I wonder who he'd try and throw under the bus this time ... family or friends?

Oh, whoever. I don't think he cares.

Ohpleeeease · 07/07/2025 21:12

It’s fair to say that at the time she met Harry Meghan Markle was in a successful phase in her life and had earned decent sums of money over a relatively short period. I don’t think that’s in dispute.

The nature of the entertainment industry though is that success can be short lived. She did well to get a role in Suits and keep it for seven seasons but it took her till her thirties and there was nothing else on the horizon. So however many millions she had managed to bank was going to have to last her for a while.

Also I think people are misremembering how popular Suits was at the time. In the UK it was shown in a daytime slot on a subsidiary channel. It was relatively unknown until MM hooked up with Harry and then suddenly interest was ignited. Its subsequent success on Netflix is entirely down to people’s curiosity about her.

I’m very pleased for the other cast members as there were better performers than MM who have had their profile unexpectedly but deservedly raised.

However, it hasn’t exactly launched careers.

Dh tried to persuade me to watch it.

I couldn't get past the ridiculous premise in the first episode and that's despite lapping up a similarly ridiculous premise in 'The Americans' which was a totally awesome series.

CathyorClaire · 07/07/2025 20:53

I would say 'Spare' has been easily the biggest earner for them over the past few years, but that's not something that can really be repeated.

Agree this was probably the most lucrative (and string free) of the three big deals they made but the original deal was reputedly for four books, three of which haven't materialised.

I think Harold cleaned up (did that promised lump sum ever show up in the Sentebale accounts?) but the publishers allegedly took a hit.

Any sequel would be published by a smaller house, subject to far more clauses and line Harold's pockets much more 'Sparingly' IMO.

Is The Bench included in the 4?
Harry is desperate to reconcile with the RF and he must know that Spare 2 would kill off any chance of that .,

CathyorClaire · 07/07/2025 21:30

Rachel's contribution was originally rumoured to be a wellness manual.

I don't think 'The Bench' ever figured.

Mylovelygreendress · 07/07/2025 21:32

So what happens if the other books don’t materialise?

I don't think he'll have worked that out. After Spare he was moaning about his treatment at the Coronation, which I find extraordinary. Did he not realise the impact?

wordler · 07/07/2025 21:37

If you put her in the context of the hundreds of thousands of beautiful, moderately talented actress wannabes in the movie and tv world she had done very well before she met Harry. You’ve got to admire the hustle and sheer tenacity it takes to make it at all in that world.

What she wasn’t before she met Harry was globally or even really nationally famous. She wasn’t at the level to get covers of the high end fashion magazines, she wasn’t going to get invited to chat to Oprah, or to holiday with Elton John etc.

She was like the actress who played Donna in Suits or the actress who played Hayley’s sister in One Tree Hill - you’d say something like “oh that’s the actress from Suits” if you saw them in something else.

I think she’d have been able to get character parts in other shows and then some recurring parts in some - like a new medical drama etc. I think if she’d married someone in that world or someone already based in LA she’d have been able to lot happier in the long run.

I discovered Suits tucked away in the small
print of the Radio Times. It was entertaining in a silly way, the plot lines were incidental, the actors were fighting for attention with the clothes they stood up in. Easy watching though and MM did ok in it.

I’m listening to a Suits podcast (Sidebar) and apparently she was the stand out choice over many other possibles.

Yes I think Suits was shown on the Dave channel when it was newly released.

Meghan was not even a major character - I did watch a few back in the day when I was recovering from surgery and the main characters were the fake lawyer, his boss, the head of the law firm, the slimy guy and the sassy secretary.

The main claim to fame of Meghan's character was the shagging scene with the fake lawyer against the filing cabinet.

She had some guest spots - I remember her episode from the series Castle about the person murdering fairytale princesses - she played the only survivor, Sleeping beauty .... who turned out to be the psychopath killer.

She used the same acting "I'm a victim" expressions - especially the anxious looking up at the interviewer with tears in her eyes - in the "Nobody asked me if I'm OK" interview as she did in the Castle episode while proclaiming her innocence of the murders.

EmpressSisi · 07/07/2025 22:30

I remember Suits being advertised on Dave, but I don’t specifically recall Meghan Markle being the focus — the promos seemed to highlight the red-haired woman when it came to the female characters.

My sister watched the first few seasons. She was one of the only people I knew who actually recognised Meghan’s name when the news broke that Harry was dating her. But even then, she said Meghan wasn’t one of the standout female leads, let alone a central character.

Meghan was doing well for a 30 odd year old actress finally landing her first major role in a recurring TV drama. She was a moderately successful, minor television actress. Suits was her only big hit, and from what’s widely known, she was anxious about her career prospects once the show ended. That’s apparently why she came to the UK, trying to get on Made in Chelsea and hoping to pursuer something with Ashley Cole.

She was successful enough to live comfortably outside of LA, but not enough to be a household name or live the Hollywood dream many aspiring actresses chase.

Thank you @jeffgoldblum! I would like to have made more money because money obviously brings choices but I am proud of the differences I have made to children’s lives. I was joking about the gift cards. The homemade pictures and cards from children are priceless 🥰.

“A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove... but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child.”

I am putting this here for all of us who work with children as a reminder that what we do , whilst not well paid, and often, not respected, is important.

Like the last words of Mr Chips.

‘I thought I heard you saying it was a pity... pity I never had any children. But you're wrong. I have. Thousands of them. Thousands of them... and all boys.’

They must be really scraping the barrel if they're doing a programme on her finances 🫢 What next, her ... I can't even think of anything more pathetic. Who would even make this drivel, let alone watch it

Her previous husband was in that world. She expected him to get her parts and when he didn’t she lost interest in him.

He went nuclear with Spare. I don't know what else there is for him to say, really.

I'd love for Spare to get the scrutiny The Salt Path is currently getting. Penguin don't seem to have great editorial standards if these two "my truths" are examples of their standard output.

That would be most satisfying!

Meghan's character in Suits averaged something like 90 seconds of screen time per episode over 7 seasons. And wasn't important enough to survive the Mike character actor's departure, hence the season 7 write out. .

Yes, I thought when she did her rehearsed speech on that Oprah debacle about how ‘I gave up my career for him …’, when she was actually unemployed and already in the UK opportunity-hunting, and still throwing money at PR agents, lawyers, the TIG-runner and her agent, was a bit disingenuous.

It’s channel 5. Saturday night. They have rolling royal programmes. If I’m home alone I may flick through. Recent one on the yorks finances was interesting. So not just picking on Meghan.

She tried out for a cookery show, but wasn't good enough.
