Being classified as a Black woman is very different in the US versus sub-Saharan Africa. This is a bit of a long post but hope it helps.

The US uses the "one drop rule." If you have some black ancestry, you can claim that you are black even if you do not have stereotypically African features. The US has certain racial categorizations such as quadroons (1 of 4 grandparents was African), octoroons (1 of 8 great-grandparents was African)
PBS explains one drop rule

Within African Americans there is the issue of colorism. Lighter skinned slaves, often progeny of the master, more often worked in the houses, had access to basic education to perform tasks and better food. Darker skinned slaves, worked in the fields with no access to literacy or good quality food. Compounding the literacy dividend head start over the generations has resulted in lighter skinned African Americans tending to have more wealth vs their darker skinned cohorts. This created an unfortunate association that lighter skin meant you were somehow "better". So, you have some individuals who are proud of being a lighter shade of Black or "passing" for White and are excited when their progeny have "blue blue blue eyes."

Africans have a far different understanding of race than Americans. In sub-Saharan Africa, you need two Black parents to be classified as Black. In Zimbabwe, where Sophie Chandauka is from, M, due to her mixed heritage would be classified as "Coloured" (0.5% of Zimbabwe’s population) and not “Black”, (98% of Zimbabwe’s population), so from a Zimbabwean point of view, M is not a fellow black woman to SC.

Apartheid was not only present in South Africa but was present in most of colonial Africa, from Kenya to Zimbabwe featuring racially segregated hospitals to be born, racially segregated graveyards to be laid to rest and racial stratification of life in between (schools, elevators, offices, prisons, etc.).

M would be classified as “Coloured” in Eastern & Southern Africa and “Half-caste” in West Africa. Coloured children were whisked from their families as soon as an authority spotted then and were raised by the state. The State then punished the parents with prison time. Trevor Noah in his book "Born a Crime" detailed how his mother's family hid him, and while outside his mother pretended to be his nanny so the South African state would not take him. Born a Crime by Trevor Noah

As you can imagine children raised in government orphanages did not have the best start to life as they were routinely neglected and ignored. To this day, social studies by race in former colonies such as Kenya or Zimbabwe show that the Coloured population is over-represented in crime, alcoholism, drug abuse, etc. Unfortunately, as a consequence, the Black African population looks down on the Coloured population as having no culture and no roots and views any marriage as bringing in problems to the family.

What a brilliantly informative post, thank you

If we are really lucky, Love, Vanessa will do an episode where she elevates the empty spread jar on her column!

I don't know if people in the UK have ever heard of the J. Peterman catalog? My brother used to get the print one. Then J.Peterman showed up on Seinfeld. I think she's channeling J.Peterman:

I don’t know what happened either but he and the others who resigned, perhaps felt that it was in the charity’s best interest? Just another perspective!

If Harry had been bullying people left right and centre why would all of the others capitulate so easily?

Because the others were his chums, recruited to his vanity project, maybe?

A poo knife could be the first product when she launches the As Ever homewares range, engraved with Made in Monte*hitshow.

Edited for typos

I don't think the accusations seem to be about bullying. As far as i can tell it is about people not being willing to speak honestly to their Patron about what is and isn't working. That isn't necessarily out of fear, it could be because they don't want to upset him because they are friends, or they could realise that because of the Diana link he is sensitive about changed.

Does anyone actually write love notes on paper anymore? Does she have a target audience? Or is she having a laugh and trolling the public?

Someone said on a thread about the NF show that the juxtaposition of Meghan's angry energy and the bland, beige, nothingy aesthetic reminded them of a horror movie. I think they're right.

I would expect that type of language from an influencer who has built up a following over years. Our about a personal hand made product. Not mass produced spread for someone who has been selling for five minutes.

JandamiHash · 31/03/2025 17:57

Whatdoweknowsofar · 31/03/2025 16:29

Yes. If I was CEO of a charity, as a fairly anonymous executive, I wouldn’t care where I stood in the line up. I would want the photographer to capture the main most recognisable “players” in the group, to bring in as much publicity for the cause as possible.

Edited

I highly doubt that.

MrsLeonFarrell · 31/03/2025 17:58

Don't most people keep love notes in a box that fits the shape of the paper?

It will probably land well with the Sussex Squad. For anyone else it seems a bit deranged.

CorrectionCentre · 31/03/2025 18:01

Gyles is friendly with the Charles and Camilla and CT usually takes a very pro-palace line, so maybe BP knows something that we don’t about the situation? Or there are similar issues within some of the RF’s charities that they don’t want to draw attention to?

@Whatdoweknowsofar

I thought the interview with Gyles and Camilla what's her name was a waste of air time. GB is a close friend of KC and QC. He made a big song and dance about the optics on the stage at the polo and dismissed all of the logistical problems caused by changes in plans etc. He had 2 choices. One was to big up Harry and the other was to say publicly that the Sussex brand is now "toxic" . I sincerely doubt that's what KC wants for his 2nd born son. So Gyles in his ridiculous jumper, jokes and glosses over any uncomfortable realities (i.e. the accusations of toxicity which are real).. He just waffled on about NF being good publicity for the charity. He didn't even acknowledge how it wasn't free publicity nor how poorly the Polo series was viewed!
I know it was This Morning not News night, but it illustrates how the casual viewer gets subtly fed incomplete and inaccurate information.
I think BP are fully aware that any enquiry will bring out challenging facts, but KC still wants to protect while he can.

JandamiHash · 31/03/2025 17:57

In any case, it wasn't about the photo op in itself, but that SC was expected to contribute to the Sussex PR afterwards.

"As ever is more than a brand, it's a love language"

(According to the website.)

It's all elevated language and extremely basic generic products.

Serenster · 31/03/2025 18:03

I don't think the accusations seem to be about bullying.

Some of them are. SC said in yesterday’s interview that after Harry was annoyed with her for declining to speak up in support of Meghan, board meetings became uncomfortable affairs, with her being subject to frequent verbal attacks (I don’t think she specified who was behind this). She mentioned that external attendees, and internal attendees, like the Head of Strategy would message her during the meetings to express shock at what was being said and ask if SC wanted them to intervene. She also said that the Head of Fundraising asked to be excused from attending future meetings as they were too uncomfortable to attend.

Messages and emails of course can be kept, so SC may have evidence of these messages to her even if the comments that allegedly provoked them were not recorded.

Forget that for a minute.

She has suggested that people keep the jam jar packaging to store love notes in, and to remind them of the moment she launched her brand.

Speechless.

Omg she really is the gift that keeps on giving. Surely she cannot be serious? This is why I’m here, she is endlessly entertaining.

I would like everyone to note please that this derail was started by
jeffgoldblum

I was simply stating my views and detest these personal exchanges as I think they are boring for others to read.

Why can’t others simply allow those of a differing opinion to comment freely?

Do you have it in for Republicans or something?

And now you are being disingenuous as you clearly suggested I was repeating what another poster had said.

By saying that I am entitled to my opinion you are giving me permission to comment are you not?

And I do not need your permission, so please lay off!

Sure, Jan.
