Best advice for Harry going forward?

I have all the same initial reactions as many others on MN regarding Harry i.e. whiner, grifter, stupid, entitled etc and it's easy to dole out the criticism.

However while I wouldn't say I have sympathy for him, as so much of his situation is of his own making, I actually do have some underlying feelings of concern for him and his future (and children).

He reminds me an awful lot of a relative of mine who is neurodiverse with a mild learning disability and a tendency to be self-absorbed with an overdeveloped victim complex - always lashing out, blaming others, seeing conspiracy where there is none etc.

Harry is clearly a damaged man, with childhood trauma and issues which continue to plague his mental health.
As with my relative, he has grown up with a support network which has probably quietly managed and enabled his passage through life, but when big outbursts happen (as have happened in our family too) everyone backs off and 'grey rocks' him until he has calmed down. Some people just give up, too exhausted by the constant drama of it all.

It's interesting @jeffgoldblum, a good overview of the security saga . Sounds like by the time of the Sandringham summit, Harry knew he would not have publicly funded security when they decided to go to North America - note - not a decision made when they decided to leave the RF, but one made when they went to North America because it was not feasible to protect them there. So all Harry's subsequent complaints are manipulation and massaging the truth.

Indeed!
and Charles paid for his security for a year so they could get on their feet! … what an uncaring father!

at this point I’m no longer surprised he lied, I’m just flabbergasted that he thinks the truth won’t come out and make him look more of an ass than usual! 🙄

As Lili was born only weeks after Prince Philip died, why not use a female form of his name? Phillipa, even Phyllida. If that didn't suit, how about Alice, for his (amazing) mother? Alternatives that would have real meaning and not just appropriate the poor late Queen's family nickname to merch with.

That’s a nice idea but I would be shocked if H knew anything about his ggm!

JSMill · 14/05/2025 15:36

It interesting that they gave Archie a very unroyal and untraditional name. I think they were just trying to look different and put two fingers up to royal tradition, which shows to me how difficult to deal with. Then when Lillibet was born and they were out of the family, they had to pick a name that reminded everyone of the child’s royal connections.

RandyRedHumpback · 14/05/2025 15:48

Wasn't "Archie" reputedly Prince George's security code name?

With regard to the Lillibet name, I can believe that Harry is so thick that he thought it would be a nice gesture and the queen would be happy. But Meghan? Not a chance. I think she saw the marketing potential in a twee, catchy name (they were already registering "Lillibet" domain names long before she was born); and it was a power move - the ultimate fuck you dressed up as a compliment.

Definitely! If so, the crassness and callousness towards her husband's grandmother, a frail old lady in declining health and also one of the world's most respected women, was off the scale.

TheMeasure · 14/05/2025 16:51

Ffs, @MayaKovskaya I am most certainly NOT a Sussex (squad) supporter and please stop with the “blaming the media” nonsense. I did no such thing.
I agree with everyone as to how crass and arrogant (and frankly cruel) it was to pick that name but to me, the best thing the media could do to thwart whatever their aim was in barging ahead with the plan, would be to flatly ignore it and refer to her as Lili.
In fact, I wish they’d go one step further and stop reporting on them altogether. Starve them of the oxygen of publicity.
—They should do the same with the likes of Katie Price while they’re at it.—

M assumes the “love in’ emails will assume complete devotion plus. The odds are good Lilli might emerge as Princess Anne Mk 2 or even a Saffy character who doesn’t share Mum’s enthusiasm for ‘elevating the ordinary’ ;)

I would love it if Lilibet turned out like Saffy. 😍😍😍

BruFord · 14/05/2025 16:59

@BemusedAmerican It was be hysterical if the children became Saffy-esque and hugely judgemental of their parents’ life choices. 🤣

BemusedAmerican · 14/05/2025 17:12

And Archie, like the son in AbFab, goes off on long trips to unreachable locations. "Archie is following the reindeer migration in Lapland". He has no cell coverage, no Internet, etc.

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised as the reason we find Saffy so funny is this is often how things play out in real life ;) Our children are our greatest teachers. Sheridan in Keeping up Appearances not as Hyacinth imagined in an exec home in burbs with wife in twinset & pearls & 2.2 kids ;)

BruFord · 14/05/2025 17:25

So true @User14March. Our children def. teach us and don’t always agree with our life choices!

Possibly especially true if pushed to inch of life to achieve a unsuited stereotype, we may be looking at ‘Estranged’ similar to Spare. Hope it all works for kids though. Will be interesting to see what Meghan encourages on educational & sports front.

You're probably right @JSMill (I know William does and has visited her tomb)

It would have been a perfect opportunity to honour a brave and inspirational woman and Philip at the same time. Very much agree with you about the gulf in naming choices between Archie Harrison and Lilibet Diana (the Diana being of course understandable.

Oh, I remember when the Robert Hardman's book first came out last year, in which he recounts QEII's reaction and upset. One American poster was adamant that Lillibet was a very common name!

That was hilarious! She found one other person. Who was named after the late Queen....

One thing I always wonder about the name Lilibet is how to pronounce it, what’s the vowel sound at the end - is it Lili-bet like silly pet, or is it Lili-bt, more like halibut?

No idea re Harry. I've tried to find out if there's a source for this. Seems to be based on George telling a stranger in the park that's his name and a rumour coming out of it that this was to do with security. It's probably bollocks.

Don't know, it was her private pet name, I never heard it said.

I would assume as it was her mispronouncing “ Elizabeth “
it would sound similar ?

Yes, it was - that's actually a cute nick name.

MayaKovskaya · 14/05/2025 20:30

It always reminds me of baby name threads where the poster wants a cutesy name for a baby girl, not acknowledging that one day she'll be an adult.
