So why give their children unnecessary titles? That seems a bit like exploitation 🤔

They didn’t give the children the titles. Archie and Lili legally have the titles as grandchildren of a King in the male line unless Charles takes them away.

They didn’t do a Hello rollout ‘introducing the new Prince and Princess’, they just started using their children’s new legal names.

If Charles doesn’t like it, he can always take the titles away.

CandidHedgehog · 31/07/2024 08:42

Yes they do. But we are talking about William and Harry who you say fall either side of the Royal / Celebrity divide (I don’t think it’s that clear cut myself).

William regularly rolls out his children for good publicity / to change the narrative when he is getting bad publicity. Harry does not.

It's interesting. I saw pictures of Archie in the Netflix series, having a bath. There was an official portrait of Princess Lilibet during that Platinum weekend for her birthday. She was sitting on the grass.
The royals are in a unique position, and it's less about monetising , more about getting them used to a royal role. Don't get me wrong, I don't particularly hold with that, but it's a difference.

Maybe you are right, though I still think William uses his children far more.

It just makes me glad my kids will never have to worry about photographers in the bushes.

Charles can't take the titles away.
It is Harry and Meghan's choice to have them styled as Prince and Princess (as is their right). It does intrigue me though.
Why not use their styles from birth? Lord Archie, Earl of Dumbarton, Lady Lilibet.
Omid Scobie announced that H&M wouldn't be using titles for the children. I wonder what changed their mind?.

What "weird singlet thing"

It's all the same childish name-calling that means a "crown" is called a "hat" (everything that goes on a head isn't a hat - I'm sure people who wear wigs wouldn't call them a hat) or Americanising "Charles" to "Chuck".
It's just shorthand for "Look at me being a rebel - I can use silly names to show I don't respect these people if I like".
And, of course, they can. It just makes no actual difference to how things actually are. "Not my king"? Well, err...

CarmelaBrunella · 31/07/2024 08:52

It's just very odd, @LaMarschallin ! By all means have a discussion, but the "weird singlet thing" is a bit of an odd one!
At no point in the Coronation ceremony was Charles so disrobed. Perhaps the poster is confused or seen something wild on social media 😂

CarmelaBrunella · 31/07/2024 08:55

I'm just trying to picture the face of the Archbishop of Canterbury, at the high altar, being faced with the King in a "weird singlet thing"! 😂
Would beat Penny Mordaunt with the sword! 😂

I agree.
And it's always a mistake to rush in with the first silly insult that comes to mind.
A few more moments thought may have produced "nightshirt" and at least made it seem more plausible that the garment had been seen not just read about on SM.
And hoping that some of the symbolism of the king appearing, stripped of all royal trappings, before God might sink in...
Never going to happen.

CarmelaBrunella · 31/07/2024 09:12

I think watching the Coronation, rather than just finding snippets of gossip would actually be a good thing to do. It's about critical thinking. What does the ceremony entail, and why? Why was Charles kneeling down, with his outer robes removed? Why was he presented with a glove? It was all explained. Now you may come to the conclusion that it's archaic and unnecessary, but at least there would be an informed opinion.

Ok. They didn’t “give” their children titles, but why “ use “ them if not to draw attention to the fact that they are a “ special” family as in “look at us our children are prince and princess”.

They were legally “Earl of Dumbarton” and Lady Lilibet” until the late Queen died but strangely they didn’t use any titles for their children until Prince and Princess were available

eta bit of an x post with carmela

@Theunamedcat I am not a Meghan supporter but can you give examples of her smiling inappropriately? I think she’s quite good at putting on an act and haven’t noticed her smiling at the wrong time and place.

Also, a lot of the things she has said (or said through Harry or Scobie) have been contradicted by reality but I can’t think of when she has contradicted herself. Can you give examples?

The one that immediately jumps to mind is this one. It's the coy, "who innocent me " yet in a coquettish pose ( and that's not saying what I really think) in a hideously inappropriate dress for the time and place. I think it's this kind of thing that has resulted in her being gossiped about by men as a good time girl as has been recently highlighted in the press. Can you imagine Queen Elizabeth 11 turning up at a public event like this . "It's all about meeeee" 🙄

My unpopular opinion is that the Sussexes should not be stripped of their titles otherwise it would lead to more whingeing about being victims on an epic scale

CandidHedgehog · 31/07/2024 09:54

I suspect the reason no one has seriously gone after H&M’s titles (or those of the children) is because that would open up the whole can of worms with Andrew. Both are non-working Royals who are second sons of the Monarch. It would be hard to justify taking Harry’s title and not Andrew’s.

Also, it would be almost impossible to take Archie and Lili’s titles without putting a general rule in place that would automatically strip Beatrice and Eugenie of theirs (either the second son of the Monarch gets to pass titles to his children or he doesn’t).

I think that’s just an unfortunately-timed picture - she was half turning around and waving, and the photographer was right up in her armpit, so it looked like a Betty-Grable style pin up pose. From a few steps back and two seconds later I expect it looked like a normal wave.

No idea what the event was, so can’t comment on the appropriateness of the dress - if it was Philip’s funeral yes it was inappropriately skimpy, if it was anything else it probably wasn’t.

Since you haven’t actually said what the time and place are, I take it you are expecting us to take your word for it being inappropriate?

It was when she was visiting a school in Nigeria, in a fleshy coloured practically backless long evening style frock

@CandidHedgehog I'm really surprised you don't know this photograph.

If you mean this one, that’s a standard sundress. People have a better picture.

By no stretch of the imagination could it be described as an evening dress.

@CandidHedgehog I'm really surprised you don't know this photograph.

I do know the dress in question (and about the tour). It was the bizarre and completely incorrect description of it as an evening gown that threw me - I assumed you were referring to another dress that for some reason I hadn’t seen not just you making things up.

Edited to say: the picture you used made it impossible to actually see the dress - I assume that was your intention since there are so many pictures out there that show the dress properly.

I think it's always a sign of desperation when people resort to insults and silly names. It implies a lack of confidence in their ability to put a reasoned point across.

CarmelaBrunella · 31/07/2024 10:12

I agree, @CoffeeCantata , especially when a valid and interesting discussion could be held.

'Also, a lot of the things she has said (or said through Harry or Scobie) have been contradicted by reality but I can’t think of when she has contradicted herself. Can you give examples?'

I think the comments from Mishal Husain following the engagement interview were quite telling.

Also, there are several different first meeting/proposal stories.
