I am confused. Why is this being commented on when it is a thread about a book on the Yorks?
I have followed this thread and not seen what it has to do with anything

Exactly there are several hundred pages of threads about Meghan. Harrys weird defence of them is at least relevant but yet again a woman who has said nothing is being dragged into a thread about a couple who seemingly were protected from absolutely horrific behaviour and are still in the Royal fold.

Thedom · 05/08/2025 07:12

am I being very boring if I say I am much more interested in the national security stuff, and the exploitation of women and girls?

I agree with you, hopefully the book itself has gone more into depth on his time as a Trade Envoy, but Andrew Lownie has already said he was blocked at every attempt to get more access, would be interesting to see PAs' expense reports during that period.

CurlewKate · 05/08/2025 07:13

I wonder if people’s reaction to today’s extract will depend to some extent on age. I was around and an adult at the time, so none of this is news to me really, except the specifics of some of her creditors and the actual amounts…

I agree. I would very much like to see some disclosure of these papers. Of course I suppose we can all draw inferences from the secrecy around them, none of them good.

I think that is why it has been sealed till 2065 or whenever. I think the expenses will be astronomical and there will be an absolute public outcry.

This is why QE2 bailed Sarah out repeatedly for six figures....gotta keep up the facade that all is normal in the House of Windsor. Wouldn't want Joe public knowing how out of control Sarah was

No I’ve known about. I’m 60 but to see it all laid out in black and white is mind blowing. Such excess and not caring about the ‘little people’ is quite stomach churning tbh.

Here it is, @Weepixie:

What a read!
All that wasted food 😥
I do wonder if Prince Harry's wife thought her lifestyle would be similarly extravagant, and is disappointed to discover that it is not.

Showing my bias here- but it’s just what I expect from monarchies!🤣

TheAutumnCrow · 05/08/2025 07:28

I suppose we have been sold a diet of individual royals going rogue, being characters, making errors, flirting with extremism etc - but what Lownie is putting together through a series of books is a pattern of greed and entitlement that is inherent within the royal family and the monarchy itself, that each government inherits to manage as best it can.

And that this isn’t despite the monarch; it’s because of the monarch.

It’s not a new argument but he researches and writes well - he’s a trained historian - and engagingly.

And what enablers both QE2 and KC turned out to be in their own ways.

Yes. I certainly knew about some of it, but seeing it all together in one place is gobsmacking

Not caring about the little people yes, and basically stealing off of the charities she was involved in by dressing it up as 'expenses'
A charity for sick children £58,500 on her 'expenses' but only £40,000 going to the charity

I wonder what Charles is thinking this morning because his mother has really handed him a poisoned chalice.

The same thing happened to the now Princess of Wales when the Sussex Squad were on the rampage here (and other places) and had her in their line of sight.

And I’m quite sure you know who and what the Sussex Squad are. Did you protest then?

Oh and the POW really didn’t say anything - unlike Meghan who even had her say numerous times on TV.

It has been said Queen Elizabeth, Charles, and Anne, are notoriously frugal.

I wouldn’t be thinking or saying anything - I’d be drinking what was in the chalice whilst making my way to the Tower of London to throw myself off.

Yes. Let's not forget QE2's Tupperware of cornflakes! That was the most clever PR drop ever!

I don't believe anything like that. it's what they want you to think.

Of course none of those three are on a level remotely anything like Sarah but they all live in splendid luxury of one sort or another with staff at their beck and call

myrtleWilson · 05/08/2025 07:39

Is anyone else intrigued/bemused by the extensive references to phone lines?! Is it seen as a signifier of wealth?

ETA : extensive in comparison to not ever noticing phone lines in other articles!

I agree. If this is what he has managed to find, can you imagine what is sealed? I would imagine industrial levels of enabling by the Palace and the government. I don't know anything about how other Constitutional Monarchies work but surely Denmark for example don't have this protection racket around their own Monarchies? Parliament and the courts are meant to represent us and protect us from untrammeled avarice of the powerful yet they have colluded in this and who knows what else to keep it quiet. It's a far more damning indictment on our politics that a democratically elected Parliament will go to such lengths to protect members of the RF who aren't even heads of state and refuse to even discuss them than it is that a family with unlimited wealth, little responsibility and surrounded by sycophants and yes men will try and get away with as much as they can.
I disagree with @CurlewKate ( not on much) but Sarah was creaming money from charities and spending money like water because she knew the Head of State was bailing her out time and again. She spent a lot of time with her in her later years too. I suspect it won't be Republicans ( I'm not really one- id like a scaled down monarchy properly scrutinised) but the Monarchy, their lackeys and enablers who will bring down the Monarchy by defending and covering up for the indefensible. The Royals will get away with what they are allowed to. For their own benefit they need to not be protected as much as they are and be held to proper account.

It struck me as well.

Is it a signifier of wealth? I don’t think so because she was obviously skint, but I do suspect she had them installed so she would never miss a call from the next fool she planned to try and have bankroll her.

Well no because usually I avoid the RF and especially the Meghan threads like the plague. I've got embroiled in this one because this story is really enraging and goes to the heart of our political system. Harry and Meghan are hugely entertaining idiots ( but also Harry is a product of the RF) but he has been frozen out. Anything he does is now known to be nothing to do with the Royals.

jumpingthehighjump · 05/08/2025 06:56

The avarice, greed and extravagance of Sarah is quite disgusting and knows no bounds.

I just do not understand why the Queen kept bailing her out to the tune of six figures each time. Repeatedly. QE2 enabled these two monsters

Sarah creaming money off of her charities is beyond appalling. She kept most of the donated money!

Meanwhile, she continued to live beyond her means, employing a cook, driver, maid, butler, dresser, nanny, three secretaries, a personal assistant, lady-in-waiting, two gardeners, flower arranger and dog walker.

And the fact she used small businesses like she did. 200 debtors and reading about them is just shocking. Artists, drivers, butchers, hairdressers, personal trainers. She never cared about those she considered beneath her.

I never want to see Andrew or Sarah's stupid faces again.

You can see the Queen’s bailing out as simply wanting to pay the creditors, which is admirable. She probably thought that would be a lesson to SF.

Some chance.

Great post

The problem is..the royal family cannot be questioned in parliament. Erskine May handbook for parliamentary procedure stipulates this. See below
No question can be put which brings the name of the Sovereign or the influence of the Crown directly before Parliament, or which casts reflections upon the Sovereign or the royal family.
Time after time MPs and even ministers try and table questions but the questions are thrown out.

This means they are all virtually untouchable. I think of it like an iceberg. What we know is above water. What we don't, is below water. And it would change their role forever
I am not strongly for a Republic. I want transparency, openness and questions allowed to be debated in parliament about the monarchy

While that was obviously a fun read, am I being very boring if I say I am much more interested in the national security stuff, and the exploitation of women and girls? Andrew and Epstein, rather than Fergie and Tiger Woods.I mean, if I want to read about adult Enid Blyton characters, there are loads of 3 inch thick glossy covered novels available. May I recommend Judith Krantz or Shirley Conran?

He wants to sell millions of copies! The serious stuff might not do that.

exasperatedflatmate · 05/08/2025 07:55

Won't be reading the book but I'm curious as to whether it reveals anything about Andrew's behaviour while in the Navy. He was stationed at a Royal Naval Air Station in the town where I lived as a teen, and I often wonder whether there are little Andrew lookalikes around the place who would be about 14 years younger than me.

It would be in the days before mobiles became ubiquitous, probably? I’m sure she’s one of those people who are never off their phone, talking utter rubbish.

Anything he does is now known to be nothing to do with the Royals.

Not really, a bit like Andrew he uses his Prince title to get paying gigs, also has wealthy dodgy benefactors (Tyler Perry, Oprah). We are hearing he and Meghan are creaming off from his charities, particularly Invictus, government handing over 10s of millions to put on Invictus in UK. Dodgy tax filings for their Archewell foundation.
