Is there another couple like the Sussexes Part 2

With this new authentic Insta post where Meghan positions herself as a go between in securing some signed merchandise I think there's still plenty to discuss.
This is a new image. No make up. Carefully edited insta. New lips. Is this influencer territory? Mention of " my husband and l " Echoes of the Queen ?

I agree that neither Meghan nor Harry have any discernable talent, so cling on to the royal titles for the status they bring, and the doors they open.
However, even though they lack ability, they could have carved out something positive to work on, even in a limited way.
They could then have had a productive and dignified life, rather than behaving in such a greedy and mendacious way. However, their choice.

Zara's career is years in the past.

She’s still competing!

JSMill · 11/02/2025 17:33

Yes I would imagine Americans envisaged a Disney princess kitted out in ballgowns and tiaras.

I see what you're saying, but I don't think this takes account of the cultural differences between the US and the UK (I live in the US, am from the UK). People here don't really care whether you're bowed to and called Your Royal Highness: they see it as all a bit obsequious and silly, difficult to take seriously and difficult to believe that people still do that stuff! All the gilded carriages etc are just points of reference, things to be fawned over like the Mona Lisa or a Renoir. A self-made woman (like Gwyneth, for example) would be way more impressive, a modern great person. If she succeeds (which I really, really doubt), she'd have far greater prestige than 3rd lady.

Out of interest do Americans find bowing to the Emperor of Japan silly or is it just the British who are viewed that way? What about etiquette for other world leaders?

Well, there you go. I didn't have a clue that she was still competing.

I think that shows that her high profile has at least as much to do with her royal connections as her sporting career.

bratsummer · 11/02/2025 17:53

IcedPurple · 11/02/2025 15:12

So she gave up the chance to be 3rd lady in the realm, ranking behind only the Queen and Princess of Wales, hanging out with world leaders at state dinners and being patron of prestigious charities, in order to flog cheap jam in shopping malls in Philadelphia?

I think it’s expensive jam 😜

I’m not sure there’s an Erewhon (bougie grocery store) in Philly is there? That seems more the place. They did a collab with Hailey Bieber iirc.

BasiliskStare · 11/02/2025 18:08

@bratsummer "I’m not sure there’s an Erewhon (bougie grocery store) in Philly is there? That seems more the place. They did a collab with Hailey Bieber iirc."

I think the thing is it is in Philadelphia ( and Dallas ) because that's where the Netflix shops are and they are trying to promote the show. I suppose if it is a real success there she might have a wider choice of outlets.

DolliDimples · 11/02/2025 18:10

Uricon2 · 11/02/2025 16:59

I toitally agree without royal adjacency the titles will become meaningless, if not a burden and a lot of doors have clanged shut on them already, more so if as suspected Netflix don't renew. Harry's what is it $1 million a year from BetterUp won't go far with the current lifestyle. Invitations to appear on the podcast were rejected by the likes of Taylor Swift who would have got huge listening figures and although I'm trying to keep an open mind about the forthcoming style/whatever series, I can't see it being a raging success. Then we have Polo and ARO.

Harry was actually really bloody lucky that Spare came out well before the King and Kate were treated for cancer, because had it appeared at that time the opprobrium would have been monumental. I can't see him risking another tell all tome at this point, for that reason, how crass it would seem.

It rather begs the question of what they can actually do to generate serious amounts of money. I for one am stumped, based on the King Midas in reverse track record thus far.

They didnt think it crass to broadcast the OW interview in the weeks when PP was in hospital on end of life care or the NF docuseries and Spare a couple of months after the death of HMTLQ along with the accompanying promo interviews and previews.

With the money they had, they could have bought an estate and lived quietly somewhere (with greatly reduced security costs) and only appeared in public life to support a few carefully chosen causes. A Californian Highgrove or Gatcombe, if you like. But M would never have gone for that.

Very good point. Many routes were open to them..

Mylovelygreendress · 11/02/2025 15:42

She didn’t want to be 3rd , she wanted to be 1st

I'm not sure this was it. I think, perhaps wrongly, that she wanted to be equal to the others, the same glory and world fame but being able to pick and choose the public 'performances' to suit.

I did wonder that myself. Would Meghan be as disrespectful of other cultures around the world, or is it just Harry's British culture? Thank goodness she left the royal family if so, when you think about how much foreign travel it would involve, all in front of cameras. Massive potential for embarrassment and offence.

Uricon2 · 11/02/2025 18:43

@DolliDimples you're right but they got well and rightly castigated for it. I'm sure that he has enough material for another magnum hopeless even if he hasn't seen his family properly for ages, but I think it might be in reserve at the mo, not least because I have a slight suspicion that he at least doesn't want to completely burn the boats, at least with Charles. I imagine he knows William will be a different story.

I do wonder if they have any regrets about the course they took, because 5 years in it isn't going well and the champagne lifestyle on a lemonade budget is unsustainable.

I had forgotten the NF series and Spare were released only a few months after KC's mother had died. What kind of person does that to a grieving son.

Well i think in public it's not an issue but even i thought in private when it's judt them together as a family not on some public event, tour or hosting an event then yeah I think it's silly to still have to curtesy to the Queen. After all that is your private time, down time, why the need ro keep up thr formalities in private.

But that’s the point, there is no down time. You don’t stop being the monarch behind closed doors.

I think Japan is different enough, and not present enough in daily life, for anyone to think about it. I don't think I've ever heard mention of it, ever, in all my years here! Whereas the news and late night political comedy shows (a bit of an institution) etc don't hold back on noticing and even mocking the British RF if the situation presents itself. Not sure the Emperor meets with US dignitaries as frequently as members of the RF.

There's history with the UK (obviously), and British people and politics are celeb culture are far better known that those of any other country. I'm not talking about within specific diaspora (some of which themselves have their own history with Britain). Just generally.

From ZaraTindall.com

Zara continues to compete at the very highest level with some impressive results at Chatsworth in 2022, Lexington USA in 2023 and at Badminton in May 2024.

Nags and their riders ain't my bag.

Are these little heard ofs considered 'major events' for someone pushing mid forties?

Sam McKnight, who used to cut his hair, begging for Harry to do something with the wisps

‘For Harry now, that fluff on his head is like a newborn chick and it is just horrible. It says 1950s geography teacher. It doesn’t make a man look good. He’s lost so much weight, he looks really fit, he’s in his prime – sort yourself out, mate. It’s been driving me mad for years, and I don’t know why he hasn’t had a hair transplant yet or shaved it all off.’

JSMill · 11/02/2025 21:45

Badminton is "little heard of"?! Are you joking or seriously don't know anything about the equestrian world?

I'm not a horse person, but even I have heard of those events , @CathyorClaire . It's just general knowledge. Show jumpers can compete well into middle age at high level (look up Nick Skelton), and there's no reason why ZT wouldn't be able to compete in another Olympics due to age if she was one of the best jumpers in the relevant qualifying period. Bear in mind that since she won her Olympic medal in 2012, she's had her 3 children (and had 2 miscarriages) and started a business, as well as continuing to compete for the British Team.
