I've never started a thread here before, but I thought some people might be interested in this take on the story by a PR podcast I listened to yesterday (started listening to this podcast as I know very little about PR!).

It would be good to know if any of the resident PR people agree.

I don't why there has to be all this hoo ha or even an in-person meeting . I know zoom calls can be recorded and leaked but the meeting was leaked although the actual content isn't known for sure. It's all so overly dramatic. I think, if H is trying to repair his reputation, he's going about it in the wrong way (again). I wonder what his upcoming business venture is going to be.

I imagine the Sussexes hoped that when the story leaked with accompanying pap shots, there would be lots of positive noise in the press and social media about a possible return, that would put pressure on Charles to agree to whatever whacko deal they were suggesting. Unfortunately it seems to have gone the other way. (Harry does seem a bit out of touch with how he is seen by the public - remember he argued he should get extra security for the sake of public morale - because the whole country would be so devastated if anything happened to him 🤪🤪)

Never seen that before but wow it certainly seems Harry has a great deal of similarities with his Mum.

That’s fascinating! It’s so interesting to analyse how this kind of thing snowballs and takes on its own momentum. If you’re interested in history I think it can tell us something about how all kinds of historical events started: wars, revolutions, riots, maybe the storming of the Bastille and The Terror. The strange phenomenon of mass-hysteria is definitely a thing!

I remember being gobsmacked by a woman caller on the radio saying she didn't know how to break the news to her young children.

I understand that there was a delay between the pap shot and publication - maybe there were some post meeting follow up that didnt go the Sussex's way and they had kept their powder dry until then?

Yes, or they timed it to try and spoil positive coverage for the PoW at Wimbledon.

Ridiculous. That's how silly it got.

At least Meghan has the ability to promote herself, once the last court case is over Harry is left with public speaking (not his best skill) and Charity work. At present Harry seems to need the charities as much as they need him. I'd argue if Meghan had produced Polo it would have got a higher loyalty rating. I can't see people buying 3 bottles of un reviewed wine simply because Harry launched it. For all Harry wanting a more normal life I can't see him as Meghans husband and the Prince and Princess father. At some point he is going to have to make a push for William. The timing of the leaking of the story was maybe Wimbledon but it could also be to coincide with Angola, what better way to flood newspapers but with multiple angles.

NormaMajors1992coat · 19/07/2025 10:29

I think with this story about the meeting they were hoping for:

. winning media coverage from Kate at Wimbledon
. surge in public interest in their return
. pressure on Charles to agree half-in half-out type deal

But what they got was:

. Kate gets usual very positive Wimbledon coverage
. negative reaction to the suggestion they might return
. negative reaction to leaking the story
. negative reaction to timing it to coincide with Wimbledon coverage

Obviously all that looks terrible so deny, deny, deny - frustrated that the story somehow got out, very happy in California, no plans to return etc etc etc. Regroup, get a new head of comms, maybe try again in January to take attention from the PoW’s birthday. If the money will last that long of course.

I remember being gobsmacked by a woman caller on the radio saying she didn't know how to break the news to her young children.

On the other side, a couple days after I was speaking to someone whose ds had been stopped by a reporter (BBC I think) and asked how they felt about her death. He said something brief like "that's sad."
She said she was just glad he didn't say "Not bothered," .... he came home and asked her why he should be sad.

A week later he went with friends to lay flowers and proclaimed himself devasted.

It’s also possibly to deflect from the stories about payments to witnesses and reneging on repaying Tyler Perry.

And I remember there was an employment tribunal after a woman was dismissed because she had cried all day, every day at her job for something like 6 months after Diana’s death. And people constructed shrines in their homes!

It’s a fascinating insight into some people’s need for an idol to worship.

Indeed !
it seems his cosplaying of his mother has extended to him believing that he is as beloved as his mother was! 🙄

I've said it before, but what a monumental mess they've made of everything . Years ago, due to a very volatile relationship, I got myself into a financial pickle, so I get that life can be tricky at times. These 2 have a very privileged life, money, advisors, book deals , Netflix deals etc so why can't they make it work?
I just think that they aren't good for each other, neither one of them seems able to reflect on past decisions and then make better ones .

I imagine that this whole debacle will be used or is used to train people in PR management. In other words, look at how it can all go wrong. You could write books on it just using them as an example.

Already stated down thread.

I think it could just have easily been leaked by BP or both parties to signal that talks are ongoing to buy time, take pressure off, and not cause a big fuss.

Who holds confidential business meetings on a balcony fhs? Any member of the BP team would be suspicious of that so I doubt they were persuaded against their better judgement to sit outside.

It’s got to the point on these threads that no one is permitted to express a genuinely different opinion without their motivations being questioned! It’s incredibly tedious!

That is quite fascinating and from memory absolutely typical of the press at the time. I'm always quite aghast at the revised St. Diana narrative that has gained traction since.

Reading that, Harold is indeed his mother's son...

I can confirm that during that final summer the St Diana myth wasn't in evidence at all. Stories were everywhere about her batshit behaviour towards married men, Julia Carling had done a few stories about her break-up with Will because of Diana, Diana's profligate spending was being criticised and then she zipped off with some bloke she hardly knew on a summer holiday for staged pap shots of snogs.

On the Sunday morning when the news broke, I got up as usual and went to the paper shop for the Observer. The front pages were a mix of reporting a serious accident and injured, with the later editions having the news of her death and doing the hagiography stuff. But in the inside pages of the Obs there were still comment and opinion articles slagging her off, which must have been written much earlier in the week. It was a really fascinating insight into how things change in an instant.
