Starting a thread for Tuesday.
This BBC article covers the basics. This is the last line ….
Tuesday really is the beginning of the end. And someone is going to lose - and lose big.

I have a feeling, that Harry won’t win but he just wants to use the public setting to air his grievances. A therapy session would have worked out much cheaper.

Prince Harry leaves the court during his hacking case against the Daily Mirror. He wears a dark coloured suit, white shirt and tie. His barrister David Sherborne, also dressed in a dark suit is on his left. A crowd of photographers are behind a metal...

Prince Harry versus newspapers: This is the one that matters

Prince Harry’s legal battle against British tabloids for allegedly unlawfully intruding into his life reaches its most important moment on Tuesday.

No, someone's disgusted that you can't debate the matter without flinging insults.

How childish.

I can’t even… 🤣

They’ve been hit in their wallet and having to make that apology would have hurt Murdoch. Massively.

Oh crap, it's the nature of a settlement, a bland statement and a payout. And Murdoch is laughing all the way back to the boardroom.

Choccyscofffy · 22/01/2025 22:16

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 22/01/2025 22:14

Wise up, they are still in the same positions of power and wealth.

And as usual it's those much further down the feeding chain that carry the can.

If you think that's a "win", then I am sorry for you.

What did you think a trial verdict would do? Confiscate all their money? How naive.

boredashellbythiscrap · 22/01/2025 22:16

It is being reported in the media by most outlets as a victory for Harry which is causing some of the royalists on this forum to be angry and upset.

I think @mainecooncatonahottinroof is definitely rattled and spooked about Harry winning millions 😂

I think you have nothing to say of any value.

I’ve not seen a MN bunfight this frothy in ages, it’s great. 10/10, no notes, well done, Harry.

Yep. Who would have thought Murdoch’s biggest fans would be on Mumsnet.

It may blow your little mind but I would have liked to see Harry take them on.

I'm more than one dimensional you see. Most of us are.

Even if the settlement was as large as your 'source' is claiming, that still won't be a massive amount to NGN as they've been paying out vast sums over the past two decades.

The apology may have stung a bit but it makes no material difference to Murdoch or any of the other big players at NGN. Harry was all about 'accountability' and proving complicity at the highest level, but instead it's just unnamed freelance private investigators taking the blame. No dragons have been slain.

No point in trying to explain - just some people who aren't that bright spoiling for a fight!

Let's stick to the grownups!

It’s not like it’s the first apology Murdoch has had to sign off on though. And it got him exactly what he wanted - the last potential court claim against him went away. The last chess piece off the chess board.

(Rupert Murdoch has literally just been suing his children to take away their voting rights over his legacy company, because he thinks only one of his children shares his political views and opinions. I think he’s quite hard nosed!)

Shareholders are very interested in P&Ls and the share price is down 7% today.

If you companies shrug off losses like these happily, you are very naive about big business.

boredashellbythiscrap · 22/01/2025 22:22

@mainecooncatonahottinroof you seem to be more upset that you can't continue to criticise Harry over this case rather than seeing him take them on as you are suggesting.

Tell me, what would have happened to the share price if Harry had won at trial?

Boards don’t like share price drops, but they hate risk and uncertainty more. Settling these cases removes a huge risk hanging over them. Companies and their investors love strategies that remove risk.

How would the share price have been affected if Harry had taken NGN to court and proved complicity in unlawful activities by senior staff, as he had pledged to do?

Peston says:

“It is worth two minutes of your time to read News Group Newspapers apology to Prince Harry and Tom Watson, in which for the first time the Murdoch organisation admits “unlawful activities carried out by private investigators working for the Sun”. This is the first time the Murdoch group has admitted “unlawful activities” by the Sun. The statement is attached”.

Who knows? But Harry has had a victory today, and good on him.

Lazy writing by Peston. The statement admits “unlawful activities” carried out by private investigators, not employees of the Sun. There’s a difference.

(and since I posted that statement on the thread earlier, yes, I have read it).

Does this Peston bloke not understand that admitting unlawful activities by freelance PI's working for The Sun is not the same thing as admitting to “unlawful activities” by the Sun"? It's a pretty crucial distinction, even if this Peston guy you're such a fan of seems not to get it.
