Prince William not in black at Pope's funeral

I think William made a big mistake in not wearing a black suit to the Pope's funeral.
I think it was a sign of disrespect, particularly as he's going to head of the Church of England.

I know the invite said dark suits for men, but everyone else - except Trump of course! - knew that black was expected, and it's not as if he doesn't have a black suit.

I’m amazed he wasn’t in black- I wonder what the thinking behind the decision was?

Who - William? He was in dark navy. The dress code from the Vatican was dark suits for the men - didn't specify black.
As has been said, William looked smart and appropriate.

Reetpetitenot · 27/04/2025 15:41

Why are you amazed? As has been repeatedly pointed out on the Fred, he axactly adhered to the required dress code as requested by the Vatican. Your amazement is baffling not really, it's obviously just a ruse to indulge in a bit of rf/William bashing 😁

Of course he did. But I just assumed he would default to black.Because optics. Not a big deal, obviously!

No, of course not. I think dark navy seems to be more common at funerals now.

And with hindsight, it would have been good to trump Trump, so to speak…

What optics? The imaginary ones that don’t exist because he actually in fact adhered to the dress code? Those “optics”?

He did. Trump‘a suit was not dark in colour as specified in the dress code. William’s was. Trump did not wear the specified black tie. William did. But why let actual facts get in your way?

@smilesyOh, don’t be silly. Do you really think Trump is not thinking-and will say if challenged- “Well, I did exactly what the future King of England did”? But as I said-hindsight is a wonderful thing.
I bet he will also dine out on having a front row seat when William didn’t-carefully not explaining why.

I honestly kind of think Trump might have more pressing conversations to have.

What do you mean by optics? He surely couldn’t foresee or be expected to care that some people are either misunderstanding the dress code or just fancy having a go when he hasn’t actually done anything wrong. There is no requirement or expectation that men wear black suits to funerals in general. And even if there were, that expectation would be secondary to the requested dress code, which was dark suits, black tie.

Did he wear a dark suit? ✅
Did he wear a black tie? ✅
Are the royal team extremely experienced in such matters and unlikely to make a faux pas? ✅
Do they know more about it than you? ✅
So are you likely to be wrong? ✅

Honestly, there are so many sensible reasons to criticise the RF, picking on this kind of thing and the not-going-to-church-at-Easter,-oh-hang-on,-I totally-meant-going-to-the-wrong-church-at-Easter just makes people look weird and/or thick.

Not this’King of England’ rubbish again. Piers Morgan makes this mistake constantly. Is it deliberate?

mathanxiety · 27/04/2025 13:56

No, it's because in this specific instance he should have worn a black suit. Keir Starmer and David Lammy interpreted the brief correctly, as did everyone else, with the notable and disgraceful exception of trump. Even representatives of middle eastern states, who are not Christian, wore black robes.

It's laughably parochial to suggest anyone here gives two hoots about 'the Sussexes' / the RF's ongoing slow motion train wreck.

If you’re going to do something as crass as implementing an official dress code for a funeral - did they think people might turn up in micro shorts and glittery catsuits otherwise - you’re going to be pretty specific about it. If they specifically meant black, they’d have said black. They managed it for women. Why do you think this is some social maze the heir to the throne somehow failed to navigate?

I can't imagine President Trump will see any reason to compare himself to the Prince of Wales.

Regarding seating: as most media outlets will have detailed the reason for the seating plan, and the potential political interest in the US President sitting between the representatives of Estonia and Finland, I imagine that is much more likely to be in the President's mind than where William was sitting.

No I do not. There is no evidence that Trump ever thinks that hard

eta I don’t think anyone will challenge Trump anyway. Life is really too short. He wasn’t strictly adhering to the dress code but he didn’t look that outrageous. He had a suit on and it wasn’t a bright pink one. Which is exactly why it’s ridiculous to claim that William wasn’t appropriately dressed, when he was adhering exactly to the dress code

CleaningSilverCandlesticks · 27/04/2025 16:28

Given this distinction drawn between ‘dark’ and ‘black’ in the dress code, you could interpret that to mean every who turned up in a black suit was breaking the dress code.

Yes, because strictly speaking in a scientific sense, black is an absence of colour 😆

CurlewKate · 27/04/2025 16:36

For the avoidance of doubt, @smilesy,i did not say that William was not dressed smartly and entirely appropriately.

To be fair to the Vatican (now there's something I never imagined myself saying 😂) given the people attending were from a huge range of cultures with different traditions, it made sense to.provide a dress code - for the sake of attendees who want to be confident about what they wear rather than hoping to have guessed correctly.

No but you talked about the “optics” of him not wearing a black suit. I asked what those “optics” were given that he followed the dress code. Then you said he should have out Trumped Trump so I responded to that 🤷‍♀️

Or what a bunch of chatterboxes on MN thought of the exact shade of his suit.

look joke GIF

I love how so many people assume they know better than the person who actually set the dress code 🤣

I’d say that someone is trying to goad and start a pile on but it looks like they’ve spectacularly failed. We can see right through them.

It's very ignorant if it's not deliberate!
