Prince William not in black at Pope's funeral

I think William made a big mistake in not wearing a black suit to the Pope's funeral.
I think it was a sign of disrespect, particularly as he's going to head of the Church of England.

I know the invite said dark suits for men, but everyone else - except Trump of course! - knew that black was expected, and it's not as if he doesn't have a black suit.

I've thought as long as I need to, thank you.
I don't agree being at war means you don't need to follow dress codes.

Zelensky was in a dark suit. What’s the issue?

upinaballoon · 27/04/2025 14:05

Have the words 'It seems very disrespectful to me' replaced the old MN favourite 'weird'.

What did the advice say? Dark suit? Dark blue? Dark green? I thought I saw one middle eastern VIP in white.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/04/2025 14:06

Bloody cite more respectful than Trump in his Trigger-blue suit, fiddling with his phone.

Is that what it is? Reeks of desperation.

Hard to tell when faced with a new username but experience shows that it’s usually one of three groups when it’s a weird no sense criticism.

-– republicans who think that smearing William and Kate’s reputation at every opportunity will ultimately help the republican cause because they are the most popular royals

– Sussex squad or H&M fans who need to try to bring W&K down for ‘reasons’

– an odd third category of mostly Americans who particularly hate William and Kate led by an odd character called Kaiser on a website Celebitchy - they sometimes seem like the Sussex squad because they’ve sort of started to feed into that camp but their online hate predates Meghan’s appearance. It’s one of those truely swamplike parts of the internet.

Serenster · 27/04/2025 14:09

As did everyone else, with the notable and disgraceful exception of trump…

That’s patently not true. You can see from the pictures (some posted on this thread) that aside from Trump and William several other dignitaries also wore dark blue suits.

If you have to rely on obvious false statements to support your argument, it must can’t be a very good one to start with.

No, it's because in this specific instance he should have worn a black suit. Keir Starmer and David Lammy interpreted the brief correctly, as did everyone else, with the notable and disgraceful exception of trump. Even representatives of middle eastern states, who are not Christian, wore black robes.

It's laughably parochial to suggest anyone here gives two hoots about 'the Sussexes' / the RF's ongoing slow motion train wreck.

HE DID NOT MISINTERPRET THE DRESS CODE. HE WORE A DARK SUIT AND A BLACK TIE AS SPECIFIED.

There was no hidden code that said “dark colour” means black. It means “ dark colour”. His suit conformed to this. His tie was black. Why do you think he needed to second guess “dark colour” as meaning “black”? As many op have said, the one thing that the British RF know how to get right is protocol. The Arab leaders wore black robes because they were asked to wear dark colours. If they had worn dark blue, they might have been mistaken for nuns, perhaps. And they probably thought that dark blue robes would have looked shit. Whereas a dark navy suit looked appropriate

Spot on.

And on that point - here’s a photo of William and those around him. I count 5 people, including William, wearing dark blue, and 16 wearing back.

So in a random crowd shot, a quarter are wearing dark blue. Tell us again about these “notable and disgraceful exceptions”?

I'm de-railing by saying I thought all the scarlet and gold looked good and I thought someone 'on the internet' would be bound to be moaning about the cost of THOSE garments. I was mentally running up a scarlet cotton outfit for summer, with some gold ribbon from the haberdashers in the corner.
Before I'm expunged for de-railment I'd like to say I'm wondering if the local cinema with have a quick re-run of 'Conclave'.

There were plenty of men there not in black but adhering to the dress code, and even more women that ignored the head covering request altogether. Making misleading statements to prove a point makes you sound like Donald Trump - and we all know how much credibility he carries ;)

And some of those not in navy look to me as if they are in very dark grey and not black…

Backbag · 27/04/2025 14:20

I don't think black suits have ever been the convention for funerals. A dark suit and a black tie.

I can see Les Dawson with his arms folded under his plastic bosoms, talking over the garden fence, and saying "I think he made a BIG mistake and he was very dis-respectful."

Black suits tend to look very cheap. Even the King of Spain looked kind of ordinary in his, and he is always very elegant.

The man in the top right is wearing white tie?? Maybe it was the only dark suit he had!

That’s what I think .Navy is more tasteful except for evening west.

NormaMajors1992coat · 27/04/2025 14:39

@mathanxiety Why do you think he should have worn black when the dress code was dark suit and black tie for men, and black for women? How are you interpreting those very clear instructions as men must wear black suits?

Sorry evening wear!

SweetBaklava · 27/04/2025 14:50

I’m no fan of work shy Wills, but he absolutely did nothing wrong here. There were other dignitaries in navy eg Biden and King of Jordan. Trump took the piss as his was a not really ‘dark’ enough and it wouldn’t have killed him to wear a dark tie IMHO…. But honestly I don’t think the pope would have given a toss!

Well Trump is, quite literally, a car salesman

Meant to respond to this this morning, but the thread had moved on. Trump is not a car salesman, that’s Elon Musk. Trump is more of a dodgy estate agent 😆

Sorry, but what a load of cobblers. If the Vatican had wanted male guests to wear black, it would have been stipulated, as it did for women guests.

Honestly, stop digging.

CurlewKate · 27/04/2025 15:34

I’m amazed he wasn’t in black- I wonder what the thinking behind the decision was?
