Sussexes statement about Californian wildfires

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 09/01/2025 19:47

Meghan and Harry have released a statement in regards to the California wildfire via their Sussex.com website.

It reads:

”In the last few days, wildfires in Southern California have raged through neighborhoods and devastated families, homes, schools, medical care centers, and so much more – affecting tens of thousands from all walks of life.
A state of emergency has been issued.
If you feel compelled to help, here are some resources and ideas:
Support
Organizations such as José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen, which has been a longtime partner of The Archewell Foundation, are serving meals to both first responders and victims of the fire.
CAL FIRE and LA Fire Department Foundation and others are working closely to support firefighters who risk their lives, bravely showing up in these high-risk environments to help save homes, families, and communities in need.
Animal Wellness Foundation is continuing to house and care for animals evacuated by the fires while Compton Cowboys is providing emergency transportation services for horses.
Airbnb and 211LA have partnered to provide free, temporary housing for those who have been displaced.

Baby2baby is providing essential supplies including diapers, clothing, hygiene products, and emergency kits to families in need.
All Power Books and many others are staying open for emergency use, offering supplies and water for pickup while working tirelessly to distribute essentials to those affected.

Open your home
If a friend, loved one, or pet has to evacuate and you are able to offer them a safe haven in your home, please do. And be sure to check in with any disabled or elderly neighbors to see if they need help evacuating.
Give back
Some families and people have been left with nothing. Please consider donating clothing, children’s toys & clothing, and other essentials. The American Red Cross is on the ground helping those in need.”

Helping animals helps us all.

Non-profit organization leading in animal rescue, animal protection and awareness; and low-cost medical care. Adopt, volunteer and foster opportunities available!

They are probably telling people about the time they have to live in a small cottage given to them by the Queen

It seems their communications office is a bit lacking as they have only M’s insta and the over grandiose ‘from the office of’ for joint use. They need additional, better options

They currently have the Archewell website, the 'Office of the Duke and Duchess' site, and now Meghan's Instragram.

Why do they need another 'joint' media outlet? Didn't we get all those hints about their 'professional separation'? How many couples have 'joint' social media? It just seems like a relic of their royal days, but they are no longer working royals.

The grandiosity is the whole point.

Edited

Archewell on insta would have been my choice for this one

I think they need SM for joint matters. Then they aren’t forced to use (faut de mieux) a ‘from the office of’ press release in circumstances which is pretty out of step with how everyone else is managing their comms. It’s conspicuous, sure, but not really in a good way.

@itsstillmehere

"Google maps is your friend"

It would be-if I cared that much. I'll leave that to you.

Well it would stop you making statements that you don't know about the area you have just commented on 😂

@itsstillmehere "It's still the furthest away from where they live"

Is it? Fair enough. I don't know much about LA geography.

Like here...

What 'joint matters' though?

Weren't they supposed to be 'separating professionally'? And surely any of their 'charity' work could go through the stupidly named 'Archewell'?

And I don't think they're 'forced' to use the 'office of the dook and dookess' website. Meghan could have put an informal post on her Instagram along the lines of 'Harry and I were devastated to hear blah blah blah'.

The whole point is that they are pretending to be still royal and to have an 'office' related to their titles. When in fact no such 'office' exists and their titles are meaningless in California.

They could have rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into actually helping.

It's very hard not to be cynical given their background.

CNN, Sky and others all quote the mayor saying that they did help, were there for longer than the 45 minutes that’s become gospel in this thread, worked and did more than hugging.

MaturingCheeseball · 11/01/2025 18:08

There was simply no need for them to be there. Uvalde all over again.

Yeah, they single-handedly put out all the fires and saved every resident in the vicinity while they were at it.

changecandles · 11/01/2025 18:13

@pelargoniums

Really, she could be personally out there fighting fires and donate her entire fortune to help, and she’d still get criticised. She’s been critiqued on here for posting about her dog dying; I’ve seen her criticised for carrying gloves instead of wearing them?! She’d be shat on for saying nothing about wildfires in her home state, she’ll be shat on for saying something.
Absolutely. People just can't stop themselves. It's like an illness

We have no idea how many cars, of what type, fuel efficiency or fuel type – could be they drive electric vehicles anyway. Average CO2 footprint calculator says an average fuel consumption large car of unknown fuel type driving 111 miles creates 0.04 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

I’m all for bashing them for private jet usage or other unreasonable carbon consumption or journeys – flying to self-aggrandising prize ceremonies, or holding a baby shower in New York when she lived in London, for instance, but we can’t really lay the climate crisis at their feet for an 111-mile journey to help out in their home state. And we have no idea if they distressed the locals or if people were quite comforted to see them.

It was an unnecessary 225-mile round trip, whatever transport they used. It is a shame their Travelyst chairperson has resigned or he could have advised them against the trip.

IcedPurple · 11/01/2025 16:32

People in a disaster struck California town were 'comforted' to see the 5th in line to the British throne and his former cable TV actress wife?

Just to clarify - in my post rhat is getting referenced I was referring to the observation made by Serenster that the distressed local M was photographed hugging was seen leaving with them.

I wasn't suggesting they actually caused any locals distress.

I read the Sky article, it doesn’t say how long they were there, but it says they made two visits in the same day and were serving food “anonymously”. He says they weren’t there for publicity (apparently that needed to be stated). Two visits in one day doesn’t suggest hours on the frontline but if they were indeed working, fair play.

The mayor also said they wanted to be taken to “personally thank” the firefighters. This is what grates with me. I cannot imagine why they would think their “personal thanks” were appropriate or worth having.

I agree with you that it grates that they are that up themselves. I just don't get why the authorities there don't tell them to do one.

Why would they go away and then come back? Is that not bizarre?

I'm sure the firefighters felt warm and fuzzy inside after getting their "personal thanks"!!

People on X saying the 2nd visit on same day is because TMZ photogs didn't get there in time for the first visit. 😃,

If it wasn't for publicity, why did they allow the TMZ photographers trail them, as they leave the security area, Harry turns back and waves goodbye to the guy, it certainly looks like they had agreed to be photographed and videotaped.

They checked SM as they were making their way home and realised 45 mins wasn't cutting it and instructed the driver to turn round 'we are going back'!

No one suggested anything approaching this. Are you OK?

elessar · 11/01/2025 18:47

Does anyone know what time their 'second visit' took place, in local time?

If their first visit was earlier in the day, it would be hard for them to have spent much time "working anonymously" if they then left (to go where - surely not all the way home?) and came back later in the same day, all while it was still light.

Meghan and Harry are aware of what sound bites they want to put out there, so I'm sure they did help anonymously - but I highly doubt it was for any meaningful amount of time.

Sadly sounds very plausible! Why make two visits otherwise - if you're there to help wouldn't you just stay and put in the work until it was time to go home?
