Meghan’s show IS something new and different.

So we have it wrong. THIS IS an entirely new format for a cookery/lifestyle show. Because it isn’t a cookery/lifestyle show. This is Netflix first foray into the world of informercials and they are doing it in NF style; meaning a big budget and a slight twist.

So With Love, Meghan is a 5hr advert for As ever and Meghan Sussex. But what makes it different; is it has been disguised as a lifestyle show and there’s no direct sales. It’s the soft sell…..very beige and subtle.

So every recipe and story Meghan shares, is designed around an As ever product. Even conversations with friends are designed to either sell Meghan or a product.

For example. In Ep 8, she makes shortbread with edible flowers. A packet mix of shortbread with edible flowers is now on the As ever website. Now on the show, we don’t see her open the box. But what we do see, is her giving a very quick run through of a basic dough recipe and then tell the viewer they can just use shop bought. The majority of the time isn’t spent in the baking, it’s spent on the decorating with edible flowers.
This is by design. All the baked goods she’s shows you on the programme, she says things like ‘I don’t enjoy baking’, ‘I’ve never made doughnuts before’, ‘ I only learned last week to make focaccia’ ‘I don’t like measuring’
So while viewers who are expecting to watch a cookery show, are flummoxed by someone with such little baking skills teaching us- it’s because it’s an advert and she’s selling the idea that the baking part isn’t important. So when the As ever baked goods mixes appear after the advert goes out, people will want to buy. Because they know that even Meghan doesn’t like baking. That it’s ok to skip that part, and focus on the decorating and gifting part.

This is soft selling infomercials. It’s a Netflix/QVC hybrid. She is directly selling you the idea and lifestyle, but softly selling you the products. You find out what these products are, after the show.

More examples-
Ep 1 where she makes an Epsom salt bath mix (As ever TM pending). The honey and ginger tea she shares with her friend Daniel is on the As ever website. Teapots are also intended to be sold. The raspberry jam that she uses in the cake she bakes (which again, is a very basic mix and she runs through quickly- because we know she wants to sell packets of the stuff) is now available in the website. As is the honey she used for the cake syrup.

So Ep 2, where we see Meghan make kids party bags. Included are kids gardening tools (which is under the As ever TM application) a honey stick (TM application ) and plant pots (TM application)

Everything is for sale. When in Ep. 7 Meghan puts shop bought croissants in a basket and decants jam into little ramekins, a quick look at the TM application confirms that these are all items she intends to sell under As ever.

How does the soft sell look?

Take for example the jam on the show. The label isn’t on the jar, so it’s not directly selling the brand, As ever. But it’s the same jar shape and we know that it’s raspberry because the cake is decorated with fresh raspberries on top, indicating the jam used. Or the crepe are served with the jam and fresh raspberry’s. It’s all very subtle. The raspeberry jam product then drops straight after the show.

The stories she shares are designed to sell too. For example; her memory of her gran making apple butter- she has fruit butters under her TM application.

Even conversations with friends are designed to sell not only Meghan (how wonderful she is) but they are designed to introduce products in the As ever line. So in Ep 5 we see Meghan’s friends Kelly and Abby discuss Meghans love of spicy condiments - these are under the As ever TM application. We also see Abby discuss Meghans love of flowers and how she helped her in her floral business. From the TM application, you can see it is As Ever’s intention to sell fresh flowers and plants. It’s also why we are given floral demonstrations with ‘supermarket’ flowers.

Conversations with her friend Vicky too in Ep 7, about how Meghan loves a polished skin look, while making face masks- again, we see As ever intends to sell non medicated skin products from the TM application.

The show is a practical demonstration of how to use her products, but the products are released after the advert. When you cross ref the TM application items with what was seen on screen, you see clearly that everything is designed for a sale. Crockery, candles, baskets, wrapping paper, jam etc.

Another tell that this is an infomercial hybrid, is the fact that they have said more As ever items will be released seasonally. Why? What’s seasonal about honey and ginger tea and crepe mix that it’s to come out in spring? These are store cupboard items, not seasonal products.
What they actually mean is, when a new advert comes out, new products will be introduced and added to the collection.

This is why all the press reviews for the show mean nothing. NF won’t care that’s it’s ridiculed. We have all just watched the advert they wanted us to watch. What they want is for it to translate into sales for As ever. It really doesn’t matter how much critical acclaim the show gets, as it’s just a vehicle for the products.
Additionally, we know from the TM application that As ever wants to enter the podcast world. So her new podcast will be in furtherance to the brand and selling the products. But again, it will be a soft sell, not direct.

So it IS a completely new style of cooking show. It goes beyond product placement but isn’t direct selling. I think meghan and NF think they have been very clever. At some point everyone will figure out these are just adverts and work out that every recipe, conversation and story, is linked to an item that you can buy on the As ever website straight after the show.

She’s not trying to be Martha Stewart, she wants to be the new Kathy Ireland ……Meghan Sussex. That’s why there’s been a name rebrand. It’s trying to copy the Kathys mega brand (huge in the US, unknown here) but direct selling her own products….but in a 2025 Netflix kinda way.

So the purpose of the informercial was to

1- introduce the name Meghan Sussex. That’s why they’ve included the car crash ticking off Mindy got- because at least it got her new brand name in. It’s the new Kathy Ireland.

2- To sell the new Meghan Sussex image. So throughout each episode, her friends fawn over her and tell her how amazing she is at everything- cooking, hosting, flower arrange etc.

3- To soft sell the lifestyle wirh generic, no label products first, then find out what the As ever products are after. I’m sure this is a way to get around not having to list the show as an advertisement. That’s also why the name of the show and her product line are different. So it’s not seen as traditional advertisement.

With her appearance on Drew Barrymore, she’s confirming the new brand name, confirming that she’s this super nice, working mom and that she has products to sell you.

Absolutely shameless and so underhand in my opinion……but it might work.

@MrsFinkelstein That's the large one. 26cm diameter as I recall. It's not huge especially if you look at the flirty out leaf decoration bits which means your maximum useable diameter is not 26 cm. But a useful size . I see from the website 100+ people have been looking at this recently 😂 I am sure your husband has many admirable qualities but I cannot include him in the cohort of Persons of Taste and Refinement I mentioned to Atlusvue. My husband thought it was "very nice" said in a if you like it get it sort of way. What did your husband not like abut the price ? Mine I think thought thank God she only wants to lash out that much on some frippery. This one (price) he may have had more of an opinion. https://www.libertylondon.com/uk/Large-Cabbage-Bowl-R057125006.html?utm_term=57125006&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=&utm_term=&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD4IbFFrhLOXWV9kO69CRNnFujIWY&gclid=Cj0KCQjw-e6-BhDmARIsAOxxlxUz_c9t6FxHryNcQqn1nJ4mP4XkgUr9B4C4qzgulPeTSuJy8LcOi10aAvA5EALw_wcB

Actually I do like that Liberty dish but not quite so easy to slip under the radar in the Ocado order

@jeffgoldblum That sounds good to me. I have a 12 setting dinner service with all the bits and pieces you can imagine , Wedgwood (its the one you see on Poirot) which was a wedding present ( well, lots of people bought bits ) But because it has a gold trim it can't go in the dishwasher . I have two sideboards and this is taking up all of the biggest one. And I no longer have a table which seats 12. So a bit of a white elephant even if lovely. It would be a shame but I sometimes think if I could find someone to buy the whole lot I would sell it. It does have some sentimental attachment though and does look nice at Christmas , high days and holidays etc but it gets shockingly little use. As and when my son settles down in his own house I might split it into 2 and give him a 6 place setting .Day to day we are using John Lewis every day / house. Not expensive , quite tasteful but dull. I'm going to keep an eye out for pretty / quirky things for a bit of interest.

And people wonder why I hang around on these boards - I would not have known abut the cabbage bowls otherwise 😋 Good a reason as any

can I suggest you use your nice plates on a day to day basis.
They're not giving much joy if only used a few times a year.
Get them out, use them, enjoy them. Worst that happens is one or 2 break, but if you're not really using them it makes no difference,
I've been using all my "nice things" for a couple of years and it brings a little cheer to my days

MrsFinkelstein · 20/03/2025 14:40

@BasiliskStare we're Scottish, and he got his pasta style bowl he uses from Asda I think, so £15 for one bowl is outwith his sphere of competence.

He won't have any issues with me buying it, but his lack of enthusiasm about the style and general gorgeousness of the bowl was disturbing.

I like the red cabbage one ❤️

BasiliskStare · 20/03/2025 14:53

@Mightymoog I know you are right , I do know you are right. TBH it's not the breakages I am worried abut it's the fact they won't go in the dishwasher. For other things eg clothes , I have absolutely stopped saving things "for best" and I know your principle is sound. When I wrote my wedding list I didn't even think about them being dishwasher safe. In fact I don't even think we had a dishwasher then (talk abut all fur coat and no knickers as my Granny would have said.) If I had my time again I would get something which could go in the dishwasher and use them all the time. But those were my salad days when I was green in judgment. I really am thinking of trying to sell it because there is £££s only being used infrequently. I'm definitely going to try and use them more though and as and when DS and his partner have their own flat and if they want them I'll split it into 2 sets of 6. DS likes them but I spent enough time trying to get rid of PIL's things after they died and after DH and his siblings had taken what they wanted & I don't want to land DS with a white elephant or a problem. My mother has a beautiful Shelley dinner service - never gets used - it's obviously in the genes. 😊

But you certain may suggest it and thank you for doing so. - I ought to do something about it one way or another 💐

BasiliskStare · 20/03/2025 15:07

@MrsFinkelstein Ah - I see. I wondered if he was being a bit <whispers> snobby but I see not . If he doesn't like the style different matter . I think the red one is nice too but green is more my thing. I guess the ASDA pasta bowl tells me he wouldn't got for the Liberty one or the antique faience ones even if you liked them and the antique one was available - £35.5k !!! Anyway I think there are worse faults in a husband than not being keen on an M&S serving bowl if he's happy if you're happy. Generally in this house DH is CiC of anything technological because he knows abut that stuff and is interested and Interiors etc are me (he does have power of veto - I am a benevolent dictator.) It sounds a bit 1950s but given how technical I am (not at all and no interest ) and his interest and taste in general interior design (less said the better) it works for us. DH is the sort of person who reads instructions . I am more of a punching at buttons like a lab rat on acid sort of person.
😂
I await your decision with bated breath.

There was a MN thread some while ago about not saving things for best. I’ve tried - really tried - and I have started slathering on the good moisturiser instead of hoarding it until it goes rancid… but still I’m using the Ikea plates whilst two dinner services (dm’s) sit packed carefully in paper in the garage. A third (also dm’s) makes an appearance at Christmas (when we elevate ourselves…) but occupies half the sideboard.

We were given 2 beautiful goblet glasses as a wedding present which I'm now using ( too many times a week) for normal cheap wine and it's lovely to use.

I also used my v.expensive mulberry gloves on the school run this winter and again it was lovely to use such nice things.
Get your nice plates used.
Imagine how lovely a green waffle would look on them.

MaturingCheeseball · 20/03/2025 15:32

Well, now you’ve convinced me with the thought of a green waffle…

May I give you a naughty tip!

I just put my gold rimmed stuff in the dishwasher!!
buggered if I’m going to wash up! 🤣
the worst that happened was that it faded away! And conveniently I could put it in the microwave after! 😀

BasiliskStare · 20/03/2025 16:48

@Mightymoog Thank you again.
I've just googled my dinner service where to sell and Christies sold one for £££s in 2021. Now 1. They had 35 plates / side plates cups and saucers and stuff but 2. it was from the collection of Mrs Henry Ford II ( who has more provenance than me 😂) Now I have - although fewer place settings more in each setting and all the tea / coffee set serving dishes etc. So I am going to email them and see if they are interested. I don't know if they do China in general but I'm going to ask. Probably not as I am only humble Mrs Basilisk from Basiliskville , Basilisk. But you have spurred me into action ! I will ask them where they recommend if not them. I did sell a lovely Arts and Crafts mirror though them once and they were very nice and easy to deal with. They do periodically do specialist auctions and not everything has to be worth a king's ransom.

BasiliskStare · 20/03/2025 17:07

@jeffgoldblum see above - I am going to see if I can sell mine and start again. A bit of a shame / sentimental value etc. If I had a bigger house I would keep it but I don't. I am emboldened by (I think it was ) you telling me you got rid of your wedding present canteen of cutlery. 🍽 We shall see.

MaturingCheeseball · 20/03/2025 17:25

If only I could get rid of my wedding canteen. Present from pil. Quite coincidentally both bil received exact same canteen… and weddings each five years apart. There was a tremendous row because sil asked pil for guarantee and they refused to divulge provenance. I knew it was a job lot - typical.

JADS · 20/03/2025 17:30

When my Dad died and we cleared out his house, no one wanted crockery. Not the charity or vintage shops. I free cycled a bit, but in the end a load went in the China recycling aka the Greek wedding bit of the dump.

I went home that night and got out some of my Granny's best China and ate fish and chips off it. It brings me joy every day and I throw it in the dishwasher. Now it's a bit rubbed, I like it even more.

Obviously none of it is worth £35k!

Whatever you do @BasiliskStare , I hope it brings you either joy or cash to buy you joy!

It’s spooky how many of us have the M&S cabbage bowls!

Is this the new upside down pineapple or pampas grass?

LavenderFields7 · 20/03/2025 17:43

Great analysis and observation @AtIusvue I didn’t even realise there was a website she was flogging stuff on.

Has anyone bought the Mrs Alice bunny bowls though??
I really want a photo from someone in the thread with them at home.
That would make me very happy.

To add to the plate talk these are currently my favourite every day plates. They are just the right size as pasta plates and really robust.

(Is my costco recommendation de-elevating the thread?)

StrawberryWasp · 20/03/2025 18:24

I agree about using the good stuff.

We had beautiful Czech crystal wine glasses for our wedding 25 yrs ago. We've used them every weekend and had real pleasure from it.
(Well I have and DH has nodded along happily. )

We now only have 2 remaining so bought ourselves a new beautiful set of glasses which are expensive but we're using them every week. I love them.

I'm now angling for the tumblers...

I used to hold onto things but storage became an issue, I didn’t feel I could get new things .

@Lifestooshort71 - Thank you for that timely reminder that we should be unduly criticising MM and not just "hanging out" and having a good time wherever the conversation takes us. 😂💐 Anyone would think <whispers> that we don't actually hate her 😊
