With Love, Meghan - criticisms and genuine concern for her mental health

Lavenderfarmcottage · 05/01/2025 16:34

I am probably going to be flogged for posting this and chased down the dark laneways of Mumsnet as bystanders yell “Shame Shame Shame”.

I weighed in yesterday about a thread on Meghan and her new Netflix show. I made some criticisms about the trailer and certain cliche’s in the way it was produced. Hypocritical of me to be posting this but I feel guilty and have reflected. I am actually looking forward to watching it on Netflix and my criticisms were pretty minor and not exclusive to her show - it’s a common issue I have.

Meghan has struggled with mental health because of criticism. The reaction to ‘With Love… Meghan’ has been fairly brutal.

I think it would be really good if we refrained from saying anything negative about the series or Meghan Markle. That’s not the point of this thread.

I want to know if you think the criticisms have gone too far. The Princess of Wales is not on the scene and we are protective of her rightly so. That leaves Meghan as media fodder though.

Do you think it’s time Meghan and Harry were given a break ? I do. I think we’ve been far too harsh and the criticisms have gotten out of hand.

I think we also forget the cultural relevance. If we went into the homes or Gwyneth, Julia Roberts etc and I would probably feel the divide too. American culture doesn’t apologise for wealth and hollywoood is highly competitive.

Having a confident demeanour, throwing your head back Julia Roberts style when you laugh and unapologetically selling $$$ vagina products like Gwyneth Paltrow is how it over there. People talk loudly and confidently and are polished and rehearsed especially in the
Competitive world of Hollywood…

Are we all being too hard ?

Or was that just banter? A humorous game of thrones reference?
@Choccyscofffy

Honestly? Yes, of course it was.

Tasteless, but it was Jeremy Clarkson. Ridiculous to take it seriously.

How would you react if Jeremy Clarkson's called for Catherine to be paraded naked through the streets being pelted with excrement?

MummyJ12 · 07/01/2025 13:27

It isn’t our job to coddle her. It’s important to be clear….right?!

My sympathies lie with the people who have been and still are affected by her bullying. The dossier hasn’t been released because the Royal Family don’t want to air the dirty laundry. I very much hope that we get to see the findings one day but I doubt it.
The fact that there was an independent investigation speaks for itself.
Cultural differences cannot be blamed as new allegations have now surfaced of the bullying of staff in the US, via the Hollywood Reporter, which is absolutely not a rag. It’s the industry bible. (See Smiley’s post above) they have affidavits from these people so it’s not sensationalism.

The ice cream story is well known. Mean girl behaviour of the highest order. She wants to be linked not ranked. Unless she’s above you in the pecking order, then it seems to be fine. (Call me ma’am).

Everyone would still think he's a knobhead. Which I'm sure they did regarding the comment about Meghan too.

What’s the ice cream story ?

CurlewKate · 07/01/2025 13:44

@MrsFinkelstein "Yes, as you will be very well aware, he was roundly condemned for it, bother here in the MN RF and outwith."

I'm glad to hear it. That's not how I remember it, and the fact that it appears to have had no impact on his life or career also suggests otherwise. But I'm sure you know best.

MummyJ12 · 07/01/2025 13:44

Typo. Smilesy’s post! Sorry @smilesy 😊

What’s the ice cream story ?

On a hot day, Meghan organised an ice cream van to be sent to Kensington Palace, it allegedly came with Meghan's strict instructions that it should only be enjoyed by the Sussexes' staff even though they worked in the same office as the then Cambridge’s staff. The Cambridge’s staff could only sit and watch while only the Sussex’s staff got ice cream. Just cruel and unnecessary.

MummyJ12 · 07/01/2025 13:51

Another example is when she bought a member of staff a Charlotte Tilbury lipstick but only gifted it on the condition that they hand over their old lipstick in the shade that Meghan didn’t like. Which is just so control freakery.

If that story is true that was a power move. Trying to show who the better more ‘kind’ employer is. Quite shitty really

CurlewKate · 07/01/2025 13:56

She made all her staff get rid of their dogs and issued them with new spaniel puppies so they would all match.

Ah yes I remember that now .
Nasty.

CoffeeCantata · 07/01/2025 13:58

The fact that Meghan gets more hate than Prince Andrew the rapist will never not be weird.

I assume you're referring to the tabloid press or YouTube, or SM in general? Because I haven't seen any examples of what you call 'hate' towards Meghan on this thread - or indeed on MN for a very long time. Hatred is a very strong emotion and I see irritation, exasperation, incredulity, annoyance, mockery, eye-rolling etc but not 'hatred'. Please supply an example of hatred in case I've missed something.

I do understand your predicament though. You need to believe that MNers 'hate' Meghan - it's part of the victim culture she herself is so fond of (and that's not 'hate' either, btw). But they really don't, from what I read here.

And, like it or not (and I cannot bear the man) Prince Andrew is not a convicted rapist or even technically a paedophile. No-one is interested in him - he's not a controversial figure, is he? What is there to argue about? I've never seen any difference of opinion on him on MN, so I don't understand your point. What a boring thread it would be if we all piled on to say how horrible he is.

Ah, now you’re minimising controlling and bullying behaviour. Nice.
Not surprised at all.

MummyJ12 · 07/01/2025 14:01

These incidents are well documented. But the scales have to fall from the eyes first.

The key word is allegedly.

MummyJ12 · 07/01/2025 14:12

Well it was reported it their favourite go to magazine People. The source was a friend of Meghan’s…..! Another shoot yourselves in the foot move.

CurlewKate · 07/01/2025 14:15

@MummyJ12 "Ah, now you’re minimising controlling and bullying behaviour. Nice.

No I'm not. I'm poking fun at the ridiculous unsubstantiated claims. The real examples I will take very seriously indeed.

MummyJ12 · 07/01/2025 14:20

There will never be enough “convincing” evidence for some. It will always be deny, excuse, refuse to believe.

@HunterdeButts "The Robert Hardman biography of QEII that came out last year includes claims from a courtier that the Queen got very upset, saying they took the only thing that was truly hers, her nickname."

Obviously we can't know- but I cannot imagine QE2 saying that in a million years!

Why??? Did you know her personally?!

Choccyscofffy · 07/01/2025 08:40

Calling people ‘mental’ for pointing out there is a mat with toys on it is seriously weird. You said it’s ‘factual’ that there were no toys and then admit there were 6 toys. Which is it?

It’s clear that she did care because she sat on the floor to be close to the babies/toddlers. Maybe she missed Archie and wanted to cuddle a baby. How dare she, what a witch, eh?

Again, your rants about her baby shower and wedding guests are weird, you don’t know anything about it.

Seeing as you called this poster "unhinged", it takes a brass neck to complain about a retort!!

There were reports of the baby shower. Maybe it's just you who doesn't "know anything about it"! The wedding guests were present at the wedding as it was televised!!

trivialMorning · 07/01/2025 14:41

the fact that it appears to have had no impact on his life or career also suggests otherwise. But I'm sure you know best.

Clarkson was roundly condemn in media and on here at the time - to extent I think he actually apologised publicly as he should have done.

I don't think it hurt him long term as it's on brand - him being a twat - he's made a career as a presenter with that persona. He actually assaulted someone at BBC and got publicly sacked and condemned then managed to get an amazon TV contract so can't even say Meghan comments are worst his careers survived..

Prince Andrew everyone thinks is bloody awful - there's no debate as no one defends him.

Meghan's made a TV show and trailer to sell it - she probably getting more flack because of who she is than other similar programs but this could work out for her in more eyeballs on the product especially as PP says Netflix don't seem to be promoting it yet it's all wresting ads. If it has some sort of charm or appeal the curious will stick around it will get word of mouth endorsements

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 07/01/2025 14:41

Choccyscofffy · 07/01/2025 08:43

I think you’ve got that the wrong way round.

The lengthy posts are coming from those Poppy who think they know which celebrities Meghan isn’t friends with.

The name calling is coming from posters like Poppy calling people mental for pointing out there is a mat with toys on it.

So, let's get this straight. Calling Poppy "unhinged" and "weird" isn't name calling???!!

Rightttttt...

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 07/01/2025 14:42

Choccyscofffy · 07/01/2025 08:47

Seriously, this level of aggression is weird. She doesn’t know you from Adam, she doesn’t care.

She doesn't know you from Adam either so I don't know why you're hellbent on defending her.

That's pretty weird!

Samcro · 07/01/2025 14:44

he's not a controversial figure, is he?
saying that about PA shows a lot.

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 07/01/2025 14:46

atotalshambles · 07/01/2025 09:13

I completely agree, OP. Leave the woman alone. If you don't like her show, don't watch it. I am not really a royalist but I feel so sorry for them all particularly the female members - Kate and Meghan - who seem to get so much hideous abuse and criticism. If you don't like either of them it is completely fine but writing horrible things on the internet is awful.

Even though the criticism is merited??!
