In my fantasy scenario, his better brain tells him that the millions inherited from gan-gan, granny and grandpa, and mummy, are sufficient to buy a house big enough for all his books, feed his dogs, and lease a land-rover. Meanwhile, his salary covers food and the purchase of a new pair of cord trousers and acashmere pullover every few years.

😂

Harry immediately flew over to see his father after the cancer diagnosis and by all accounts Charles only allowed Harry forty minutes for a meeting.

Well he could have waited to find out when would be best for him to come. And not announced it to the world beforehand.

....where you have to make an appointment to visit your parent...

Don't all children of working parents (and parents of working children, come to that) have to plan their visits around the other person's work commitments? Or should Harry just have been permitted to barge in when his father was holding an investiture or meeting a foreign dignitary or about to set off for an engagement in Wallsall or Wigan or Worksop?

'No, I won't be at home on Wednesday. Thursday after 6pm is fine, though.

Harry had a gig in Las Vegas later that week, handing out a sports award. It would have looked bad for him to have prioritised the gig over visiting his sick dad, so he squeezed a (flying) visit in.

Why on earth would you be offended by a historic expression from the middle ages?!

But once you know the origins of the phrase it makes it hard to use without that knowledge coming to mind (for me anyway)And after so long there are so many other expressions that have since come into use.

The way we use language matters to some of us. It doesn’t to you and that is fair enough.

Is it really substantially different to working for the family business?

I'm not convinced either that the offices brief against each other. Don't most of us make an arrangement to visit our parents rather than just rocking up unannounced? Most of them appear to be in generally happy relationships. There's been breakups like any other family.

If H&M think they are well out of it, why cling on so desperately to the bloody titles?!

I would love to have an office that briefed against my sister.

if you’re reading this Sis I am joking

Do you have similar compunctions about the etymology of words, or just phrases?
Sinister, for example.

The Meaning of language changes over time. I don’t object to the word ‘sinister’ because I am left-handed. And if someone says something is awful I don’t think they are in awe of it. Despite my earlier post, I don’t really think we should ban the word ‘cupboard’ because it references the place from which oppressive lords managed their serfs.

I think the point is that these families are private

Exactly. They won't generally be seen at public events because they have no public role. And no-one needs to know whether they're invited to Sandringham or Balmoral as private guests at family parties.

I might discount anything Harry says, but Prince Seeiso is a different matter. It's his country, he's an educated man who's had roles in government and diplomacy. I imagine he would have very carefully considered before making any public statement.

Wasn't Lynda Chalker Minister for Overseas Development at one point?

Lynda Chalker was indeed Minister of Overseas Development & Africa - appointed by Margaret Thatcher in 1989 to 1997 - in 1992 she lost her seat in the HoC and was given a life peerage to the HoL so kept her ministerial position.

Interestingly she also used her Overseas Development experience to found a Consultancy company in 1998 (after the Cons lost power) called "Africa Matters" which offered paid consultancy services to companies and businesses wanting to do business or expand their business with Africa. She remained on the board until she resigned in 2016.

Even more interesting is that her business consultancy activities with Africa Matters overlaps with her directorship and place on the board at Senetable - appointed in 2013.

Makes me wonder about potential conflicts of interest and whether Senetable bought business consultancy services from Africa Matters?

Pretty sure that the real reason for Harry's "mercy dash" was to meet with his lawyers. Harry came to England on Feb 6th 2024 and briefly visited his father - and his lawyer announced to the High Court on Feb 9th 2024 that Harry had reached a settlement with Mirror group ...

A coincidence? By leaking the story that he was coming to visit his "cancer stricken" father the settlement talks went under the radar and he got lots of sympathy.

My children brief against each other all the time. The audience is their parents, rather than the world’s press! 🤣

Lunde · 28/03/2025 19:16

It is interesting just how turbulent Senetable seems to have been with 39 board members/officers appointed and 33 resignations ....

Also Sophie Chandauka is a long standing board member - appointed as a director in January 2009 - so has been with Senetable for 16 years

Thanks for that nugget. He certainly killed two birds with one stone there ( if you'll pardon my use of a phrase fraught with violent imagery) and strengthens the argument that he was here for reasons other than real concern for his dad.

That’s funny. It’s also a reminder of why so many people found H’s complaints about W in Spare so funny and ridiculous. Anyone who has a sibling will remember bickering over the most petty things. The dog bowl story also reminded me of a dent in my husband’s bedroom door in his parents house caused by him shoving his brother into it when they were fighting in their early twenties. They have a very close relationship now.

It sounds like the charity was poorly managed - neglected after H left the RF and the grey suits backed off, and the funds are drying up without the regular sprinkling of Royal stardust.

H seems to have lost interest - didn't visit for six years - and all the trustees stopped trying. They seem to be positioning Dr C as a the baddie so they can chuck in the towel (if you'll pardon the use of a phrase rooted in historical oppressive pugilistic practices) while saving face, when she was actually part of the same team as them for a long time.

Wasn't he also offered palace accommodation, but he turned it down? Instead he chose to stay in a hotel - and I think he also gave an ITV interview on the same visit, if I am recalling it all correctly.

Back to the rumour about Meghan filming at William and Kate's place. I think as a 2016 influencer she knew from day 1 she was onto a gold mine . They took selfies on their first date, in Botswana, she even snapped him getting ready to propose. If things had fizzled out at any point she had amazing photos to sell. I believe she took photos wherever she could as a kind of insurance.

BasiliskStare · 28/03/2025 20:14

Ho yes! She "let that slip" oh so casually in an interview, mentioning that she'd just happened across them discarded in a drawer when they were clearing out Frogmore Cottage.
Yeah right. As if she'd have left that potential goldmine in a fucking drawer! Locked away in a safe, more like.

It is different with words I think because the way you construct a sentence renders the etymology almost meaningless as the word takes its meaning in relationship to other words. A metaphorical phrase is more powerful and conjures vivid images. For example I wouldn’t now be able to say the phrase about swinging a cat in a small room without now seeing a whip where before I never really thought about it (I didn’t even imagine pussy cats being swung until someone said.

that could change if you tell me the etymology of the word sinister (please don’t tell me the etymology of the word sinister. Ignorance is bliss as they say…I wonder where that phrase comes from?
