Mad. Do people literally create threads to bully Meghan?

Why is this allowed by HQ?

Do people literally create accounts just to come on Mumsnet to tell us what to do?

ThePoshUns · 05/03/2025 06:26

I managed 10 minutes of episode 1 and gave up it was so dull. The jar of bath salts wrapped in a Kieth lemon bandage? If my friend put that on my bedside table I'd think they had lost the plot. The whole concept is just bizarre.
Thanks to @AtIusvue for taking one for the team and sparing me from having to watch it all myself.

i can’t keep pace with the threads! I’m going to watch ep1 at a friend’ next week as I cancelled Netflix because their documentary was front and centre when they first did the Netflix thing and I couldn’t stand them on my screen every time I switched it on. I can’t imagine I’ll watch more than that - I actually never watched their doc either as didn’t want to give them any financial boost.

Will be interesting to see the stats on how many watched episode 1 and the drop off rate. The reviewers sound amazed by how crap it is.

Edited

Can’t keep up either!

I know it's a bit of a tired MN cliche but I do wonder if she might have ASD. I think it would make sense of a few things - intense but short lived interests, not really able to follow through, awkward socially, poor self-awareness, over-emotional / meltdown type behaviour, often a little off with how to behave, eg a bit over huggy or marching with the veterans, trouble maintaining relationships, friendships come and go easily, black and white thinking, other people seem to be either 'in' or 'out', sometimes comes across rude, makes ill-advised / blunt comments like not being paid for Royal events, lack of awareness of others (like talking about her amazing kids in front of bereaved parents), someone mentioned up thread that her eye contact is a bit off.

(I'm speaking as an autistic person who is also the daughter and mother of autistic people, so all of these behaviours are part of my daily life one way or another.)

MrsLeonFarrell · 05/03/2025 06:56

The Variety review made a good point. They said that it seems as if Harry and Meghan assumed that interest will follow them whatever they do. This isn't the case, as minor royals what they do needs to be interesting to get attention.

The other point that a lot of reviews seem to be picking up is one that we have talked about for a while, that it all seems a bit staged and artificial. This sort of show only works if you are authentic.

I hope Meghan listens to the parts about needing a clear identity because I think that would really help her in the future. Being yourself is far more interesting that being a persona, it's what the most successful influencers do.

At the moment it's all a bit
We love Meghan

Rather than
With love Meghan

She needs to move the focus from the former to the latter.

RecollectionsMayRealiseMyJamIsNotActuallyJam · 05/03/2025 07:09

It is Number 6 on the UK Netflix chart today.

According to Google the chart changes daily at midnight so will be interesting to see how it fairs.

And The Guardian has been mildly positive about the Sussexes until now...

The “vacuous joylessness” comment exactly sums it up.
When even the Guardian takes the piss out of you know you’re done for. Well most people would but I suspect not Meghan Bucket.

Stickystickysticky · 05/03/2025 07:42

I think her saying that she's a Sussex now is another failing on Harry's part, seems he hasn't explained about the difference between their titles and actual surname. To me it's a real kick in the teeth to the whole royal family and the tradition of bestowing titles and what they mean .

AtIusvue · 05/03/2025 07:51

This is jaw dropping! and brutally funny

https://www.economist.com/culture/2025/03/04/meghan-markles-new-netflix-show-is-out-of-touch-with-the-times

The economist:

One scene is “magical”. Another is “so pretty”. Another is “delightful”. Welcome to “With Love, Meghan”, Meghan Markle’s new cookery and lifestyle show in which she smiles at things in Montecito. In episode one she smiles at raspberries on a cake. In another episode she smiles at hydrangeas. She also smiles at bees, whose hives she keeps on her property. “When I think of honey, I think of bees,” she says, in one of the many insights with which the show brims. There have been doubts about whether Netflix was right to fork out a reported $100m in a deal with Ms Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, for this show and other content. Such doubts must now be dispelled.
However, Ms Markle is not just smiling. She is on a mission. As she explains, she wishes to “share some little tips and tricks” for entertaining friends and elevating one’s life. Such as, perhaps: make sure to marry a member of the British royal family. That tends to help no end. Or: ensure you get Netflix to pay you a vast sum to show off an immense property, complete with a vegetable garden, bee hives and chickens to lay fresh eggs. That helps, too.
This new eight-episode Netflix show, released on March 4th, is more or less Martha Stewart for the 0.01%; but aimed at the other 99.99%. In it she offers indispensable tips such as how to make candles with one’s own beeswax and how to boil noodles with tomatoes. Apparently first you place the noodles in a pan. Then you put in water. Then you take off the lid. Then the water will evaporate. Then they are done. At last. Everyone had been wondering.
The show is not only helpful; it is also following in a royally long tradition. Queenly types have often loved the simple life: Marie Antoinette had a lovely time in her toy farm near the main palace of Versailles—until she didn’t. And royal hangers-on have often monetised the monarchy: Pippa Middleton, the sister of Catherine, the Princess of Wales, once wrote a book titled “Celebrate”. It too was replete with useful insights, such as how to toast marshmallows over a fire. (“Long-handled forks” are, Ms Middleton explained, helpful, as are “flames”.)
The problem with Ms Markle’s new show, as with all cookery, is getting the timing right. Hers could hardly be worse. Her show celebrates California living and contains a scene of smoke at the start (used to calm the bees). This is jarring to even the most vaguely news-aware viewers, who watched as fires recently ravaged nearby Los Angeles.
Worse still, its overall air of wellness feels uncomfortable when two of the royals have been so very—and so quietly—ill. The combined total of Kate’s two videos about her cancer were under five and a half minutes. Here, Meghan takes almost as long to decorate a cake.
But it would be mean-spirited to carp. For the spirit of this series is generous and aimed at showing people how much you care about them. “Everyone’s invited,” as its trailer says. This is darling, if arguably not entirely true. It seems unlikely, for example, that William and Kate were invited (according to the most recent reports the couples barely speak) or Charles and Camilla (likewise).
Ms Markle says that she is “not in the pursuit of perfection” but “in the pursuit of joy”. This is charming, if not precisely the wording that others inside the palace use, which tend to have gone a little heavier on words like “abrasive”, “bullying”, “difficult” and “rude” to describe her. But then, perhaps those palace workers did not stop to smell—and smile at—the hydrangeas.

Meghan Markle’s new Netflix show is out of touch with the times

In it she positions herself as an elite Martha Stewart

I wonder if Meghan reads the reviews. She seems completely oblivious to criticism and never seems to learn or change her approach.

I think she does read reviews. And that is why she panics; starts half hearted things that she does not prepare for properly; has developed a reputation for being bullying and demanding and thin-skinned; abandons projects and leaves behind scorched earth.

Because she is desperate and probably it is dawning on her that by dissing the Royals so spectacularly she's killed the golden goose.

Plus I don't believe even SHE believes her own shtick.

FarmerDramaLlama · 05/03/2025 07:59

NF also relies on advertising now, and if people do switch it on, then switch it off then that is also not good, they need you hooked and sitting through them.

I think a lot of people want something royal from it. They don’t mention it once, they mention suits/canada, that history has been erased, but really it’s why she’s there. But there are hints at of jam and tea parties. It’s not enough to keep people interested.

I think someone on another thread said they have a war room , where all social media posts are read and analysed. I'm sure she had read all the scathing reports about her show , I suspect she will blame the criticism on people being jealous of her rather than taking them for what they are, which is the truth.

Yet she is still making digs about them. Apparently she said something in this show about not having been able to be creative on the past. In other words, the nasty in laws kept her locked up…

It has crossed my mind also and I’m speaking as the mum of a young man’s whos’s severely autistic, and as a mum and granny to a family (and extended family) with a very liberal sprinkling of ASD co-morbids throughout.

Im not familiar with HFA autism at though apart from suspecting my husband has HFA.

Well, that's worked for her in the past. She was the feminist activist taking on the racist institution, and look how much adulation she got for it! A lot of people believed her.

So of course she will return to it.

I think you're right @IcedPurple The money has already been handed over and, unless this is a real smash hit, the contract will be fulfilled and their 'partnership' over.
If that's the case, I wonder where she will go from here. Stating so relentlessly that 'This is who I truly am' is a high risk strategy because, if WLM proves to be unpopular, it's a clear rejection of the person fronting it.

I’d like to see her in daytime Channel 5 movies. The type that feel like romantic suspense thrillers but are never too intense to be on in the background while I blow my balloons.

Just before M goes on about having the same last name, Mindy says 'I don't think anyone in the world knows that Meghan Markle has eaten Jack in the Box'. Why is this woman so in awe of M? And why wouldn't she have eaten in a fast food chain? Before 2018 she was a nobody.

If she is making digs they don't make sense. Catherine and Charles both paint and have bees. Catherine and William have been on camera many times cooking at events plus the Wales children delivered home made pasta to people in lockdown, in nice bags with ribbons.

It's a if she is creating and rebelling against a royalty in her head which doesn't align with the reality.

It is interesting how in the People interview she was at pains to distance herself from being 'an influencer' and every review, good and bad, refers to her as an influencer 😁.

The show has a really low rating on IMDb, there you can view the ratings by country, most of the ratings are from the US, around 70% gave it 1star,

@MrsLeonFarrell it's not a competition of who did what they live in different continents and have completely different lifestyles.

Jacquettes · 05/03/2025 08:23

I don’t think the reviews matter. It’s the numbers who watch that matter. The Netflix CEO said that whether people love Meghan or hate her, they will watch her.

If enough people watch she’ll get another series I guess. I don’t know why the people who don’t like her and wish she would ‘be quiet and go away’ would want to encourage her by watching.

1)Apparently the website is up but none of the items are for sale as yet. I haven’t looked yet.

  1. And if you signed up - gave your email - check your spam folder as an email has been sent out (according to Sneha Mistri on Tik Tok, she found an email from As Ever there).

That my PSA for the day. Back to watch some more Meghan.

The one episode I want to watch is the one with Mindy Kaling. I have a huge amount of respect for her and I just don't get why she is on this series. The other celeb friends are relative nobodies (I assume Serena isn't in it), but Mindy, just why? I want to see if she is playing it for comedy.

I agree about the fast food bit though. We have seen her pre Harry burger flipping.
