Meghan’s Midas Touch

So Clare Keller who once designed for the likes of Gucci, Chloe, Givenchy is now at Uniqlo.

NYT has done an article on Clare, where Clare tries to make out that Clare wanted her stint at Givenchy to be a short one …sure Clare

Meghan has emailed in to say she got a few items from Clare’s Uniqlo collection. Bet she’s gutted she can’t get the designer togs anymore! But my god…Meghans hardly the person to call upon as a fashion ambassador.

But I’m thinking, 2017- April 2020, when she left Givenchy. Is a very short time for a head at an atelier. So it looks obvious she was let go or was ‘mutually agreed’ as the Sussex’s like to say.

But could it be, that her stand out garment from her time there, Meghans wedding dress, was her downfall?

Im sure on paper the dress looked gorgeous. Simple, elegant, clean lines. But with the bespoke duchess satin used, which was incredibly thick - it didnt lend itself to elegant sleeves or a fine fit. We also know from the flower girl dresses it was a rush job. Charlottes dress was shocking, with a hanging hemline etc.

The fit of some of the flower girl dresses and Meghan dress didn’t look good. This must have reflected on Givenchy and Clare. I’m guessing that’s why she left so soon with no job to go to and now is at a fast fashion label!

Her Trajectory seems the same as Meghans. Duchess to D list. Givenchy to Uniqlo.

So why on earth she got Meghan to write an email talking her up I don’t know. Working with her seems like the kiss of death!

Givenchy didn't 'allow that [the bridesmaids' dresses] to leave their workshop'. The dresses we saw were quickly made by a London tailor because the Givenchy ones were unworkable.

In her early days Kate wore some very short dresses , her Canada tour wardrobe was a total disaster , a few months later it was reported that the Queen had a word with her about the need to have her hems longer and weighted , she must have taken her advice to heart , her wardrobe changed on the Asian tour and beyond.

I can’t imagine Meghan and Harry taking such advice without spinning it into something that is not., hate, jealousy , racism..

megan wears very expensive clothes and has good taste but it’s obvious none of it gets altered to fit her and it ends up looking ill fitting.
all she needs is a good seamstress really! .

theemptinessmachine · 22/10/2024 13:23

I think Uniqlo is the equivalent of designers such as Vera Wang having clothing in kohls in the USA. From Tom Ford to Uniqlo? 😬

theemptinessmachine · 22/10/2024 13:33

I liked the simplicity of Meghan's dress but didn't like how it looked at the bottom - sort of folded over. Messy.

I don't get the love for Eugenie's dress. I hated the shawl collar. Very dowdy.

I hadn't noticed the hem before, I wonder if it was design feature. I would expect it to look sharper but I'm not a fashionista!

Unlike most it seems I liked Catherine's dress. It was a good classic shape and didn't have a ridiculously enormous train like Diana's.

theemptinessmachine · 22/10/2024 13:49

I liked Catherine's dress. It was appropriate for the occasion and will stand the test of time. She looked so happy as well.

As far as Meghan’s wedding dress is concerned , I think Katy Perry voiced the views of many - it needed one more fitting . And Charlotte’s was a mess .
Not the best advert for Givenchy .

Yes - I'm not very pernickity about these things but even I agreed with Catherine that poor Charlotte's dress was ill-fitting. It must have been a huge disappointment to the child. They would honestly have done better to run to a shop and grab one off the peg!

Meghan wasted a huge amount of money on her Givenchy dream at that wedding. But that's OK - someone else was paying (er...us).

Lifestooshort71 · 22/10/2024 14:05

Perhaps MM wanted a longer length dress (like all her trousers) but found it impossible to walk in so a shorter hem was tacked up last minute?

Anyway, it wasn’t the real wedding so it didn’t matter.

Ah - I honestly didn't know that so thanks for the clarification Not2identifying

Not sure it makes the whole picture much better, though, since if Givenchy didn't have folk skilled in making children's wear why wouldn't they have directed the bride elsewhere in the first place?

As said however there's probably much we'll never know

Not2identifying · 22/10/2024 14:21

Agreed, if anything that makes Givenchy look worse. We know about the London tailor because he gave an interview to the one of the papers (probably the DM), I think it was after Spare came out.

BemusedAmerican · 22/10/2024 14:30

Uniqlo is not widespread in the US. It looks from the article that they are planning a big US expansion. I don't wear Uniqlo as I find the cut seems to be for less curvy people.

theemptinessmachine · 22/10/2024 14:38

Yes @Catgotthecreamandthesalmon 😂😂😂

Not2identifying · 22/10/2024 14:51

Thanks @BemusedAmerican

AuroraCake · 22/10/2024 16:21

They altered the dresses. They did not make them.

ThePoshUns · 22/10/2024 17:08

I think k the original dresses had to be taken apart and remade.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 22/10/2024 18:34

You see, what was needed there was someone with a freakish eye for detail.

I loved Kate and Eugenie's dresses. They both had that perfect couture precision in the fitting and the folds. Alexander McQueen always specialised in that: folding fabric into a structure so perfect you can't quite imagine how they get fabric to do that.

Kate's dress was almost molded into her body and the skirt folds were sumptuous.

Eugenie's collar and folds at the back were exquisite.

Beatrice's dress was pretty and sentimental but slightly awkward, which gave it some charm.

Megan's dress was a great concept badly executed. The fabric was too thick for the design and prevented the perfection of lines needed to carry off such simplicity. The fit was poor, maybe again due to the fabric but also I think it wasn't a flattering shape for M anyway. She has quite a 'straight' figure and a more structured dress would have provided shape to her body.

As an aside I also loved Eugenie's evening dress which I know many others didn't. I thought it was beautiful. Again creating: how do they get fabric to do that?? Moment.

Megan's evening dress looked amazing. It was the whole thing: her hair, Diana's ring, the car, Windsor, looking so happy, it was a beautiful moment and the perfect dress for it.

Children's Bridesmaids dresses all look the same to me.

Might as well just buy them in BHS like we used to!

Debenhams always did lovely flower girl dresses.

Even when they have uneven hems ?

AuroraCake · 22/10/2024 21:13

They should have just bought them from a specialist company and be done.
