Harry v. NGN

Starting a thread for Tuesday.
This BBC article covers the basics. This is the last line ….
Tuesday really is the beginning of the end. And someone is going to lose - and lose big.

I have a feeling, that Harry won’t win but he just wants to use the public setting to air his grievances. A therapy session would have worked out much cheaper.

Prince Harry leaves the court during his hacking case against the Daily Mirror. He wears a dark coloured suit, white shirt and tie. His barrister David Sherborne, also dressed in a dark suit is on his left. A crowd of photographers are behind a metal...

Prince Harry versus newspapers: This is the one that matters

Prince Harry’s legal battle against British tabloids for allegedly unlawfully intruding into his life reaches its most important moment on Tuesday.

I'd also just like to remind the readers that it was Harry who pushed for the settlement in the past few days.

His team approached NGN, NGN had a settlement offer on the table for months but were prepared for court.

I'm sure Harry's settlement was substantial, but the fact he approached them about it makes me wonder if it wasnt an increased settlement NGN suddenly offered, or Harry being willing to accept what was already there. Which indicates to me a settlement at the lower end of the figures claimed.

Well, no – a source says Harry approached NGN. Sources can say anything they like.

The NGN camp would like it to look as though Harry caved. Harry’s camp would like it to look as though NGN panicked and made an eight-figure offer. The truth is probably somewhere in a “recollections may vary” zone.

The bile on this thread is awful.

Why do people hate someone they’ve never met (and are never likely to meet) so much?

Bizarre.

Prince Harry has done really well to get this apology. It can’t have been easy but he felt clearly felt strongly about this - not surprising as it particularly affected him growing up and had a clear impact on his mother.

It would take someone quite obtuse to not accept journalists editors etc did not suspect illegal activity by their PIs. That’s probably how Prince Harry was able to push them as far as he did in their apology. I hope the police take it up now.

There are some pretty sour posters on this thread.

“For Harry himself, his critics will surely attempt to pick apart the victory, claim he failed to truly hold his tabloid enemies to account, and then return to lambasting every aspect of his life in California.
But we should not lose sight of what he has achieved in this legal war: an admission of 15 years of wrongdoing at one of Britain’s most powerful newspapers.”

”Harry was the only one who had the resources to pursue a claim and the stubborn drive to keep going, no matter the consequences.
Only that combination could push NGN to the brink of a trial and into an admission of wrongdoing on their flagship British newspaper, a precious jewel that had been protected for so long.
When the dust settles, it’s worth reflecting whether the justice system itself is doing enough to get to the truth. You could argue David sometimes doesn’t stand a chance against Goliath in our courts, if it’s the full truth they are after. And there aren’t many Princes who are willing and able to fight the battles instead.”

uk.news.yahoo.com/opinion-prince-harrys-stunning-victory-145233226.html

Only time will tell whether he has achieved anything and personally I am not sure that he has, but what do I know?

The apology is just lawyer speak to fit the circumstances and it doesn't admit anything that NGN had not already admitted.

People here and elsewhere have been saying for ages that Harry should have settled rather than let it drag on for so long. So today he has done what a lot of us felt he should have done ages ago.

However, it's the "slaying the dragon" shit he came out with, that he would settle for no less than full accountability, yet that is what he has done.

I think he will feel a bit shit about it all when he has time to reflect.

Like it or not, NGN are the real winners here because they have not been called to account!!

Where?

JoyousGreyOrca · 22/01/2025 23:59

@Partybagprick Did you not notice that I did not claim the police prosecuted the journalists who accessed Millys phone? Because you are right that is not what happened after they discovered the phone hacking.

And you are being very disingenuous as I was responding to a particular comment you made. Not giving a full scale timeline of exactly what happened.

Polka83 · 22/01/2025 23:59

MrsFinkelstein · 22/01/2025 23:46

This is so much easier to argue in a "positive spin", Harry didn't "lose" his trial, he got ££ and a public apology. Easy - he "won". Boo, evil tabloids.

So much more tricky to PR spin relentless bullying of numerous staff into a positive.

So this thread - for some posters- is not actually about the merits of Harry’s case and its outcome. It’s just another excuse to criticise him? How petty.

jeffgoldblum · 23/01/2025 00:00

Hate? , I don't particularly hate anyone ! But I will tell you what I hate , people who lie and twist the truth for their own narrative.

JoyousGreyOrca · 23/01/2025 00:01

Anyway, Harry won. He received what is being reported as an eight figure settlement from NGN. And the Sun for the first time have admitted their involvement in illegal activities by private investigators they hired. They had previously claimed not to have engaged in illegal activity. So a clear victory.

jeffgoldblum · 23/01/2025 00:03

Harry hasn't won , neither has he lost , he settled.

JoyousGreyOrca · 23/01/2025 00:03

@MrsSkylerWhite There are a number of very prolific posters on MN who hate anything Harry and Meghan do. Absolutely everything. If Meghan wears a dress, if they donate to charity, if there are photos of their children, if there are not photos of their children...just everything.

jeffgoldblum · 23/01/2025 00:04

Neither this nor bringing up poor Millie dowler has anything to do with this thread.

So what did you think of the article in Vanity Fair then?

JoyousGreyOrca · 23/01/2025 00:04

The pedants are back. Yes a judge did not stand up in court and say Harry you won your case. Pedantically the case was settled out of court. But the settlement is clearly a win for Harry.

jeffgoldblum · 23/01/2025 00:05

Facts are irritatingly facts !

There’s a VF article thread for that. Actually it’s full, but feel free to start part two. This one’s about the court case.

Neither this nor bringing up poor Millie dowler has anything to do with this thread.

Milly was brought up because there was a disagreement about how the Leveson public enquiry came to take place.
What happened to Milly both in terms of the crime against her and how journalists behaved is shocking.
A member of my family was murdered and it was all over the tabloids. I know how terrible journalists behave in the name of entertainment. It is disgraceful.

He has pushed the NGN to accept that they used PIs that acted illegally at the Sun. This is a huge admission as it also shows that NGN lied to the Leveson enquiry.

We should be wanting to know more about the relationship between the press and the police and our government - more than ever with this NGN apology. There is a suggestion Starmer shelved a Leveson 2 enquiry for support in election by Murdoch.

I think that is something that everyone can be unanimous on. It was absolutely horrendous and the way the press behaved, as it turned out, was an utter disgrace. I don't like the way her tragic end has been dissected on this thread, which as you have just pointed out, is about Harry's case.

JoyousGreyOrca · 23/01/2025 00:09

Harry won.
The US are reporting his victory.

"In a stunning victory for Harry, 40, the younger son of King Charles III, News Group Newspapers, publisher of The Sun and the now-defunct News of the World, also admitted it had intruded into the private life of his late mother, Princess Diana.
Harry's lawyer, David Sherborne, said the publisher had agreed to pay the prince substantial damages. A source familiar with the settlement said it involved an eight-figure sum."
