Meghan and Harry have released a statement in regards to the California wildfire via their Sussex.com website.

It reads:

”In the last few days, wildfires in Southern California have raged through neighborhoods and devastated families, homes, schools, medical care centers, and so much more – affecting tens of thousands from all walks of life.
A state of emergency has been issued.
If you feel compelled to help, here are some resources and ideas:
Support
Organizations such as José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen, which has been a longtime partner of The Archewell Foundation, are serving meals to both first responders and victims of the fire.
CAL FIRE and LA Fire Department Foundation and others are working closely to support firefighters who risk their lives, bravely showing up in these high-risk environments to help save homes, families, and communities in need.
Animal Wellness Foundation is continuing to house and care for animals evacuated by the fires while Compton Cowboys is providing emergency transportation services for horses.
Airbnb and 211LA have partnered to provide free, temporary housing for those who have been displaced.

Baby2baby is providing essential supplies including diapers, clothing, hygiene products, and emergency kits to families in need.
All Power Books and many others are staying open for emergency use, offering supplies and water for pickup while working tirelessly to distribute essentials to those affected.

Open your home
If a friend, loved one, or pet has to evacuate and you are able to offer them a safe haven in your home, please do. And be sure to check in with any disabled or elderly neighbors to see if they need help evacuating.
Give back
Some families and people have been left with nothing. Please consider donating clothing, children’s toys & clothing, and other essentials. The American Red Cross is on the ground helping those in need.”

Helping animals helps us all.

Non-profit organization leading in animal rescue, animal protection and awareness; and low-cost medical care. Adopt, volunteer and foster opportunities available!

I couldn't agree more. All those private jets and multiple cars, air con etc. it really can't continue.
It's not good enough for them to claim "offset".

It's the water usage too - it's crazily high in the wealthier areas of southern California, with the proliferation of huge 'curated' gardens, ornamental orchards, all-day irrigation systems, multiple ornamental ponds, spas, swimming pools that require frequent refilling, fleets of cars that need hosing down daily, and houses with more bathrooms than bedrooms.

Insurance companies started pulling out of many of these areas many months ago. They know the game's up, even if the residents with the massive carbon footprints won't face up to it yet.

It's far worse in parts of the Middle East and the global south, where the relatively richer people have 'lifestyle' water and others don't even have enough to drink and to subsistence farm.

I'm afraid I've become very sceptical about 'offset'. I've heard about/seen so many badly planned tree-planting projects where they just cram in huge numbers of saplings, 80 % of which don't survive more than one year. But they can still say they've planted X thousand trees. To thrive, trees need space, very careful planting and a lot of after-care and that's not always happening.

Offset is not the silver bullet.

JanuaryCrow · 10/01/2025 07:52

BeatrizBoniface · 10/01/2025 07:48

That's what I'm thinking. Maybe reflect on how many times private jets are used for starters.

A lot of the celebrities issuing statements are bloody hypocrites. They'll be back on their private jets soon enough.

ChicagoPizza · 10/01/2025 07:53

The Beckhams did the same thing and so did Jennifer Aniston.

JSMill · 10/01/2025 07:54

I think lots of celebrities do this kind of thing but I have a problem with this coming from the office of'. They have no official roles and they live in a country foreign to the country which gave them the title.

BustingBaoBun · 10/01/2025 07:56

People don’t like being told to do something like “donate” or “open up your home” unless the original person is also contributing

OP they are. A pp linked an article and I have seen it in other media as well. They have donated, they have opened their home, so you have no need to criticise them. Even the Mail has an article saying they have opened their home. I'm surprised you don't know

itsstillmehere · 10/01/2025 00:16

I'm seeing Jennifer saying to look after wildlife fleeing.

And the others? Is Jennifer Anniston opening HER house to wildlife?! Why not. Otherwise it's all just a bit self indulgent isn't it?

SallyWD · 10/01/2025 07:59

Perfectly fine statement. Contains useful information. However, because they've released it, it will probably be torn to shreds.

mitogoshigg · 10/01/2025 08:00

Seems like a pr response when they don't have anything more concrete to bring to the table

Well that is where you're wrong isn't it? they have opened their home, they have donated, they are drawing attention to sources so that others can donate. In fact they've done far more than others

Your post is just criticism for the sake of criticism

I did say further down on my post that they probably are. I don’t know why you cherry picked that little snippet of my post and not the other part. It feels like you’re ripping apart any post you think might be being critical and jumping on that?

No.

Doesn't make sense. I'm not 'ripping apart', I am just pointing out that there are many articles in the media saying they have opened their home so they are not telling people to do something that they are not doing themselves

CBS and ABC put out lists last night. I found them when I googled " donate California wildfires". It looks as though their PR copied the lists.

Every influencer and friend I have in the LA area have been posting the same list & organisations on social media. Absolutely nothing special, classic PR slacktivism.

Meghan is privately fuming that the fires are the final nail in the coffin for her Netflix series.

Meghan and Harry have people staying in their house? Who? When?

But you purposefully omitted the next part of my statement to suit your narrative of ripping apart anything that you perceive as anything even slightly critical against the current.

@itsstillmehere "They have opened their own home? Is there a link for this ?"

To be fair, I don't think anyone is suggesting that people "open their homes". Just that they offer a home to friends and loved ones and their pets. Which is a very different thing.

Is it ?

Christmassoxs · 10/01/2025 08:23

What is the actual problem, not that I can see one. with M&H posting this ?
They say something they get bashed, they say nothing they get bashed.
I'm with them on this one, no need for bitchiness of any sort from anyone.
Am I eve allowed to use the 'b' word outside aibu? 🤔😁

Would you prefer, that no one, tries to help anyone else? ESPECIALLY them, they should say “No, let’s just stay quiet, say nothing, everyone can say nothing??”

That isn’t what I said. I don’t see that their post helps in any way. If eg they were associated with these organisations then I would understand why they would post, but they aren’t.

I know exactly what you said. And it's obvious it's a criticism.

I am not 'ripping apart' which would quite likely go against talk guidelines.

I am querying your post when a PP linked to an article saying they had opened their home and it is all over the media. They had said they are. And it was in a link in your thread

There are lots of articles yes. In worldwide media too. So they clearly issued a press release telling the world how great they are, like they issued one saying they’d made a statement via their office. Got to love that couple! 😀
