The queens mother death when I was in primary school.

When I first got my pocket money and I asked who the lady in it was. I was told that she had a good given right to rule over us. I got excited and said "Maybe that will be me some day". Everyone laughed at me and explained that it just gets passed on to her kids.

"What a wonderful system" I thought as I put my 50p into my piggy bank.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 03/03/2025 16:17

I suppose the first time I took any notice of them, not coming from a Royalist family is Diana outside the Taj Mahal all by herself and all the talk at that time.

Mightymoog · 03/03/2025 16:17

princess Anne coming to visit our school.
She landed by helicopter on the school field and the whole school went out to stand and cheer../.........
Except me and 2 of my friends who even at that age (13 or so) loathed the whole concept so we snuck back into school and were in a classroom when a teacher found us.
She started telling us to get out and on to the field then realised that may be a mistake and told us we could stay there!
Shame I didn't make banners and protest propelry!!

Charles and Di getting married- everyone at my school was given a little book about it. Not sure whether this was a local scheme. DH lived in a different part of the country and they all got a mug.

National savings stamps with picture of Princess Anne (sixpenny stamp) and Prince harles (one shilling stamp) Also the coronation of the late Queen. We ddn't have a TV atthat time but got to watch it at my Aunt and Uncles house.

Dollydaydream100 · 03/03/2025 16:19

I remember attending a street party at my aunts house in the 80's for Andrew and Fergie.

Weepixie · 03/03/2025 16:20

When I as a very little girl and my mum and granny were discussing a picture in the paper of the Queen and Queen mother with one of the children being vaccinated. It was done to encourage the public to have their children vaccinated. I’m 67 now.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 03/03/2025 16:20

Princess Anne's first wedding.
Think we may have had the day off school - although I'm a little hazy on that,
They may just have wheeled the TV out for us to watch it.

Kissedbyfire1 · 03/03/2025 16:21

I think watching Prince Charles’ investiture as Prince of Wales on tv in the school hall.

Manchesterbythesea · 03/03/2025 16:22

Princess Diana on a mug in our house. We are in Ireland but my mother is English. She wasn’t into the Royals though so it was a strange one. Everyone said she looked liked Diana so maybe someone bought it for her. I dunno. I would have been really young so maybe early 80’s.

BillStickersWillBeProsocuted · 03/03/2025 16:23

My first strong memory is coming down stairs in the morning to find my mum watching TV and she told me Princess Diana had died in a car crash - I was definitly aware of them before that though!

GoldMoon · 03/03/2025 16:23

I remember when they used to show the queen & Prince Phillip on foreign tours and also on the Royal yacht .

ICanTellYouMissMe · 03/03/2025 16:23

Diana coming to my nursery. In my head I gave her flowers but not sure if that's a real memory or not tbh.

Scottishdreams1991 · 03/03/2025 16:23

My mum crying because diana died. Must've been only 6 at the time

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 03/03/2025 16:23

Charles & Diana's wedding. I was 4.

It always makes me feel old/surprises me when I meet adults with no memory of it. It was SUCH a big deal

BeaAndBen · 03/03/2025 16:28

Princess Anne getting married - I was about 4, I think. The dress had a satin train and huge sleeves. I was fascinated by it.

Snorlaxo · 03/03/2025 16:29

Watching the Charles-Diana wedding at school.

MrsLeonFarrell · 03/03/2025 16:31

The Queen drove near us on the way to an engagement. My Dad waited and took a photo as she passed. So my first memory is a black and white, perfectly focused photo, of the lady in waiting. The Queen was obscured by sun shining on the car window.

I was probably around 6.

I grew up in a village that the Queen had connections to, so I was probably aware of the Royal family earlier than is usual.

WingingItSince1973 · 03/03/2025 16:33

Prince William being born. I was at a kids clubs and we were asked to guess names and I said David 😂 I was only little 😂

MerlinsButler · 03/03/2025 16:33

A street party on 77 for the jubilee I think. Everyone was involved.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 03/03/2025 16:35

Being taken to see the queen in reception 1986. A black car drove past. Underwhelmed!

GaryTheGoat · 03/03/2025 16:36

Silver jubilee street party in 1970 something, we got a big coin as a souvenir

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 03/03/2025 16:36

Princess Anne's wedding in the early 70s. We got the day off school and my Mum took us to a neighbour's house to watch because the neighbour had a colour TV. Half the street was there but it was sooooo boring. I think I was about 5.
