Anyone watching this? It's on My5. I thought the first episode was interesting. I was reminded of how popular they were and how much support they got.

Going to need proof and links for this .

They are just charity work tours. And most countries play National Anthems to lots of people, not just Royals.

Ain’t that the truth!

The jealousy/competitive thing is interesting. Who said Charles was jealous of Diana? I’m not disputing it, just curious as to the origin of the claim.

I’ve noticed that people who are very competitive or jealous tend to think others are jealous/competitive towards them - sometimes it’s just projection

During an official visit not long after the were married. I think it was to Wales. Prince Charles said - it’s not me they want to see, it’s my wife. He’s reputed to be disgruntled when he said it and that’s where the rumours of jealousy came from. It has also been said there was more to the comment and it came after he said to people on his side of the lineup - I’m sorry but you got me, my wife is over there. And that was when he turned and said - it’s not me they went to see. I can recall it as clear as day even down to what Diana was wearing that day. Not that I was there but it was widely reported on the news.

Taylor Swift donated millions to food banks on her recent tour. Millions. I don't remember her feeling the need to beneficently share her presence with eg the people of Liverpool while she sat on a dais and watched parades and dancing in her honour (although it might have been interesting and I can guarantee bigger crowds than H and M got in Colombia)

jeffgoldblum · 23/08/2024 16:49

And I can just imagine the absolute fury from Americans if they had played the USA national anthem to these two in Columbia!

@wordler The Middletons don't do drama! You have a very short memory indeed.

Has this been answered yet ?

Loads of other people do not live privately. They are still private citizens.
I mean if you just want to gossip and bitch about them go ahead. But I do not understand why you care?
And by private citizens I mean we do not fund them as taxpayers.
I do not care if their titles are taken away, although I want Andrews to be taken away.

Why yes , we might just do that 😛

Luddite26 · 23/08/2024 17:09

I wonder if the gruesome twosiome brought any goodie bags back from Columbia.

I remember that too and, when I read about him saying "I'm sorry, but you got me", I took it that he was paying a compliment to Diana - ie acknowledging her popularity and saying it in a good-humoured way.
I suppose it depends on how these things are interpreted and who by.

I think it's sad that Meghan's national anthem wasn't played back to back with Harry's in Nigeria. Maybe she could do a speech on women's empowerment through the post-modern lens of anthemic colonial and anti-colonial music: an intertextual narrative for the global future.

Hi, I always thought he was paying Diana a compliment as well. And that he was jokingly commiserating with the people who were getting him.

Agree.

Tabloids spun it in to "jealous" but you can't rule out self-deprecating humour based on that comment.

Was there anything else? I know there was some surprise at Diana's instant popularity and the crowds who turned out to see her, but is that really the same as jealousy?

deeahgwitch · 23/08/2024 20:13

I too thought Charles was being funny (ha ha not funny peculiar ) and self deprecating when apologising that people got to meet him and not Diana when on walkabout.

I don't think Meghan ever understood there's a difference between being a celebrity and being a Royal. Like, lots of differences actually, big ones.

Meghan and her VP 'fan' don't think much of Harrys' royal presence either, hard to believe he was relegated to the butt-end of a table at a luncheon supposedly in their honour. Even the VP's boyfriend got a place at the top table.

Oh dear, that’s embarrassing!

BeaRF75 · 23/08/2024 20:36

GiveMeSpanakopita · 23/08/2024 11:52

Kate seems lovely, but she's about as interesting as cardboard

This sentence is interesting because it strikes right at the heart of the difference between royals and celebrities, which I was talking about upthread.

I don't WANT my royals to be especially interesting. I want them, by their presence and patronage, to shine a light on interesting things done and experienced by ORDINARY PEOPLE.

See when Camilla goes to visit a DV charity or Kate does a thing on mental health, I don't want to hear their experiences and thoughts on these issues. I want them to shine a light on the work being done by the people they're visiting.

Same with the Queen, I knew eff all about her really but she visited places and people and charities that it was useful for me as a citizen to know about.

That is the function of the royal family, they are vessels and platforms for other people. That is the point of them and that is what Meghan doesn't understand, imho. She thought everyone wanted to hear all about HER and her issues and whether SHE was all right and how SHE was feeling. They didn't, because they don't. They wanted to hear about the causes she was espousing.

This is perfect and sums up WHY we have a Royal Family, and what their role uus.
Meghan failed to understand it - fair enough, she is from another country and culture.
Harry should have understood it but, for reasons I don't entirely understand, he has failed utterly.
