Prince William not in black at Pope's funeral

I think William made a big mistake in not wearing a black suit to the Pope's funeral.
I think it was a sign of disrespect, particularly as he's going to head of the Church of England.

I know the invite said dark suits for men, but everyone else - except Trump of course! - knew that black was expected, and it's not as if he doesn't have a black suit.

No but you talked about the “optics” of him not wearing a black suit. I asked what those “optics” were given that he followed the dress code. Then you said he should have out Trumped Trump so I responded to that 🤷‍♀️

<shrugs> In a previous life, I sometimes had to advise senior politician on stuff like this. I would always advise the safest possible option-which in this case would have been black. Because it would avoid the slightest possibility of criticism, however unwarranted. Get me drunk and I can tell you some Ken Clark stories!

Please no 😤

Well I would imagine William has some high quality advice of his own and they felt that dark navy was safe, given it completely adhered to the dress code. And several others were wearing it too, along with dark grey if you look at some of the photos posted on this thread 🤷‍♀️

eta no one has batted an eyelid at what William was wearing apart from those who wish to find fault with him for their own nefarious reasons. And before you say you didn’t say that, I’m not talking about you 😆

Neemie · 27/04/2025 17:37

It is very common to wear navy or dark grey to a funeral. There isn’t much call for black suits so most men don’t own one.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 27/04/2025 17:38

Is all the fuss because Meghan might have a black suit all ready to go on her Shopmy site and William has ruined her plans to earn 30p from merching the link to more clothes worn by the family she detests but is happy to make money from? (As she creepily did with the Wales children's clothes?)

Abra1t · 27/04/2025 17:51

If the Vatican meant black suits, not dark, why not specify as they did for women’s outfits?

At my parents’ requiem masses in England the men wore dark navy or dark grey. Black suits aren’t really a thing where we are.

NewAgeNewMe · 27/04/2025 17:57

Greeks wear full on black. Dark navy with black tie acceptable. Vatican said dark suit with black tie. William was appropriately dressed.

Last week was complaint William went to the wrong church at Easter. This week wrong suit. What’s it going to be next week?

I'm really hoping that when William becomes king, he announces that he became a Druid while living on Angelsey, has been fluid in Welsh all along, and will now wear white robes for ceremonial occasions. Then he starts planting lots of forests.

😂😂
Brilliant! However some people on here would moan: "Are those Druid robes the right colour? Is his accent North or South Wales? How come we can't get close to Stone Henge? How come midsummer night isn't a Bank Holiday? Why is he wearing beige socks when we know beige socks are an affront? Why is he so badly advised? etc etc etc"

The wrong expression on his face, probably 🙄

Meant to respond to this this morning, but the thread had moved on. Trump is not a car salesman, that’s Elon Musk. Trump is more of a dodgy estate agent 😆

Lol he is both now, after he that ridiculous scene of him and the red tesla in front of the white house- if that wasn't a sales pitch I don't know what is!

CurlewKate · 27/04/2025 19:36

I see no reason at all why William should go to church unless he has a personal faith.one of the many reasons I am a Republican.

Wouldyouelievriy · 27/04/2025 20:55

Can Anyone please offer an opinion as to why the women were instructed to wear black specifically and not just 'dark' colours

PrinceYakimov · 27/04/2025 21:08

I'm pretty sure the British royal males don't ever wear black day suits except for royal funerals. I can't think of a time I've seen any of them wearing black in the day outside of a royal funeral (that includes Diana's of course).

Yes, I think a black suit, other than a dinner jacket is considered a bit naff?

Yes, they are. And they look very cheap, too, regardless of the quality of the fabric and cut.

CathyorClaire · 27/04/2025 21:22

He looked OK.

Maybe we should just appreciate the Royal Pimpernel showing up at all ☕

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 27/04/2025 21:30

He followed the requested dress code which was dark suit / black tie. Papa Francesco wouldn't have bothered what people wore. He probably didn't really want the massive state-like funeral either.

It's protocol for female dignitaries meeting the pope to wear black (unless they are Catholic queens, in which case they are permitted to wear white - it's called privilège du blanc). So I suppose they extended that to the funeral. The Catholic queens did show up in black though - I guess for a funeral that makes sense.

It's also protocol for female dignitaries to wear a head covering or veil - you can see old pictures of QE, Diana and Camilla all wearing veils or hats to meet different popes. I see that a lot of the female dignitaries didn't do that on Saturday though - I guess probably because most Catholic women don't wear a head covering in church anymore, unless you are exceptionally pious/conservative/elderly.

Why? Does he have a history of not bothering to turn up for prearranged engagements, like his brother? First I've heard of it, beyond the occasion when he was due to speak at a funeral but had just been told his wife had cancer. Do tell.

It's unspeakably naff 😆

IMHO, it seems that some posters seem very upset that W was featured alongside global persons of power including Presidents, Prime Ministers and Royalty. Even more galling for some, W was dressed in accordance with the Vatican's dress code and represented the Crown with dignity.

Given that there was nothing real to criticise, some posters including the OP, "complicated cancer narrative" and "vicious nickname specialist" are faithfully championing false narratives about W.

Just like Sisyphus, they keep trying. And they keep believing that somehow the rock of lies will make it up the hill of truth!

William looked properly respectful and appropriately dressed. As did the other official guests wearing dark blue, navy, dark grey, and white tunics with head scarves etc. The more casually drssed ordinary folk looked respectable too. Pope Francis was a man hopeful for all people and all creatures.
