When will pointless King abdicate

in favour of another bastion of the Monarchy? Loathe them all but assume it will take another generation to allow them to bow out in some sort of graceful manner - and hang onto loads of Titles, Land, Jewels, money etc. How has someone given the title of 'Queen Consort' i.e ex Mistress is now referred to as Queen and bestowed privileges e.g being allowed to allocate Royal Warrants? Don't know how she's got the gall to wear jewellery that previously adorned previous incumbent let alone the late Queen. Luckily, she does bugger all but retire to the home settled in the Divorce, smoke fags, drink Gin and Dubonnet (smells just like Granny!) and ensures stock of fully functioning Mont Blanc Fountain Pens are to hand - ready to be despatched to King at the faintest sign of a tremulous lip.

It seems to be taking too long for people to wake up, imo.

Anyone whose parents are rich are born into wealth. Where do you draw the line?

Maybe at those whose enormous riches have come from colonialism and slavery. That's where I do, anyway.
But what do I know? I am just a Russian bot.

When will so-called "republicans" wake up to the fact that support for the monarchy is running at 60%+?

That's a bigger percentage than got the UK out of the EU or kept Scotland in the Union.

Life's bad enough in this country. Can't see how becoming a republic would change anything.

chickenlettuceunderbacon · 14/01/2025 10:00

Yawn

PS. OP, it's not even amusing or well-written. School report says: Potentially interesting idea, woefully executed. Try harder.

Support for the British monarchy is on a steady decline, in this country. Given the growing disparity between the 1% of the richest people- which the royal family is part of, and the ever increasing number of people falling into complete poverty, and people just having less and less in general, whilst the royals grow incrementally richer, with each year, is becoming ever more apparent, especially to the younger generations. People are realising that an archaic relic, that is the monarchy, does not correspond, in any way, to the modern life and its ever increasing struggles of the average person.

British Social Attitudes data shows that public support for the monarchy has fallen to a record low.

I love how much Camilla upsets people.

He won’t abdicate.

Happy Tuesday!

angstridden2 · 14/01/2025 10:14

I think the Monarchy needs to rebrand on the Scandi model, pared down with fewer hangers on like Andrew. Personally I wouldn’t care who ‘opened’ the new hospital or sports centre and I certainly don’t want to support them to the tune of £ms a year. However republics don’t seem that great at the moment looking at the U.S. At least our monarchs have little power and don’t have to sell themselves to get voted in.

Hardly. Support for the monarchy is on a steady decline, in this country. With ever increasing poverty and inequality a lot of people are waking up to the fact that such unearned wealth and privilege that is the royal family, when so many have so little, is wrong.

It's had a very small decline, and only in the u24s is it less than half (37%) and that's including the 'don't knows' (45% if you re-do the maths excluding them)

And its been a constant pattern that support in the younger age groups is lower than in the older ones - that's been the picture since at least the end of WW2.

Overall, support across all age groups is 65% (72% if you exclude the don't knows)

It's a small reduction, possibly temporary. Only when it's consistently around and sometimes under 50% is it likely to be referendum territory. But remember that when Australia last voted in a referendum and the polls showed such a low level of support that everyone thought it was a foregone conclusion, they RL vote was for the monarchy to remain.

Monarchy and unequal society aren't synonymous - look at the Scandinavian and Danish examples for monarchies that rank amongst the most egalitarian on the planet. Easy to find republics that are amongst the worst (deliberately not diverting thread by naming and shaming!)

Halavonna · 14/01/2025 11:25

Nothing that is said or discussed is going to change anything any time soon re RF, apart from a growing indifference to them I reckon.

I am one of the indifferent. However I constantly ask myself "What should I respect them for?". Can't find a satisfactory answer really.

SheilaFentiman · 14/01/2025 11:33

Had Charles and Diana not divorced, Queen Diana would be on the throne after various affairs also, no?

GirlOfThe70s · 14/01/2025 11:40

@Paradoes but how you could sit and be called Queen of England 😂😂😂😂 well that’s a mockery !!

Queen of the UK surely???

SheilaFentiman · 14/01/2025 11:33

Had Charles and Diana not divorced, Queen Diana would be on the throne after various affairs also, no?

And would also be Queen Consort. As Kate will be. Something that bizarrely still seems to be news to a number of people.

SleepyHippy3 · 14/01/2025 11:45

In Denmark the royal family has been properly paired down, and they are in no way as money and privilege greedy, as our royals are. For example, in 2023 King Frederik and Queen Mary got around £1.5million for fulfilling their duties, and that includes cost to cover for running their residence and for staff. This in contrast to the UK Royals getting £86.3 million, for period 2023-24, this further being bloated to £132 million for the 2024-25 period!! And Charles is a billionaire, who is getting incrementally richer, every day. What an incredible difference. Maybe the Scandi royal families have a better chance at surviving, given how more humble and self aware they, in relation to the citizens of those countries.

SnidelyWhiplash · 14/01/2025 11:52

We definitely need to look to the European royals like Denmark as an example of how to do it. Last year, they had a simple proclamation ceremony when the new crown prince took over. No monstrous, vulgar and ludicrous coronation like Charles had and which cost the tax payers £72 million and the home office £22 million.

competentadult · 14/01/2025 12:18

The grass isn't usually greener. Presidents don't come free of charge. And they can create more division by adding an extra layer of political opinion to the debate at a time when we need to unite. Democracy is in decline and we need to focus on defending it from bullying dictators, not infighting over something that will ultimately be irrelevant if we take our eye off that particular ball.

Do you always judge people based on their looks?

Only those who are born with silver spoons 😀 🥄

There is nothing posh about saying “oh do” when it is followed by “f off”

Agree, posh people would never abbreviate fuck to f.

FoxInTheForest · 14/01/2025 12:35

Get over it, plenty of people like the royal family and the historical and cultural meaning it has, its not going anywhere for the foreseeable future.

I loathe them all too. And none of them are anyway good looking 🤣 Well apart from H& W's wives. You imagine Kings/Queens/Princes/Princesses as beautiful and handsome
That the Royals are not, particularly Charles.

Sounds like you believe in fairy tales. Not all princes are handsome and not all princesses are beautiful. We don't live in a Disney film, you know.

Mischance · 14/01/2025 12:42

ex Mistress is now referred to as Queen - I certainly agree about this. IT is a disgrace that this woman has power and status just because she shagged the PoW.

Turophilic · 14/01/2025 12:43

He’d need the sceptre prising from his hands - he waited too long to give up the crown now. Can’t be doing with him. Or any of them.

Her Maj had love and respect because of the sheer longevity of her reign and because she kept quiet and aloof. That time has passed, and most affection for the monarchy with it.
