Not only have we all over consumed cooking shows the last 25 years, but the world is changing.

Many get their recipes from SM and new formats like the Waitrose podcast are getting people interested.

This over stylised format seems old fashioned. Particularly because it’s not in her own home, so it’s literally staged. Will always feel fake.

Everything today is supposed to be about authenticity…but when you hear at the end of the video that with the dog snoring, ‘it’s going to be a peaceful day’ …you just think too right it will, you don’t have two kids running about at home because your filming in someone else’s family home!

Edited

Seems strange to take your dog to someone else’s home for a cooking show. I wonder if she was still pretending it was her home (before we knew it wasn’t)?

The double bump cradling is a really common pose in Hollywood, actresses do it on the red carpet all the time. I always thought they did it to make it clear they were still thin even with a bump. Which is a sad indictment on the Hollywood insistence on thinness.

So I don't think it strange that Meghan did that. It's what she is used to. Different cultural norms are just that, different.

Serenster · 03/01/2025 11:52

Nigella (who only filmed her first series, Nigella Bites, in her own house) is very open about filming in a studio, but also says she essentially transports all her own kitchen equipment there for filming, as she prefers to work with her own things, and all her kitchen clutter around her. Which makes sense - I don’t know Nigella personally, obviously, but I do believe that what she cooks on her shows and puts in her books are things she genuinely makes herself. And as someone who cooks a lot myself, I get annoyed cooking in a holiday rental kitchen - I want my own things! (I genuinely take my own knives with me if we are driving somewhere). I also take my dog with me on holiday, obviously too, but taking it along as a prop for filming is quite funny. Meghan’s dog is obviously a lot calmer than mine!

So I don’t think it’s strange to hire or use another kitchen for filming - Richard Osman spoke about this in his podcast a couple of weeks ago - he made the point that you need a lot of space for a film crew and if you have a normal-sized kitchen, that’s a lot of inconvenience and bother. If you have a big house in the country - he specifically mentioned Mary Berry, and there was another tv chef he mentioned too - then you probably can film there more easily, and they apparently do.

I can also perfectly see that apart from the inconvenience you may not want to film in your own kitchen because it’s not the right aesthetic. Meghan’s trailer certainly looks focussed on using fresh ingredients from the garden (and apiary?) and so a light, airy kitchen with indoor-outdoor flow suits that vibe very well. From pictures we’ve seen, including her ARO reel, her own kitchen is darker - more Italian earthenware tiles and small windows and not so open to the garden.

Serenster · 03/01/2025 12:00

On the aesthetic point, here’s a photo of Meghan’s actual kitchen (from the estate agent listing before they bought the house) and the blurry picture is taken from the instagram reel Meghan posted on the ARO site. The third photo is the kitchen she used for filming. As you can see, they are very different in decor, colours, light, style etc. I can completely see she felt the rented kitchen was better suited to the style of her show (and I think that’s absolutely fine!

(Amusingly, she looks like she’s wearing the same outfit in both cooking shots, though - she had her personal style for cooking sorted, it seems)

The trailer looks good actually but there is an outdated element to it , like something Ina did 20 years ago in the Hamptons , all white shaker kitchen , peonies and hydrangeas.

The styling looks like it was heavily influenced by Nancy Meyers.

maybe it was filmed very quick ? It’s only that polo players wife, mindi , her friend what’s her name ? And the bookstore lady.

Oh dear, I am sadly outdated then because I am lusting over that kitchen! 🤣

No the trialer looks trash and Netflix knows it just check the likes and dislikes. Why else would they leave comments open they know exactly why it would get trashed gived them a perfect cause to drop the grifters.

In reality no one is going to be watching for the cooking, they're going to watch to see how M comes across. Some will love the glossy image she is projecting others will see it as fake.

I think there would have been even more interest if she'd used her own house. I might even have wtached then, becuase I am very nosey and more interested in houses than cooking.

It wuld also have fitted with the whole 'lifestyle' claim of the show. It's not just cooking it's selling a lifestyle, which isn't real. If she'd used her own terrace for tea, vegetable plot for fresh veggies and talked about what she makes for kids tea/ weekday supper with Harry/ sunday afternoon in the Cali sun, it wuold have felt much more 'authentic' and aspirational

That's the problem she has she wants to be 'authentic' and 'aspirational' it's hard to pull both off simulataneously without looking too try hard.

StrawberryWasp · 03/01/2025 12:20

I'm glad it's coming out though, it continues the M&H soap opera for a while longer which is the best entertainment around.

I’ve never seen another US actress do that though.

I've seen several, Demi Moore started it with her naked pregnant cover.

Forgot to say, just Google 'celebrity bump cradling'!

queenofarles · 03/01/2025 12:31

oh it’s still good serenster 😂,
the countertop is not something I’d choose. I love kitchens that don’t entirely match , mix of different wood and colour makes it looks less Display kitchen and more homey.

You don't understand why it's racist to criticise things that a non white woman does but not to criticise the white woman for the very same thing?

I recommend you read Why I No Longer Talk to White People About Race.

Well said. If you don't recognise it, you're part of the problem.

Nigella is a professional cook/chef with years of experience, she's hardly a posh lady playing at it. Meghan on the other hand seems to think she can be a chef, writer, activist, influencer and whatever else she fancies without any qualification or much effort. As someone else said it's no different to the Love Island/reality TV lot.

When Nigella published her first cookery book, she was a successful journalist. She then made her first TV series due to its success. She came from a journalism background; she wasn't a chef like Jamie Oliver or Gordon Ramsay.
I also remember Sophie Dahl's cookery series which was about 15 years ago. She was a former model turned author/journalist. She wasn't a chef or professional cook.

Population of 68m so, yeah, I would say so.

Sorry, it would appear it's not a slam-dunk.

Nigella's journalism involved being a restaurant critic, so she did have some relevant background. And she quickly showed solid culinary credentials, which she has built up over years.

Sophie Dahl's cookery career never really took off. And it was, as you say, about 15 years ago. I don't think the public is as open to listening to people just because they are 'celebrities' as they used to be. Which I consider to be a good thing.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 03/01/2025 12:48

Nigella also had a cookery column in British Vogue.

This is a read, 😱a Canadian politician takes to her substack, with commentary on the trailer.

https://michellerempelgarner.substack.com/p/were-not-reading-the-room-with-love

the Duchess of Sussex desperately needed a public perception makeover. That's because her biggest claim to fame in recent memory was not for accomplishing anything remarkable in the philanthropic or public policy arenas.
Rather, it was for her and her husband taking a wildly explosive and highly public, nuclear-grade shit on members of her husband's immediate family, apparently in a bid to land things like their lucrative deal with Netflix.

While they’ve had their defenders, the fact remains that the Duchess and her husband faced much anger from around the globe. With a few years now settled between those events and the present, her public relations team has been hinting at a new image launch for months now, starting with the soft launch of a luxury brand of jams and other pantry goods.

The era of the new, forgiving, down-to-earth Meghan was to be upon us.
But this morning, after the Netflix trailer for her show was released, I had several apolitical friends forward it to me, accompanied by reactions that ranged from "LOL" to "insufferable" to "barf." After watching it myself, it seems that the disdain for the trailer for the Duchess’s new show is rooted in the show’s premise being simultaneously hypocritical, preposterous, and infuriatingly condescending.

I don't see any forum rules saying you need to make some sort of statement about someone so you aren't seen as suspicious.

There is no perfect person although lots of peolle strive to be. Everyone has their own flaws. I don't feel I need to go round pointing out people's flaws, whether its in real life or on a forum unless the person is directly asking me a question or for advice.

By saying you find people suspicious for not admitting someon has flaws or saying anything to thay effect.. what is this school? If you don't do it you don't fit in and you'll be labelled a superfan.

But you are clearly a super fan

Criticism for eating avocados
Wearing one shouldered dress
Cradling her bump
Wearing nail varnish

All of these were things that Kate did (not sure if she eats avocados tbf) but only the non white woman was criticised for it.

Where is the racist element in these?
