I don’t think the VP was going to hit Meghan. She definitely wasn’t impressed and was quick to block all further physical contact.
I’ve read a few sites about etiquette in Columbia. From what I’ve gathered, the woman decides the level of contact eg she is supposed to extend her hand first for a handshake. Hugging seems fine between colleagues but I’m presuming this is people, who know one another well as hugging is considered to be rather informal and only appropriate in a more formal setting.
Perhaps this is what the VP objected to. Or it could be because of hierarchy. Higher status people choose the level of contact, not lower. And what isn’t clear from what I’ve read is if hugging is only appropriate between single sexes or mixed sexes.
In any case, in business settings, Colombians tend to be rather more formal. The advice being to follow the host’s lead. I presume the H&M visit will be viewed as a formal occasion. The site I read described kissing on the cheek (air kisses on one cheek only) to be considered very informal and not to engage lest there be any misunderstanding. Hugging is imo another level again of informality. So from the VP’s standpoint, the optics may have given the appearance that Meghan was hitting on her dh.
I can only imagine therefore the hug will have been a source of embarrassment for the VP. Having viewed the Sun video, it would appear the President is embroiled in a sex scandal. The last thing she is going to want is for the hug to be scandalised and this could account for the evasive manoeuvre.
