Princess of Wales has been instrumental in introducing the Alarm Distress Baby Scale (ADBB) to the UK—a tool designed to assess infant wellbeing and enhance parent-infant bonding.
What Is the ADBB?
The ADBB is an observational tool that evaluates how babies interact with their environment by monitoring behaviors such as eye contact, facial expressions, vocalizations, and activity levels. It helps health professionals and families better understand infants' emotional needs, supporting early identification of distress and fostering stronger parent-child relationships.
Following her visit, the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, in collaboration with the Institute of Health Visiting and the University of Oxford, initiated a pilot program in the UK. The initial trial took place in South Warwickshire and Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trusts, where health visitors reported that the ADBB facilitated more meaningful conversations with parents about their babies' emotional wellbeing and helped identify families needing additional support.
Expansion and Funding
Due to the positive outcomes of the pilot, the program has been expanded to eight additional areas across the UK, including regions in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. This second phase is backed by a £210,000 grant from the Centre for Early Childhood and is scheduled to run until March 2026.
