Nigella also had a cookery column in British Vogue.

Yes, I always enjoyed her column. My point was to the poster who said that she was a professional chef/cook with years of experience. This wasn't the case. She was a journalist who had written about food amongst other things and was a keen home cook. I think Nigella is great and have all her books so I'm not criticising her.

Population of 68m so, yeah, I would say so.

Squad reaction right there

Of course the whole thing might be different but success is still going to be predicated on how Meghan comes across and if people like her, because that's the nature of this sort of programme

I think this is an important point. People might watch a bit because they want to see, not just what the show is like, but how she comes across. And if it's not likeable, then they'll switch off.

I would find it hard to take that sort of gamble on whether people will like me. I'd see it as placing myself in a very exposed position. But perhaps a professional actor can separate out performance from self rather better than I would; though surely it must blur when playing yourself.

She must be very confident that she portrays a very likeable person. 😬

Haven't read the thread so may have been posted already. But the Marchioness of Bath is trending on X (Twitter).
It seems there are certain similarities of style to Emma's Kitchen at Longleat which has been running for several years.
It's also noted that Emma is actually half Nigerian.

Have to say Emma is just gorgeous and come
across so well

CheeseandMarmiteToastie · 03/01/2025 13:24

@Housewife2010 you're right and I stand corrected. However Nigella must have been doing it for 25+ years now, maybe longer, so I think she qualifies as a pro if not traditionally trained.

I have a personal dislike of celebrities taking jobs from people who are better qualified or more talented just because they have a high profile although I obviously understand how it works and that me not liking it won't change anything!

Betchyaby · 03/01/2025 13:25

@GoneGirl12345 Her skin colour is irrelevant. People don't like her because she is a horrible person.

Aren't all these 'influencers' kind of similar though?

It just looks generic and bland to me. Maybe that kind of thing appeals to some, but I'm not among them.

itsstillmehere · 03/01/2025 13:27

The Victoria sponge makes me laugh. I buy the little bitty ones from M and S food to go. What has Meghan done to make it extraordinary? To show that she is thinking of you?

StrawberryWasp · 03/01/2025 13:29

Nigella also had a bestselling cook book before the TV show, and her cook book had a personal and unique take as it was posed as How to Eat rather than how to cook and portrayed a believable description of what Nigella actually cooked for her family and enjoyed eating.

Her TV persona also was very self-aware and slightly self-deprecating in playing up the twinkly lights and innuendo, so she just about got away with her London privileged life.

Even that was just about attainable for many of us, who knocked through our dining rooms and put up fairy lights for 'kitchen suppers'.

M has no establishment as a cook or a host, in fact she seems the opposite and quite isolated. She also has zero self-awareness or self-deprecation, although he trailer seems to be suggesting they are trying to introduce this.

And a Montecito estate and orchard is not going to be attainable for any of us, even if we try to grow a lemon tree in our conservatory.

Nigella would never have suggested putting flowers in ice cubes without a whole nod of self-deprecation about how she knew this was actually quite wanky.

Nigella is very British.

M is very American.

itsstillmehere · 03/01/2025 13:31

@Spectre8 you cannot seriously mention Squid Games in the same sentence as this 😂 . Squid Games does not need any promotion.

Where is the racist element in these?

Does it honestly honestly not occur to you that these sort of criticisms that were levelled at Meghan, whilst applauding Kate for the same thing.. might not have a racist element to it?

Why otherwise?

Let's take just one....

"Kate's morning sickness cure. An avocado gifted to William for pregnant Kate"

"Meghan's avocados linked to human rights abuse and drought. Meghan wolfing down a fruit linked to water shortages, illegal deforestation and all round general environmental devastation"

Do you not find that odd? And that's just one out of very very many.

Yes, and all the 'just use water from the kettle' and stories about her raiding the fridge in her dressing gown when she got a sudden urge for chocolate cake in the middle of the night. All to make this incredibly privileged, elite, gorgeous, Oxford educated woman somehow seem 'relatable'. And it kind of worked.

But Meghan lacks the ability to laugh at herself, or even be aware of the impression she is making. So this looks like a cringe fest in the making. Maybe there's an audience for it, but to me it looks like the type of thing you'd have seen a good 10 or 15 years ago. Viewers are a lot more cynical these days.

StrawberryWasp · 03/01/2025 13:37

It would be interesting and 'authentic' if she had Jessica Mulrony on.
Her old friend, who is/ was? a fashion lifestyle type person.

They could chat about how they manage life with small children, what they cook for ther families, how they rum the home etc.

But she seesm to have dispapeared...

It'll be intersting to see who actually appears, if there is anyone who is a long standing friend.

This has brightened my New Year. A January of H&M analysis will help make my life full of wonder and appreciation of joy 😁.

She had also gained public sympathy following the death of her husband and has spoken of his cooking and family (and cooking for family) got her through. Her food journalism got her to cookbooks, which led to the telly. She became the slightly naughty domestic goddess, who loved food and could do (jazzed up) home cooking up really well.

It felt like a consistent step, based on what the public already knew of her. It took years to build up. She presented well and the recipes were appealing, well described and easy enough to follow.

This is a read, 😱a Canadian politician takes to her substack, with commentary on the trailer.

https://michellerempelgarner.substack.com/p/were-not-reading-the-room-with-love

the Duchess of Sussex desperately needed a public perception makeover. That's because her biggest claim to fame in recent memory was not for accomplishing anything remarkable in the philanthropic or public policy arenas.
Rather, it was for her and her husband taking a wildly explosive and highly public, nuclear-grade shit on members of her husband's immediate family, apparently in a bid to land things like their lucrative deal with Netflix.

While they’ve had their defenders, the fact remains that the Duchess and her husband faced much anger from around the globe. With a few years now settled between those events and the present, her public relations team has been hinting at a new image launch for months now, starting with the soft launch of a luxury brand of jams and other pantry goods.

The era of the new, forgiving, down-to-earth Meghan was to be upon us.
But this morning, after the Netflix trailer for her show was released, I had several apolitical friends forward it to me, accompanied by reactions that ranged from "LOL" to "insufferable" to "barf." After watching it myself, it seems that the disdain for the trailer for the Duchess’s new show is rooted in the show’s premise being simultaneously hypocritical, preposterous, and infuriatingly condescending.

Edited

I think there is a lot of truth in this.

Celebrities as influencers has peaked and turned on them. See the USA election result as evidence. All the celebs supported one candidate, they really believed they could influence the general population, buut the resposne was why should we care about you?

In fact it was worse than just ignoring them, there is anger towards this elite Hollywood crowd who think they can lord it over normal people. People have hhad enough,we weren't as stupid as everyone imagined. We were up for a bit of escapism but we're not total idiots.

I think she's missed the boat on the window for seling celebs as aspirational.

567 Comments about Meghan, some rather spiteful and personal about her. I made a post asking if William & Rose rumours are true and a select few had a meltdown and reported the post!

Spectre8 · 03/01/2025 14:01

Bachboo · 03/01/2025 13:14

But you are clearly a super fan

How do you knownso clearly let's see your justification? What defines me a superfan?

Would you agree that a superfan would be following all her social media accounts? ...because I don't but you would expect anyone who is fab of a person to at least be following one if not all.

Would you agree a superfan would go and see the person and queue up to do so..so when she was in the UK a superfan would be going to see her when they did their walks and events....I have done none of that

Reetpetitenot · 03/01/2025 14:06

They're not true, the perpetrator of the rumour has admitted as much, and the rumours weirdly started after Harry sat next to Rose at a dinner to which Meghan was not invited. Your post was completely irrelevant to this thread.

Igavebirthtoabanana · 03/01/2025 14:10

Nigella has had a privileged life but she has also been through several personal tragedies (her DH, DM and DSis all dying from cancer at young age). And because she comes across as a warm, genuine person, she has had a lot of good will going her way.

Forgot to say, just Google 'celebrity bump cradling'!

I just did and I only found one other photo of someone with the above-and-below bump cradle which was someone called Keke Palmer (I've not heard of her but it sounds like she's quite well known) in January 2023 - so maybe a "sweet nod" to Meghan.
Sienna Miller has quite an odd picture, showing her clutching her bump at both sides and looking like she's going to shoot someone with it.
I got bored after a while so possibly stopped just before the massive amount of pictures of over-and-under bump clutchers.

queenofarles · 03/01/2025 14:13

it’s putting shade and pitting the two against each other , it’s been going on for years , Sarah was frumpy and messy , Diana was elegant and charming. Sara’s affair was splashed all over the papers within minutes , it was In the evening papers the same day , still remember buying one for my Aunt to read!
, Diana’s affairs were not circulated that quick , not till all those phone calls tapes were leaked 😣.

And I think any Netflix series filmed with the 'joy' of a Kamala Harris victory in mind is going to feel discordant throughout. More unlucky timing, among many unlucky timings.

There isn't a massive amount, a few though when I googled. There is plenty of stuff that Meghan did that I'm not a fan of, but I think the negativity around bump clutching was unfair. That was the point I was making.
