It was a joke...

Yes I’ve noticed a lot of “ republicans “ seem to be extremely humourless!!
doesn’t exactly endear them to others , perhaps it’s a throwback to Cromwell?
we all learned how well that went I’m sure! 🤣

and on a personal note @Corinthiana, I saw your apology and like wise extend mine , I was snippy because it seemed a rerun of earlier very unpleasant threads .

Oh, no bother at all. 🌻 I understood your point and was vexed I'd been a bit insensitive. I don't mind Charles and don't wish him harm.
I have to say folks are getting riled on here, though!

Not humourless in the slightest! Bloody nonsense. Just get so tired of the President Johnson, President Blair, blah blah arguments. Can’t stand Charles but I have no ability to democratically chose to replace him as head of state. It’s the 21st century - that’s an insane state of affairs.

Indeed the cartwheels some put themselves through to defend an extremely privileged white prince amazes me ! 🤷‍♀️

He'll need a couple of weeks off after that then

That seems to be his (William's) routine and timetable. A day's "work" then a month off with exhaustion.😊

No doubt the court circular will be mentioned to show how busy he is making and taking calls in his PJs on zoom (like the rest of us I suppose, but we don't have a choice!). Oh the joys.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/03/2025 17:48

Dont forget we could have had Andrew as King if anything happened to Charles and he didn’t have kids!

Not sure it's such a "crap argument", @BananaNirvana, when you consider Charles could easily have been killed along with his friend in the 1988 Klosters avalanche

Admittedly he had both William and Harry by then, but what if it had happened before they were born? Hmm

I know! Imagine giving a pass to someone like that. I can't see how he's so well regarded.

We live in a country with a monarchy as do other countries, a hundred odd years ago we tried the republican route , it didn’t last and wasn’t very successful, as always the minute one person has power that they weren’t brought up to bare , the power went to his head , morals were forgotten and personal greed rained, the very same people who disposed the king then wanted him back !

we should try and learn from history, because of this power is split so it’s divided and no one person can rule as despot.

if you think people won’t vote in these types of people how do you explain them being previously voted in?

and although I’m not a royalist and can understand some republican thoughts , the basic fact of the matter is we have a monarchy and more people want to keep it than those who don’t .

pr @Corinthiana, extremely well done pr , we were fed an image that we would find exceptable and sympathetic.
obviously Harry has pulled down the curtain and we can see the reality and it’s not pretty!
others seem blinded by the truth and stick to the narrative they were fed!
some still seem to think he’s a little boy walking behind his mothers coffin and this excuses everything he’s done!

Corinthiana · 28/03/2025 18:05

Yes, it just seems to define him. He's maybe found a way to excuse himself from bad behaviour? I don't know. I wish he could find something useful and positive to do.

MissRoseDurward · 28/03/2025 18:05

What, in 1925? What was George V doing while that was happening?

I think you might mean nearly 400 years ago.

Did we?
Gosh my history must be shocking

"the power went to his head , morals were forgotten and personal greed rained"

isn't it great how all that applies to the current chief parasite too!

Now you know I don’t want to argue with you @Mightymoog, so I’m not going to discuss it with you , I respect your right to your opinion even if I don’t agree with it , the same way I don’t discuss religion or politics with friends.

and obviously I was being general when I said a hundred ODD years ago ,obviously Cromwell wasn’t exactly 100 years ago , so I should have said 400 hundred years ago !
was largely unaware that I needed to put the exact date ! . The point was clear .

Best part is, Andrew arguably isn't even the closest shave we've had with a monarch in recent generations. Thank fuck for Wallis Simpson.

I doubt the UK has the bandwidth for serious constitutional change at present, but what would happen if we got a genuine wrong un is a real concern.

And ? Did you need exact dates to know about Cromwell? Or are you being picky for some reason?
ok he ruled from December 1653 to September 1658 .

it’s extremely difficult to post exact dates , with my autistic ds hanging off me!

It really wasn't. Getting rid of a monarchy that still held some significant actual power during a violent civil war is very different to getting rid of one 100 years ago, well into the constitutional figurehead era. The split of powers you talk about was vastly different in the 1640s than in the 1920s. If you'd just been say 50 years out I'd agree no big deal, but the vast difference between the eras means it's one you have to make clear.

Strangely , I have some sort of mental block when it comes to the civil war .
I get confused over which Charles did what and Cromwell I often think of Thomas first.
You'd think I'd know this by now!

Did you miss this post?
@BeHere as far as I’m aware that was the only time the U.K. successfully removed a monarch and had a republican movement.
are you saying there was another one I missed?
otherwise I’m still confused as to not providing an exact date would be confusing!

No I know what you mean too many kings with the same name , too many dates stuffed into our heads simultaneously at school and college! , I find dates awful now it’s the 2000s , I can barely remember if it’s 24 or 25 , and oddly keep regressing back to 1995! ( my favourite year!)
I was disgusted to discover my favourite film ( which I consider recent!) was 30 years old!! 😭

Sigh,
how was he "thrust" into a role he'd been supposedly preparing for all his life?

Because the second his mother died, he became king, and all the duties that came with it were thrust upon him immediately, as well as all the ceremonial stuff. He didn't get a chance to draw breath, let alone let the grief sink in. Goodness knows if the man even slept. Have you ever lost a parent? You can prepare for their death all you like, but it still hits you. Nobody prepares you for the death of a loved one, even though you know it's coming. Now imagine taking on the biggest job of your life that comes with public facing duties and responsibilities the minute your mother dies, and not having time to grieve. We get it, you hate him. But you don't seem to have an ounce of humanity.
