The royal family

Is there another couple in the world like The Sussexes?

I was musing last night about this aspect - they had the world at their feet. Despite what Sussex Supporters like to suggest most people in the UK nodded their heads " yes it was lovely Harry was getting married finally" . I had never heard of the bride myself as I don't watch American tv shows of that ilk. She was black or biracial? It didn't even enter my head what colour she was initially and then as coverage started it didn't make one iota of difference one way or the other. I recall the day of the wedding - it was sunny and the pubs were full of royal cheer broadcasting the wedding.

And then it all started to where we are today.

Are there any other couples in the world who have gone through such a downfall? Is this a feature of the social media arena today?
We see P Diddy and Blake Lively and others exposed now through SM.
You can't count the Duke and Duchess of Windsor in this category as they were always unpopular.

Can you think of any examples of people who have fallen so spectacularly?

I know people say " they live in California, they have money blah blah" but their reputation is one that most people would not want.

Is it purely because of their seeming complaining and sense of entitlement ? I mean you don't see the real philanthropists in this way - in fact you rarely hear about them and what they do.

Her incessant need to interrupt and talk to the Queen during the children's display 🙄 and the hair playing. It was a lesson for her between posed images and the reality of being out there.

That was the visit where she was advised to wear a hat and refused .
Also , there is footage of the Queen’s Aide reminding Meghan not to walk in front of the Queen but she ignored that and went forward .
But Andrew …..

Didn't she also get into their departure car before the Queen?

veraswaistcoat · 25/01/2025 12:33

Seemingly the Queen always liked to sit behind the driver in a car but Meghan didn't know about this. M was inviting the Queen to go in first but the Queen signalled to her to go in first so she could get her favoured position. The only reason I know this is these old items are being rehashed currently. I'm not obsessed with them 😂

This is hilarious! Bringing up all these old grievances that most likely means tiddly squat to anyone royal

These threads do amuse me!

Shock horror! No hat!
OMG she walked one step in front the queen!
Heads should roll. Disgusting

A lot of the Meghan discourse isn’t stuff she’s done, it’s “her body language in this video definitely means she’s done something”. Muddies the waters for genuine discussion and critique.

SirChenjins · 25/01/2025 12:37

The antics of H&M amuse me far more - they’re the gift that just keeps on giving 🤣

Meghan’s supporters blow hot and cold on this issue too though. Constantly holding hands with Harry is clear evidence of how in love they are. Anything else Meghan is observed doing is evidence that the person who has observed it is obsessive and biased…

If Sussex Supporters don’t want “ old grievances” brought up , maybe they should stop going on about Camilla’s alleged behaviour back in the 1980s ?

Oh no, I completely agree! And in fairness it happens with most celebrities. I’m more interested in discussion about words and deeds (which equally divide interpretation), but I do find it fascinating how two camps can view the same footage and extrapolate equal amounts of nonsense from it – as you say, the hand-holding is a great example.

The pro H&M camp interpret it as true love and an example of their “refreshing shake up of the stuffy royal establishment”; the anti H&M camp make entire YouTube channels dedicated to what they call The Claw. Meanwhile, everyone in the middle is like “I think they’re just holding hands, you guys”.

She was Queen of more than just England. James vi of Scotland succeeded Elizabeth I and became King of England and Scotland, so yes, the last Queen of England, indeed the last monarch of just England was Elizabeth I

Sorry, but just to be clear, Anne wasn’t considered a Queen of England even though the Act of Union was passed a few years into her reign?

I’m not a historian but am interested in history. I had always thought she was technically the last Queen of England and first Queen of the Kingdom of Great Britain, is this incorrect? (need to know should this come up in a pub quiz 😆)

That's interesting, actually. So you think the family was kind to her when she had all these protocol gaffs, and none of it meant anything to them. Why, then, did she go on Netflix and complain about all the things she wasn't told about/allowed to do, and how unfair that was on her?

She was Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland when she came to the throne in 1702. The act of union 1707 united the kingdoms politically ie they were all to be governed from Westminster. So yes she was the first Queen of GB as a politically united state, but she was always more than just Queen of England. England and Scotland had shared the same monarch since James I. But not the same Parliament. We have obviously returned to a similar situation to this since devolution (although the nations are clearly not independent)

Misorchid · 25/01/2025 13:49

Big reminder to me of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. He completely in thrall to a stronger personality like Meghan. A lot of hatred at the supposed break up of the Beatles by the relentless presence of Yoko, similar to the estrangement of H&Ms families. John’s family estranged and ill treated (allegedly).
The once loved John, like Harry, disliked.

NotaRealHousewife · 25/01/2025 13:52

I don't think it's fair to blame the women, these men are adults and need to be accountable for their own actions

Harry seems to have managed to achieve being a prize plonker on his own merit

No head rolling required but it does display a distinct lack of manners. You clearly different from me because I don't find rudeness "hilarious".

As for old grievances - Camilla/Diana, the 1990s??? I see them brought up often enough by the Harry and Meghan fan base!

I do have quite a lot of sympathy for Meghan here. It wouldn't occur to me it was rude to walk a tiny bit ahead of the Queen. Or that half the bits of protocol they are all meant to abide by were real or actually important.

The bit in the documentary where she demonstrated her absurd OTT curtsey was cringeworthy certainly. But her surprise that she was expected to curtsey at all when she was meeting her boyfriend's granny seems totally reasonable to me. I wouldn't have expected to either. She thought you separated the person and their relationship to you from the public role. A perfectly sensible expectation.

BasiliskStare · 25/01/2025 16:49

@CurlewKate re I see no reason to doubt that the PofW has been receiving treatment for some form of cancer.. However, there has been a lack of clarity-she has had preventative treatment, she is cancer free, she is in remission...Obviously she has a perfect right to share whatever she wants to-or to share nothing at all. I was just wondering whether that freedom would have been granted to others. That's all.

I may be misinterpreting you and please do say if I am - by others - I would say in my case , given I am of no interest to anyone other than family and friends I would not have to speak about medical things to anyone I do not choose to & I have that freedom. I wonder if I have misunderstood your point. Genuine question.

DappledThings · 25/01/2025 16:54

Where's the lack of clarity? She had preventative treatment because they thought she might have cancer. Then they found out she did have cancer but it had been removed/cured somehow so she is now cancer free. As much as anyone is ever cancer free after having had it. Lots of people use in remission and cancer free as interchangeable.

I'm not being facetious, I really don't understand what anyone finds secretive or unclear about anything that's been announced about it. Other than the actual type of cancer.

Stickystickysticky · 25/01/2025 16:59

My mum had ovarian cancer, the tumour was removed and she had treatment to kill off/prevent any rogue cells from taking hold, so preventative treatment.

I'm pretty sure she would have been told what the protocol is. If a member of the public gets an MBE for example, they are advised in advance how they are expected to behave. I can't imagine that a member of the family wouldn't have been similarly instructed.

I don't think I'd walk ahead of anyone I didn't know very well and who was senior to me?

Her boyfriend was a dick for not telling her in advance how she was expected to behave. I'd probably have expected much more informality in private. Although Meghan could also have asked whether there were any expectations and how she should address the Queen, for instance. I wouldn't have expected to rock up, hugs the Queen and call her Liz!!

Maybe if she had graciously accepted the support she was offered, from Sophie and/or Lady Hussey, she wouldn't have been in that position?

Maybe to of all of that.

But none of us actually have any idea how much information she was given and expected to remember and how much help or not. Plus how much just sounded daft!

I'd make a terrible Royal wife too because I'd find too much of it laughable and would consider my marriage more important than a load of silly rules about curtseying and who walks where and when.
