The queens mother death when I was in primary school.

It’s funny how the silver jubilee in 1977 made an impact for so many of us. I was the same. The Queen and Prince Phillip visited our town and drove just past our school en route, so we all went out to stand on the roadside and wave flags. I was 5.

I suppose my children will likewise remember the events around QEII’s diamond and platinum jubilees.

Princess Di

Will mania, when Prince William was a teen and we started to see more of him and got all those pictures of teenage girls with I love Wills signs, the shy photos of him in the blue and white check shirt at Balmoral with Charles and Harry. The little film of him cooking in his dorm. I'm similar age to him and he was my teenage celebrity crush!

I was given memorabilia for the queen’s jubilee in 1977, I was 4 or 5. Can’t say I remember the occasion and we didn’t live on the sort of road that would’ve been suitable for a street party.

I came across it recently when clearing out my parents’ house after their deaths. There was a coin, a badge and a mug.

I put them in the skip 😬

Maybe the 1977 jubilee, not sure really. Not a royal loving family so wasn't much commented on.

My mum, however, could remember being taken by her dad to Buckingham Palace on VE day, and the RF stood on the balcony and waved. She was miles away, on her dad's shoulders (I guess she was five). No TV really in those days. For a very long time she thought the royal family were teeny weeny people you could fit in a matchbox.

I can 'see' myself, almost 4, my younger brother was in his playpen or something, it was snowing very hard and I trailed after Mum to the side of the house to get some coal, it was late morning. The neighbour from across the road came to the end of our path and called to Mum 'Oh isn't it awful they've just said on the wireless that the King's dead!', it was 1952.
However, my mother always insisted that never happened, my Dad brought her a cup of tea before he went to work and told her it had just been announced on the radio.
Fast forward to HM's various Jubilees and it was said that the death was announced at 11.30am, sadly Mum had died years earlier so I couldn't say 'Told you so!'.
After the Coronation we wnet into town to see her on her tour and as we were walking back to the bus her car drove across as we were waiting for the lights to change and she waved at me, or so I thought.

I still use a Charles and Diana mug, at least the mug lasted!

Princess Anne getting married - I was about 4, I think. The dress had a satin train and huge sleeves. I was fascinated by it.

It was one of the most elegant royal wedding dresses.

AnnaMagnani · 04/03/2025 15:42

Lady Di getting married on my birthday!

I had a big poster of the engagement photo on my bedroom wall.

I also wrote her a letter and got a reply about how pleased she was that she was getting married on my birthday. Sadly from a secretary or it would be a family heirloom now.

Igotmylipstickon · 04/03/2025 16:11

Probably when Charles & Diana started dating. I was around 8 years old and remember seeing them on the tv after getting engaged and wondering why she liked him as he looked much older. I also remember thinking that they didn't look like they loved each other.

FromTheOfficeOfJammyTodger · 04/03/2025 18:56

The 1977 Silver Jubilee. I remember the ladies organising our street party coming round for weeks beforehand collecting our contributory coins. I remember long trestle tables, bunting and the sort of British party spread food we never got at home. I remember receiving a comb in a case with the royal coat of arms on it and QEII's dates of reign, as well as the big silver commemorative coin and jubilee mug (I still have the latter 2 items). I remember that it was a really sunny day and it was all very exciting, because we didn't have or go to parties much in my family. Not "royalist" memories, just those of a child growing up in an otherwise fairly grey and joyless world. I would have been 5 at the time.

Princess Diana dying! I was 4 and I remember watching it sat on my granddad's knee.

AnnaMagnani · 04/03/2025 19:47

OK I don't remember the Silver Jubilee. But I do remember my Jubilee Teddy that my mum knitted for me in honour of the occasion.

And that it was before the days when people would have multiples of their toddler's teddy so it could always be washed. So eventually it got revolting (says my mum) and she threw it away.

As you can see, I'm not over it.

Laserwho · 04/03/2025 20:30

Silver jubilee when I was very small. We watched her and prince Philip drive by in her car while we all waved flags. I probably had a street party but I don't remember it

rockstarshoes · 04/03/2025 20:36

Princess Anne's Wedding to Captain Mark Phillips! We made a scrap book at Infant's school!

faffadoodledo · 04/03/2025 20:38

@rockstarshoes came here to say the same!

Being taken to see the queen in reception 1986. A black car drove past. Underwhelmed!

I could have written this! All the details are the same.

We waved flags that we’d coloured in ourselves. During the colouring, one girl and one boy went rogue with the colour scheme and our teacher was very cross. As we walked to the correct road, I moaned to the headmaster that it was too far.

I don’t remember actually seeing the Queen’s car, but I drew a picture of it, so I must have done.

OrsolaRosso · 04/03/2025 20:42

Princess Anne's wedding is the first thing I can remember, and the first thing I remember watching on TV. I was 4.

barumph · 04/03/2025 20:44

Seeing QE2 drive by in her limo in Bootie in 1977. I was 6.

MrsPernicious · 04/03/2025 20:46

Blue Peter doing a piece on Princess Anne passing her HGV licence.

abracadabra1980 · 04/03/2025 21:01

The silver jubilee and all the street parties.
Being forced to watch the Royal wedding whilst on holiday in France. I had zero interest in it and thought Lady Diana and her dress sense were completely 'square'. I still do think this about the royals. I like Kate, but her dress sense is 'safe and mummyish'. I can't stand Meghan, don't even class her as royal, but she dressed very well (apart from that brown outfit with the mushroom shaped hat). She seems to like a lot of sleeveless clothing which really suit her. She just dresses cooler than the rest.

Londonrach1 · 04/03/2025 21:05

When my neighbour got out her best china to lend out and someone called Diana used one cup...sadly washed up so no idea which one was used but the set was used and huge discussion re if you were using the cup .. it was the 80s..

Princess Margaret’s wedding in 1960 . I think it was the first Royal wedding to be televised ( black and white).

Snap.
That's my first memory. Probably because it was a really big deal thay it was televised.

CathyorClaire · 04/03/2025 21:20

Not being allowed to open Christmas presents until the queen had had her say.

All in glorious black and white 🙃

rockstarshoes · 04/03/2025 23:00

I actually think my mum & dad rented a colour Tv from Radio Rentals for Princess Anne's Wedding actually 🤣
