Catherine's new eternity ring

Hello

Delighted to see Catherine has finished chemo and starting to go back to work. <3 So is it ok to have a "fun" thread again about her style?

In today's video I noticed this is the 2nd time she's been wearing this "new" sapphire and diamond eternity ring. Looking at the picture of her hand in the wheatfield, it looks to me like it simply replaces the Diana engagement ring. So she still wears her wedding band in its normal place, ie closest to the knuckle, then this new ring, then her original eternity ring that I think she got when Prince George was born.

The pic of her in the stripy top taken a couple of weeks ago - it looks like a gold wedding band top AND bottom with the orig and new eternity rings in the middle. So a stack of FOUR rather than three? Can't see it clearly - any thoughts?

Do we think she got the new eternity ring for their 10 yr anniversary 3 years ago? Or is it a more recent purchase?

Also added a picture of her original stack from just after Prince George was born.

A male friend of mine thinks blokes should get an engagement watch!

Some do.

Mine did

I got DH an engagement present after he proposed. I actually thought that was usual. This was in the late 80s though so customs may have been different.
We gave each other wedding presents too.

I have always wondered how she feels about it. It is such an iconic ring with such a sad history. I have no doubt PW thought it was a huge honour for her to have his mother's ring, but it came with serious baggage.

My engagement ring is antique. But we bought it (and my eternity ring) from an estate auction and I did not know the history. So I can enjoy my rings as being beautiful- and I hope that their original owners know how much I love them. But it helps to not know their original owners history (history writ large in the case of Princess Diana!) so i can imagine they have no negative connotations and that someone up there is benevolently smiling upon me and busily being happy that their ring lives on in my own happy marriage.

If any of that makes sense. (I am quite a superstitious person generally it has to be said).

Yes, and didn't Harry inherit it and give it to her, which is quite sweet. It's probably quite a burden if she doesn't like it as it probably means alot to W&H. I would feel the ring was cursed!

I saw Diana's wedding dress in Kensington 3 years ago.

It's much nicer in real life. Nicer colour and more delicate. Lovely sparkles.

You could be right and the e-ring is nicer in real life.

I went to that exhibition. I thought Diana's dress was exquisite close up. The fabric is beautiful too. In many ways, it's much less fussy than the modern dresses you see on Say Yes to the Dress.

JADS · 12/09/2024 09:21

The problem with Diana's dress was that it didn't suit her. The dress looked like it was wearing her. She developed her style later.

It was the 80s, nothing suited any of us 😉

I agree. It was far too voluminous and the fabric, although lovely, creased too much because it was crammed in to the coach. On the other hand, the Duchess of York’s wedding dress suited her really well. That was an 80’s wedding too so I don’t think we can just blame the fashion of the day for Diana’s wardrobe fail 😆

I blame the DoY for the fact that I got married with an enormous bow slapped on my rear end Blush

This is true - brown velour trousers, Laura Ashley and Cloth kits was my style 😂

Sarah's dress was lovely. The peachy colour was really beautiful. The York tiara was gorgeous too.

Bows are a massive bridal trend this year, so maybe she wasn't completely wrong.

HappyDane · 12/09/2024 10:07

I agree Sarah really did look great on her wedding day.

Uricon2 · 12/09/2024 12:33

I gave first DH a signet ring when we got engaged, he wore it on his right hand after we got married. Second DH wanted to wear his own father's signet ring as a wedding ring so £££ saved there.

Oh Fergie and her blessed bows! They were everywhere for a bit as I remember (I may have succumbed to the odd hair accessory myself)

She probably has a few different rings to wear on different occasions, no?

tbf I think that about a lot of the bods I see around today but they like it.

Who wouldn't want to look like Claire Grogan or Strawberry Switchblade😂

Yes, I have always thought that very curvy Fergie looked very good in her dress.

I've seen one or two of Diana's clothes up close in an exhibition, but never the wedding dress.

JSMill · 13/09/2024 13:09

I saw Diana's wedding dress at an exhibition at KP a few years ago. My main impression was how heavy it looked. It was, of course, extremely beautiful. I actually think Fergie was the more beautiful bride out of the two. Diana was obviously like a fairytale princess but Sarah somehow managed to look very elegant but also natural. Beatrice was a lovely bride for the same reasons. There's nothing nicer than a bride and groom who are both beaming on their wedding day. I remember a friend of ours spent thousands on her dress and spent all day looking miserable because she had stressed herself out.
I also saw an exhibition of some of Diana's dresses at KP in 2018. It was fascinating to see such iconic items up close. Interestingly my 10 year old daughter was annoyed I didn't take her. Even the younger generations are fascinated by her.

GapTshirtsAreShitQualityTheseDays · 13/09/2024 13:47

I stood next to a Diana doll at Madame Tussauds. She was TALL!

I saw an exhibition of her dresses at KP in around 2005, dresses in cases with film of her wearing them playing beside. I was very struck how many women of Diana's generation were there (me included) and although it was very quiet, people were catching each others eyes and there was a sort of recognition, shared feeling.

@JSMill totally agree, I thought Fergie looked great and seemed so happy. I loved Beatrice and Eugenies weddings too (Eugenie's dress/look is my all time favourite)

I remember watching her get out of the carriage and the first thing my mum commented on was how creased it was. I didn't like it then and I still don't. It was too big and they'd thrown everything at it, bows, bling, ruffles and a ridiculously long train that wasn't in proportion even to the enormous skirt.

The Spencer tiara was nice.

One of the unsolved mysteries of the universe is why the Emmanuels still had a fashion career afterwards.

Chrishelle · 13/09/2024 15:37

If I were Catherine I'd want my own engagement ring not my dead mother in laws. Maybe she's now just got one she actually chose?

BreadInCaptivity · 13/09/2024 18:40

I think I read somewhere (so may be wrong and have no source) that W and H did a deal that whomever got engaged first would get "the ring".

I'm sure W thought this was a great honour for C. Maybe she did at the time.

But despite the fact it's famous it's a bloody impractical and imho ugly piece of jewellery.

Not one I'd want to wear ever never mind day to day.

It's not surprising that C only wears it on occasion.

I think the gesture was probably well meant but my guess (only based on my own experiences of inherited jewellery) is that C would have probably preferred an engagement ring of her own.

H's wife on the other hand (pun intended) I suspect may have felt very differently...

GapTshirtsAreShitQualityTheseDays · 13/09/2024 22:26

If Meghan had got the Diana ring, she'd probably have been pretty torn. She'd like the kudos but would have hated the ring itself. She probably would have remodelled/upgraded it like she did with the ring Harry DID give her!

Catherine accepted the ring graciously and wears it proudly. Albeit I do think she would have preferred something more elegant. Her wedding dress was very elegant.
