Meghans trademark not allowed

The patent office apparently has turned down the trademark of Meghans new jam making business American Riviera Orchard on the grounds that you can't trademark geographical locations. You would have thought somebody would have picked up on this before now.

I have to say H&M have taught me a lot about all sorts of random things - trademarks, letters patent, the history of various newspapers, the origins of Goop, KFC, the tensile strength of dog bowls...

Every day is a school day with those two!

Maybe they should pitch to Cbeebies 😂

Ah ok. I just thought of another problem with MOOR. The Moors were conquerors of Spain. RooM sounds good but must be taken. And this is why people are paid serious money to come up with brand names.

Just thought of one to appeal to the US market due to pronunciation. DooK.

Now DooK is very good but people will think of Harry, which won’t be to her liking.

Americanpseudoroyaltorture · 05/09/2024 10:26

smilesy · 05/09/2024 08:07

Only slight problem is that her name is Rachel Meghan. Although RooM would be quite good if it hasn’t been used by anyone else 🤷‍♀️

Isn't Room the name of a best selling book about someone held captive for years? I mean, it might be apt in some ways....

MummyJ12 · 05/09/2024 10:29

I didn’t realise that all is not well with Lemonada Media? Apparently they are actively trying to find a buyer but it seems that they are wanting this kept under the radar.
Have they been Markled?!

Uricon2 · 05/09/2024 08:26

I thought this was a really good solution @Thedom but then Google informs me that Aro can be variously

  • a UK credit broker
  • a subgroup of the Nigerian Igbo people
  • those who are a-romantic
  • one of the leaders of the Volturi, the dominant vampire coven in Twilight

I'm sure this is far from an exhaustive list Grin

Tricky this name thing, isn't it?

LOL, that knocks ARO out of the water then, unless she would like to capitalise on her newfound Nigerian princessdom. I am sure she knows a few Nigerian kings who she could slip a few cents to, grease their palms, to smooth the way to a Nigerian trademark.

Vespanest · 05/09/2024 11:05

The problem that Meghan will have with trying differing version of ARO is that people will be buying and registering the combinations of domain names, whilst this is ongoing. I do have a feeling that the end game may be the use of titles and royal, in a case of “look what they made me do”. I do not think they have let go of the Sussex royal.

Neither did I, MummyJ12, but when I looked them up a while ago they had just $2million in the bank and that won't pay for much at the level Meghan clearly expects

In many ways they'd probably do better sticking with Netflix, except that some feel this may not be an option much longer

I do wish though that Spotify's Bill Simmons would do what he mentioned, as in “I have got to get drunk one night and tell the story of the Zoom I had with Harry to try and help him with a podcast idea. It’s one of my best stories"

MummyJ12 · 05/09/2024 11:43

That would be worth a listen! @Puzzledandpissedoff

So much for the “Meghan effect”. It seems that it’s the complete opposite of the Midas touch.

I don’t think there’s going to be a Netflix contract by this time next year. I think it will reach the end of the 5 year contract and not be renewed.

MrsWhattery · 05/09/2024 12:03

The thing is though Goop worked for Gwyneth, but if Meghan did the same thing now it would clearly be copying her. I don’t think that’s a problem legally but just a bad look and wouldn’t have the same impact as it’s been done.

Also I’d ditch the whole idea if I was them - fancy homewares and jam? It’s trying to do a Martha Stewart thing and (leaving aside the history of legal issues she’s had) that isn’t Meghan’s image at all. Or Harry’s. She’d be better off endorsing other companies’ luxury products. You look at Gwyneth, she does embody hippie crystal shit and weird £200 vagina candles, that’s her vibe. You look at M&H, you don’t think jam and oven gloves. You think rich (kind-of) royals with a trail of controversy and fuck-ups. They should embrace that and advertise cigars and diamonds to other people like that.

I think he was talking about Harry’s mad proposals to interview Putin, Zuckerberg and Trump about their childhood pain. 😂

It is! We knew a group who were looking to set up a company omg trying to think up a name was exhasuting! after a couple of days we all got bored with giving suggestions and the end result was a big ' you're calling it what now?.....'

Uricon2 · 05/09/2024 12:40

I just had the horrible thought that I wouldn't put it past them to use the name "Lilibet" in some way. Genuinely hope not.

Baital · 05/09/2024 12:54

I have been lurking a looooong time.

It is noticeable how many aggressive supporters of H&M have disappeared, as the predictions of their critics have come true. None that admitted they were wrong though!

The night shift are quiet the last few days, I've noticed. Waiting for the new winning-at-life script.

Anyone want to guess what the content will be? I'll go with something birthday-related - fantastic but quiet family occasion, but no cheque from Pa.

I don't think he will.

I think that was a warning shot to H&M that he's got evidence. So they never really pushed back against being labelled grifters by someone who is in a position to know, despite their record on litigation and other public statements to counter negative comments.

I doubt we'll ever know what exactly lay behind the grifters comment - but it seems reasonable to conclude that it's a can with worms H&M do not want to see reaching the light of day

Even if Lemonada is likely to be bought, there's no particular reason to think that either it will fold, or that new owners would cancel Meghan's deal with them. Unless of course there is no sign of any podcasts being ready to launch. I remember a puff piece (about the time of the parting of the ways with Spotify) in which she was described as being passionate about podcasting and really wanted to get going again. I don't really understand why there's been such a long interval since signing with Lemonada if podcasting is something she really wants to do (especially as a success on another platform is the best two fingers to Spotify). Anyone seen anything that says when in 2025 it's going to happen?

WinnieTheW0rm · 05/09/2024 13:23

I think the current deal expires in September 2025, so decisions will be made a bit ahead of that. They really, really need the 2 programmes in the pipeline to be successes for there to be any hope of a renewal. There doesn't seem to be any word on the polo. And the lifestyle show isn't on the "coming soon" (ie this year) so next year at the earliest. I've no idea if the ARO name difficulty will upset the date the show will be released, but it's not exactly putting a feel good factor around it

Hughs · 05/09/2024 13:25

Anyone want to guess what the content will be?

I do hope it's more along the lines of "Harry has got amazing new friends actually"..

I'm getting strong "you wouldn't know them, they go to another school" vibes 😂

Vespanest · 05/09/2024 14:04

Even comparing Gywneth fails at the overheads that’s are Harry and Meghan. They must need to earn a minimum of 5 million just to break even and this is their earning window. They’d probably need closer to 20 a year to create the generational wealth for when that window closes. I do think they started well financially with selling gossip but the last few months they have returned to what they know sells. Just this time it’s more underhanded. I’d hoped ARO was going to be successful so they moved on, but I have a feeling they are returning to the kiss and tell. The trademark just seems so stupid to have ever being a real venture. The so called summer of love turned into a summer of angst.

I don’t know. All the stuff at the moment leads me to suspect trouble in paradise. Just my opinion of course.

I had the thought that they’d keep ARO but make R or the RO mean Royal. I know that they agreed not to use Royal at the Sandringham Summit but would Charles actually do anything ?

Isn't the A in ARO for "American " though? "American Royal" might be a tad difficult for the US to handle although I wouldn't put it past them to try!

ETA I remember (before it all went wrong) Harry singing a few words of George III's song "You'll see" on stage after a performance of Hamilton. Perhaps this was a sign that he actually wants to be King of America and thumb his nose at William.

The podcast isn't going to happen.

ARO isn't going to happen.

40 x 40 isn't going to happen.

"Meet me by the Lake" isn't going to happen.

And the rest.
