Yes. I said above that this is why I think they need to stop using the titles at all. They are in such a no win situation trying to be both royal and celebrities at the same time

They haven't yet understood that they can't be both. They are either one or the other (and they've burned their bridges with the BRF), so celebrity it is.

And tbh I think that's a far better fit for Meghan and she'll be far happier when she accepts it. Harry it won't be, and thats going to be a struggle for him.

The office of the Duke and Duchess has issued a statement.

They really are unbelievably self important

Yes Meghan is obviously much happier in the celebrity world, it's what she knows and understands.

Harry told us he wasn't happy as a royal and he doesn't seem particularly happy as a celebrity. Maybe at some point he'll stop blaming everyone else for his problems and start thinking about what he really wants?

Meghan updated her new Instagram account to ensure it included her title, so the trappings of royalty are clearly very important to her, even in her 'celebrity' life.

I don't think Harry knows what he wants at all. He has no clue of how the real world functions, even a very privileged version of the real world. He may claim not to have 'liked' being a royal, but I think he just took the deference and prestige of his status for granted. He thought it was about him, but really it was about the family he so disparages.

(edit) IMO Meghan is ultra aware that she is who she is now solely due to who she married and his family.

I don't know whether she feels she needs to try and match that with her own endeavours (noble but hopeless) or live up to it?

He certainly needs to grasp that royalty only have status in context. I really want them to ditch the titles but I don't think he knows who he is without his and she, mistakenly imo, believes her's gives an advantage.

They left the UK five years ago. That's a long time not to have figured out who they want to be. I actually suspect they didn't want to leave the RF permanently. They just thought if they threw their toys out of the pram, the RF would beg them to come back, which didn't happen. That's why H is so angry and bitter.

That's definitely true.

And if he hated being royal so much, why did he accept a peerage title on marriage, have a big royal wedding and have his wife be a working royal?

It doesn't make sense.

I don't think her title as such gives her an advantage.

However, her royal connections certainly do.

The problem is, she was only royal for a very short time and that was 5 years ago. It's not obvious what she can do to be successful as a 'celebrity' at this stage. She did the 'lifestyle' thing a decade ago, but the world has moved on since then.

They seem to have done everything in a rush since they left and therefore burnt through a lot of options that may have worked with a little planning and thought.

I agree with PP who said that they never intended to leave. It was clear from their initial statement that they wanted half in half out, that is being royal and making money. The fact that it was never going to work requires a depth of understanding about the status and limitations of the Royal family in the UK which neither of them seem capable of.

"DID" is the operative word. There are no Royal connections now.

Based on their released Archewell accounts, they are not very generous with their donations. I think the highest single donation they made was something like 300K to a university department..

"Harry told us he wasn't happy as a royal and he doesn't seem particularly happy as a celebrity. Maybe at some point he'll stop blaming everyone else for his problems and start thinking about what he really wants?"

I recently came across this most excellent speech that JKR made to Harvard graduates in 2008. She really is so wise and witty.
Anyway, with reference to her parents pushing her to do a degree she didn't want to do she had this to say:

"I would like to make it clear, in parenthesis, that I do not blame my parents for their point of view. There is an expiry date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you."

Wise advice indeed. If only someone had given H&M this advice many years ago. Not that they have a track record for taking advice well.

They just look so pompous making announcements from their office. Dear God.

Markle knows the title is vital, that's why she hangs onto it. Harry doesn't know who he is...he was lured by the idea of being feted by Hollywood as some sort of new Royalty in the US and that's bombed. He doesn't have the brains or work ethic needed to make it on his own. The machinery around the RF supported him, but he failed to understand that they curated an image that the public liked and that he needed that support.

If they had an ounce of integrity they'd renounce all titles. But they don't, and they won't as they need them to generate interest. The RF is doing the best job ever of 'Grey Rocking' them.

They know exactly who they want to be. They just don't have the knowledge and experience, the work ethic and the personal warmth and relatability to become those people.

Harry over estimated his importance to the Royal Family. Time has passed and he is even less relevant than he was then.

He's like the Duke of Windsor wandering about in his pretend court.

Many rich in the area will be making huge donations, there’s no way they will do the same!

But maybe a large donation of jam ...

I think he's also lost a LOT of support from the British public because he had a cheeky chappie teen / early adult persona, but as an adult he's turned into an entitled ass, manipulative, doesn't care about lying, has the mask of 'just call me Harry' but behind his mask is his real face and persona which is ugly.
Once him and Meghan married there was a big effort from the British supporting them but Meg's got greedy, decided along with the title she wanted a fortune (probably realised she had very little in reality and no control over things) so wanted half in Half out ... ie making money off the titles which isn't allowable my HMQE2 and off they flounced ... however the British public have turned their back on this spiteful couple who do nothing but squinney about what they should get

Absolutely this. I suspect “H” was pandered to his whole life & bad behaviour brushed over or forgiven. He can’t believe this stuck. Sometimes I feel a bit sorry for Meghan, I think an angry, resentful, petulant Prince Of The Realm, would be very hard to live with. Anyone watched Wolf Hall? I couldn’t help thinking of Harry during some of Henry’s sillier moments 😁

I read that Meghan wrote to Charles asking for a face to face meeting so that he could explain why they weren’t allowed half in/ half out when other such as the Tindalls were allowed to earn money . She/ they don’t seem to understand the difference between a working Royal and a non working Royal .

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 10/01/2025 14:59

If that were true, I'd have accepted the request, and done a PowerPoint for her illustrating the reasons it was different.

Bullet points, slide transitions, the lot.
