jeff 🙂

Interesting but I think I'll give it a pass. I find duck a bit gamey too 😝

Me too Cathy ! ( particularly after a traumatic parsons nose incident! 🤮)
I wouldn’t rush to eat it again but I wouldn’t turn it down either, before anyone thinks I’m fancy, there used to be a little pub/ restaurant near me ( before COVID) that was doing these exotic dishes and I liked to try different things, sadly that is no longer on the menu.

Once you move on to Prince Andrew, Maxwell and Epstein it changes the tone!

Listened to half of it yesterday on Audible. Interesting to observe Sarah as a non-royal becoming entitled once she enters the family. I didn't expect to feel sorry for Andrew but I do because it's hard not to conclude he must have been abused. Beatrice and Eugenie have done well to go to uni, get jobs, support charities, marry sensible men and bring their children up quietly.

Ladedahlia · 15/08/2025 11:26

Abused in what way?

Why does he do that though? Surely it’s his choice?

Luddite26 · 15/08/2025 11:56

Both my daughters have met PA possibly in his role as DoY. First one he met at her workplace which was the Burberry Factory where they produced the raincoats. DD by that point was probably about 21 and ran the training school taking in 16 year old school leavers. Around 2010.
My younger DD met him when he visited her college in Keighley where she went one day a week as a year 11 in 2014.
Both DDs never said anything negative about their brief encounters he chatted and older DD offered him an application form and he laughed and declined!
I'm not insinuating anything in this anecdote and add I was not interviewed for the book.

It has been USAID that this book could bring down the RF. I don't agree. I think they firmly need to show PA he's out though.

How do you conclude that Andrew was abused? Does that come later in the book?

BemusedAmerican · 15/08/2025 12:08

Apparently Sarah is so bossy and overwhelming that PA can't handle it and shuts himself away. She seems very over the top.

So far all the comments from people who worked with him are that he alternates being a bully with being very remote and locked away. In his job, he was great flying but couldn't handle the people aspect.

The whole teddy bear obsession is weird.

There is also a scene when he returns to Gordonstoun and visits his old house. He annoys the master who shows him around by only talking about how the smell is the same and not remininiscing about people, events, etc.

IdaGlossop · 15/08/2025 12:14

Ladedahlia · 15/08/2025 11:26

Abused in what way?

Sexually abused as he allegedly lost his virginity at 11 and had his first sexual experience at 8.

The book recounts that the father of a school friend took his son and Andrew to a prostitute when they were 11 so they could lose their virginity. The book also refers to him having his first sexual experience at 8 but gives no more information.

😮😮I haven’t read the book but that can’t be true, surely? Do we know who Lownie’s source for that was?

The audio version doesn't have notes but a PP says he lists people he spoke to but doesn't say which person provided which information. I think it's reasonable to assume the information is accurate as lawyers read the manuscript.

The two of them together, guffawing and pranking, must have been unbearable when they were first together.

HilaryThorpe · 15/08/2025 12:42

It seems to me that apart from Andrew's time in the navy, neither of them has any boundaries. The reasons for that are obviously different, but they were bad for each other.

Haven’t got to that bit of the book yet.

IdaGlossop · 15/08/2025 13:47

Hands up if you iron your tights? You do, do you, Sarah Ferguson? That's not true, is it? Your staff iron them.

CurlewKate · 15/08/2025 13:48

Lots of little misogynist touches too “She missed her daughters’ first day back at school” Constant references to her weight.

BemusedAmerican · 15/08/2025 14:12

Well, for one thing, she signed a major contract with Weight Watchers, and had apparently been concerned about her weight for her adult life.

She also kept telling people that she could never be apart from her daughters yets spent lots of time in the US representing Wedgewood, on TV, doing interviews, etc. Her travel shows would also take her out of the UK.

I'm just blown away by all the contracts and deals that she signed. Her daily expenses were so high with an enormous household that she seems to have blown through the money. Everything was commodized.

Andrew is described by a naval superior as a good, basic officer. So far the tragedy of his life appears to be that he was dull, not too bright, and worked best in situations where he didn't have to think. Unfortunately he was borne into the RF.

BemusedAmerican · 15/08/2025 14:17

Just got to the part where Andrew tells the press that the RF has always been lying to them. The RF has to do damage control.

People throughout the book keep describing Andrew as naive. This was a great example of this quality.

Maybe the teddy bears are Andrew's Rosebud ( from Citizen Cain).

BTW, please forgive any typos. I'm commuting.
