Do you think as Camilla as the queen ?

Hear me out , I have no problem with Camilla and never thought I would never see her as ( way back when ) as Charles wife when they married , my opinion, was they married and can rightly call herself as Duchess.
However , what I don't understand that when Queen Elizabeth was alive , her husband , Prince Phillip was always known as just that and never seen / addressed as King . Why is Camilla our queen when Phillip was never our king ? I'm confused .

@WearyAuldWumman

The wife of the King is the Queen and that's that.

It's why Wallis Simpson was not allowed to marry Edward VIII - because there was no realistic way of them marrying and her not being called Queen.

All the talk when Camilla and Charles married, of Camilla not being able to become Queen were a mere smokescreen. The alternatives suggested eg she would remain the Duchess of Cornwall or would possibly be styled - at a pinch - as Queen Consort were pointless nonsense to anyone who knows the first thing about how these titles work.

I still think of her as the Royal Bidie-In. (Only folk of a certain generation who live in certain parts of Scotland will get that, I imagine.)

It's hardly an uncrackable code.

Very glad to hear it.

Anyone else find a post with ‘hear me out’ really irritating?

Just me? Fair enough. I have had wine and am possibly grumpy.

JaneJeffer · 09/11/2024 21:04

I think of her as your queen

Oh, I'm aware of how it works and I recall that when the "Princess Consort" announcement was made, various commentators pointed out the actuality.

The fact of the matter is that Camilla's perceived unpopularity at the time was the reason for the original announcement.

CaspersMum24 · 09/11/2024 21:05

No.

SnuffleTruffleHound · 09/11/2024 21:05

Nope. I’m not a royalist in any way. When someone says queen I just think of Queen elizabeth II. It takes me ages to figure out they mean Camilla.

OppsUpsSide · 09/11/2024 21:05

No I don’t think of her as Queen in the same way as the late Queen, largely because she isn’t Queen in the same way as the late Queen. I do like her though.

tinytemper66 · 09/11/2024 21:11

It really. I have more issues with them charging NHS and RNLI money and then also getting taxpayers
Money!

@upinaballoon you are correct. And that's why she's not called Princess Catherine. Because she isn't a princess by birth.

Edited

That did not stop the press coining the name Princess Diana. Which was technically incorrect, but there's no telling some people, they won't have it.

The same people also won't have it that technically Camilla was the last Princess of Wales.

JazzyJelly · 09/11/2024 21:14

Nah, Elizabeth II is and always will be THE queen to me. Just because she held the role for so long.

meercat23 · 09/11/2024 21:15

As others have said, when I hear 'The Queen' I think of the late queen. When I hear 'Prince of Wales' I think Charles.

I don't have a problem with Camilla now, she has worked hard to make things work but old habits die hard and I still think of the Late Queen when anyone refers to The Queen.

Not to be too morbid, if Camilla outlives her husband, what would her title be. She couldn't be Queen Mother so what would she be?

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 09/11/2024 21:17

She would just be Queen Camilla. Queen Mother was used because otherwise it would have been awkward to distinguish between the two Queen Elizabeths.

LindorDoubleChoc · 09/11/2024 21:17

Not really, just as I never thought of Philip as the King. There is one monarch at a time and their spouse is not the monarch.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 09/11/2024 21:19

Philip wasn't King though! Whereas every Queen before Camilla was Queen! Arghhhhhh I need to go have a cup of tea! 😄😄

Queen Camilla. Like Queen Mary remained Queen Mary after her husband George v died. The only reason that Geroge vi’s Queen was know as the “Queen Mother” was to distinguish her from her daughter. Otherwise there would have been two living Queen Elizabeths

Saschka · 09/11/2024 21:19

I have trouble enough remembering that Prince Charles is King, let alone remembering Camilla is now Queen.

LindorDoubleChoc · 09/11/2024 21:20

So - if anyone can explain - why is she described as Queen Camilla or the Queen (I've just heard a radio report describing her thus) when Philip was never King Philip?

Lots of posts have already explained this. King outranks Queen so the husband of a reigning Queen is never the King. See also Queen Victoria and Prince Albert

That makes sense. Thank you.

Needmorelego · 09/11/2024 21:24

@LindorDoubleChoc King outranks Queen.
If the monarch who inherits the crown is female (Like Elizabeth II and Victoria) they are Queen but at the top. No one can out rank them - so their husbands are Prince.
If it's a male who inherits they are King but their wife is Queen because as said - King out ranks Queen.

The titles of women do not confer courtesy titles on their husbands whatever the rank.
It only works the other way round. The title of the man confers a courtesy title on his wife

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 09/11/2024 21:25

It's not a big deal, really, and I suppose those of who have more of an interest in these things are going to see it as common knowledge when actually it clearly isn't for a lot of people. But it does make my head hurt if I have to explain it too many times in one thread, heh.
