She has released a video to state that she has completed her cancer treatment.

There was a very long gap after that second statement. And then the heavily photoshopped picture.

If it was an attempt to protect their children, I think it wasn't the right move. An earlier announcement would have stopped the rumours which I am sure were a lot more damaging to their children

Can you provide a source/evidence please for the statement "heavily photoshopped"?

BishyBarnyBee · 10/09/2024 16:54

ArabellaScott · 09/09/2024 17:57

Do not climb on timber stacks, ffs!

Ha ha, that was my first reaction too! A health and safety nightmare. I was really shocked it was allowed, but then realised we have spent a lot of time in woodland in Europe with very graphic warning signs telling you not to do it.

I don't know if anyone actually gets injured in reality, but those signs made it look like you'd 100% lose any child who ventured onto the stack.

Autumnismyfavouritetimeofyear · 10/09/2024 17:28

Very OTT and paving the way for her to do far less in future.

Seems insensitive when many people don't have the same access to healthcare or unlimited access to a private estate including beach and woodlands in which to recuperate in nature.

Oh but ... I can't go on that beach .... 🙄

lemonstolemonade · 10/09/2024 17:29

@MrsFinkelstein

Is it really the case that the NHS will pay people full pay for up to a year if they are ill? That sounds amazing, far better than the perks I get in my private sector role!

They specifically said that she wouldn't be in public until Easter, and that no updates would be given unless circumstances changed.

The deliberate frenzy & bullying online started in February. Well before Easter.

It wouldn't have mattered whether they had released more statements. The harassment campaign would and did happen regardless.

In fact you can. It’s Holkham beach. It may be privately owned (not by any of the Royals) but it’s open to the public. I’ve been on it and swum from it many times.

Full pay for 6m, then half pay for the next 6m (can also claim SSP). When my husband worked for local authority his sick leave was the same.

Obviously, the PoW doesn't get paid as she receives funding from the Duchy of Cornwall.

MrsLeonFarrell · 10/09/2024 17:34

So to summarise:

Catherine was wrong to release an initial statement because it wasn't detailed enough.

She was wrong to release a video because she should have just produced a statement.

She is wrong to take her children to the beach and play in the woods because not everyone has access to the beach or the woods.

She is wrong to talk about her experience of cancer because she has money.

She should be working with cancer charities already because she has experience of cancer and can help people by talking about it.

It's fine to be critical because she is royal and should do everything the way people want her to at all times, even though no one agrees on what she should do.

But above all let's forget that social media and forums were happy to circulate vile lies about her and her family because it created clicks. After all she is royal so is fair game and her children wouldn't affected if she had just done everything perfectly (see above).

thecrossiamwearing · 10/09/2024 17:37

@AppleDumplingWithCustard I know that. I was continuing with the theme of " I wish her well BUT....."

MrsFinkelstein · 10/09/2024 17:37

@MrsLeonFarrell pretty much.

As someone who has gone through treatment for cancer I find it depressing that so many people are criticising the mother of young children for taking substantial time out to concentrate on recovering and supporting her children . Just because she has money and staff won’t make the situation any easier . I was terrified . The minute I walked into the consultant’s office and saw the McMillan Nurse I knew what I was going to be told .
Explaining to my DC and DGC was awful . In fact worse than being told myself .

MrsLeonFarrell · 10/09/2024 17:42

MrsFinkelstein · 10/09/2024 17:37

@MrsLeonFarrell pretty much.

I know that most of this is driven by the people who have scripts (shall we say), but I find it depressing that so many want to have a go at a woman with a young family who is facing cancer. She can't help who she married.

I don't have her money, I have been alongside someone who faced cancer and who didn't survive. I am happy that she is cancer free and I hope she stays that way, which is what I hope for anyone facing life threatening disease and the thought of leaving their children.

I'd rather campaign for everyone to have better healthcare than begrudge someone who had has successful treatment.

MrsMoastyToasty · 10/09/2024 17:43

@DillDanding I totally misread your post about the King! THAT would have been a very different type of film..

I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. And I completely agree that nothing material makes facing it easier.

Everyone in the UK is within 60 miles of the coast and there’s plenty of woodland/parks all over the country. This isn’t unique to the royals. And most people do have access to healthcare in the UK. What a strange thing to complain about.

Serenster · 10/09/2024 17:48

I love Marina Hyde - such an intelligent woman and a good writer. I agree with her - ideally Kate’s announcement early this year that she was seriously ill should have been all that needed to be said. Patently, it wasn’t though.

I do wonder however whether this is an example of trying to “reclaim he narrative” as Marina suggests, or something slightly different? I don’t imagine Kate and William are naive enough to think they can stop the conspiracy theorists and convert the haters. I do think they think long term not short term, however. So this could be someone in a very public role, who knows that her life will be remembered by history, no matter whether long or short, wanting to put something out there to record a primary source for the history that she wants to be told about herself.

So much bitterness and hatred on here - so much rabid noise from bitter sad people.

Plus the places they go in Norfolk are open to the public.

Another way to look at it would so ‘So much forelock-tugging and toadyism’.

Er, my bit of the West Midlands is approx 95 miles from the coast (Clevedon, north of Weston-Super-Mare). Weston is about 110 miles. I’ve been to Weston and it’s rathr muddy beach. Not been to Clevedon but I understand it’s basically Bristol Channel/Severn estuary.
I wish we had the sea on our doorstep.

thecrossiamwearing · 10/09/2024 17:58

@AtYourOwnRisk I don't consider altruism to be described as any of those words you use.

I don't think it's an attempt to reclaim the narrative, I'm pretty sure they know that isn't possible, neither do I think it's anything to do with Meghan. I believe that Catherine wanted to speak for herself and give the public a little glimpse of her and the family, not exactly off duty because they were being filmed, but doing things they do together when they are off duty. A fabricated truth if you like. She seems genuinely grateful for the support and letters they have received and she has chosen to give thoughtful reply and update on a way she chose.

It's not relevant to quote Hillary Mantel, she may have only written her essay in 2013 but the social media world is very different. Many non royal people do colour coordinate photos, take videos and edit them for social media etc and we have influencers now. I find the style of the video fits very well into this new reality.

I also think it's an indication that Catherine is deciding to do things her way regardless of media response. Maybe the lies earlier in the year taught her that she can't win whatever she does so she may as well present herself in a way she is happy with.
