@Holdingonfornow I think what Sophie C does next will depend to some extent on how the Sussexes behave.

Harry is close to defamation territory in a couple of his remarks. SC has a reputation to think about. He is not untouchable in the London courts. He's not an IPP now.

MrsLeonFarrell · 06/08/2025 09:17

It sounds like the Charity Commission handled a difficult case with tact and even handedness when Harry wanted them to say Harry:good SC:bad.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/08/2025 09:45

Clearly neither Harry not his trustees who tried to force Dr Chandauka outIt have listened at all to the Commission about charities being damaged by in-fighting….

But would anyone really expect him to?

It seems clear to me that Harry feels he must have the last word no matter what and to hell with what damage that causes to anyone else, so I can't say thiss is a surprise

Serenster · 06/08/2025 09:53

can we say that the report backs up some of Sophie’s examples such as trustee (Harry?) turning up to a meeting, proposing a pal is elected to the board, seconded by another pal and the chair has no say? That sort of structure/governance issue?

That could certainly be an example of what what a confusing and poorly governed process of delegation of powers would look like in practice - Harry does something and no-one has the ability to challenge him because the charity’s governance processes are not well-founded - so it becomes a personal challenge and no-one is willing to take that on.

sorry I missed that Serenster had already posted this

MummyJ12 · 06/08/2025 10:07

Absolutely @Serenster. I think that this is also why the commission had to state that there hadn’t been over-reaching too. Because of the lack of delegation and clarity, it was impossible for Harry to over-reach in his role. Exactly as he wanted it. The charity is now having to sort itself out to ensure that there are clearly defined roles and delegations.

The official statements from Sentebale.

Dr Sophie Chandauka MBE, Chair of Sentebale said:

“I appreciate the Charity Commission for its conclusions which confirm the governance concerns I raised privately in February 2025. The experience was intense, and it became a test of our strategic clarity and operational resilience. We have continued to directly serve children and young people in Lesotho and Botswana with the steadfast support of long-standing funders, strategic partners, and community leaders. Our phenomenal team will directly serve more than 78,000 children and young people this year, matching or exceeding our impact in 2024 at a time of acute need in the region. I thank every dedicated colleague and the courageous new Board members who have stayed focused on the mission in the face of unprecedented media glare. The unexpected adverse media campaign that was launched by those who resigned on 24 March 2025 has caused incalculable damage and offers a glimpse of the unacceptable behaviours displayed in private. We are emerging not just grateful to have survived, but stronger: more focused, better governed, boldly ambitious and with our dignity intact. Despite the recent turbulence, we will always be inspired by the vision of our Founders, Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso, who established Sentebale in memory of their precious mothers, Princess Diana and Queen ‘Mamohato. To all who believe in our mission: please walk with us as Sentebale recovers, renews, and rises to meet the hopes and expectations of the next generation.”

Iain Rawlinson, Trustee of Sentebale said:

“I am grateful to the Charity Commission for the thoroughness of its work. With its findings, and with clarity provided by the Action Plan, the transformation work envisioned from 2023 can now be completed. This will propel the Charity’s strategy forward for providing solutions addressing health, wealth and climate resilience for children and young people in Southern Africa and will provide comfort to all our stakeholders in Africa and internationally that the organisation’s governance arrangements have been updated and are complete. This will in turn facilitate our due diligence processes with individual donors and major funding institutions who are keen to work with us to support our strategy.”

Dr Bhakti Hansoti, Trustee of Sentebale said:

“I am pleased the Charity Commission has placed its confidence in Sentebale, the current Board and its leadership team. This affirmation allows us to continue the critical work we do—work that is needed now more than ever. In a time of global uncertainty and declining foreign assistance, funding for essential services in Southern Africa is increasingly limited. And the effect will be felt most by young Africans. They not only face immense health challenges, from ongoing challenges with HIV and TB and new threats such as mpox and VHF, but often lack the resources to recover, build wealth, and support their families. Sentebale exists to change that reality. The Charity Commission’s findings reaffirm the direction we’ve been taking. It’s important amidst all the noise to highlight the Commission’s concerns centered around governance—specifically, issues that pertained to the previous Board. Today, Sentebale is governed by a new Board which is committed to best practice. I’m honoured to be a part of this small but dedicated team that we will be building upon soon. We’re focused on instituting robust governance practices and policies to ensure transparency, accountability, and effectiveness.”

Carmel Gaillard, Executive Director of Sentebale said:

“The conclusion of the UK Charity Commission’s case review marks an important moment of reflection and of recognition. Despite the understandable uncertainty this process created, our entire team never wavered. Their commitment to the young people and communities we serve remained steadfast, and our work continued without interruption. We are profoundly grateful for our partners across Lesotho and Botswana. Their trust in us as one of the region’s most respected and reliable implementing partners has meant everything. They stood by us, confident in our impact, our values and in the integrity of our work. With the Commission’s review now closed, we move forward with focus and clarity, continuing to serve, uplift, and empower the young people of Southern Africa.”

Harry won't like that.

jamnpancakes · 06/08/2025 12:05

I imagine Harry is very disappointed in this ruling. He reacted like a baby throwing his toys out of the pram. The bullying allegations are not the remit of the enquiry as they have stated and it is something that is extremely difficult to assess even if it were. He has walked away from something that was allegedly so dear to himself instead of saying " you know what ? Let's get this sorted" . To me that says it all. He's a weak man who wants it all his way.

Exactly and his statement about the report just goes to confirm how vindictive he can be when he doesn't get things his way !

Profhilodisaster · 06/08/2025 12:30

Apparently he's going to set up a new charity .

caringcarer · 06/08/2025 12:39

Thedom · 06/08/2025 07:45

I too thought Harry had quit. Is this a bit like him quitting the RF, but he didn't really!

Has the full report been released or just the summary for the media? SC has said she has all the evidence to prove what she is saying. The charity commission agreed with her complaint about poor governance, she is the one who took that complaint to the charity commission. They also seem to confirm the patron operated outside of the rules of how a patron should operate, which seems to be par for the course if Invictus is anything to go by.

Hopefully, we get to see the evidence of bullying which SC said she presented to the commission, and would be interested to see Harry's threatening message about her refusing to back up Duchess Difficult.

This. I think Harry thinks he is above following as my rules and can simply do as he pleases.

Because he done such a sterling job with his previous charity and foundation.

TheAutumnCrow · 06/08/2025 13:09

Bloody hell, he didn’t even set up Invictus. The professionals employed by the Firm did that under the badge of the Royal Foundation, iirc.

He was then gifted the ‘founding patron’ title when he flounced to try and keep him with some toys inside his pram.

He has zero experience himself of setting up anything.

What an immature, flouncy prat.

Exactly, he’s clueless, he will probably expect his new charity to arrive gift wrapped at his front door.

BigWillyLittleTodger · 06/08/2025 13:15

And what’s the betting it won’t be a charity but a convenient “Foundation” 🙄

TheAutumnCrow · 06/08/2025 13:26

I wonder if he’ll make a fuss about the use & ownership of the name ‘Sentebale’.

Sorry, Harry. You don’t own the word.

jamnpancakes · 06/08/2025 13:29

In the same area I wonder ? Talk about diluting efforts 🙄

I doubt it, TheAutumnCrow - it's far more likely to be "yesterday's interest" now there's nothing he can use it for to benefit himself

Unless he can somehow avoid the performances we've seen at past ones I'm expecting Invictus to go the same way sooner or later, which on the face of it would be a shame as it's clearly a worthwhile cause
Luckily, however, it's not the only one which serves the same demogaphic, and luckily again the others aren't infested by H&M

TizerorFizz · 06/08/2025 14:02

I think it’s pretty clear that they all argued with each other and didn’t have clear policies and processes in place to avoid confusion and mismanagement. That included Harry’s role and that of the chair. They have been given an action plan by the Charities Commission. There are details of the findings and what went wrong and why on the Government's web site. It’s pretty easy to follow.

Profhilodisaster · 06/08/2025 14:22

Harry has never worked in a proper job so wouldn't know a policy or how to adhere to one if it slapped him round the chops.

MummyJ12 · 06/08/2025 14:28

The Sussex squad are now attacking the Charity Commission on X. 🙄 At least the CC will have a clear idea of what SC has had to deal with.

BemusedAmerican · 06/08/2025 14:37

I completely agree. Sophie's best protection was to do that interview after Harry went to the press. It won her the support of reasonable people.

TizerorFizz · 06/08/2025 14:39

@Profhilodisaster I agree. But there were paid progressional people at the charity. I suspect it was Harry’s way or sulking and they didn’t stand up to him so the way it was run fell short of what’s expected. Then they failed to get money in and they couldn’t work with each other and said it was bullying.
