On the point of whether or not royal charity work ever makes a real difference, I think it's generally accepted that Lady Di taking the hand of an AIDS patient transformed people's attitudes. And also her work with landmines - without her involvement less land would have been cleared. It's fallen off people's radar now and I think charities and governments trying to continue clearing mines are struggling to make the gains they did when she was alive.

AvrielFinch · 29/07/2024 14:31

The equivalent today of what Diana did, would be Kate meeting asylum seekers who has just arrived off a boat.
This is how political Diana holding an AIDS patients hand was at the time.

CurlewKate · 29/07/2024 13:53

@sausawyee I thought we were talking about charities and projects-not donations.

Donations as hard cash for immediate use or donations from the sale of a cookbook - no difference.

sausawyee · 29/07/2024 14:37

CurlewKate · 29/07/2024 13:56

@sausawyee I mentioned the cook book because it was a small local project-the sort of thing where a famous figurehead can make an immediate and significant difference. Unless I am misunderstanding what figurehead means again.

Yes I think you are.

I think Camilla is doing a great job as Queen and I think she’s more suited to the role and to Charles than Diana would have been.

I agree. I'd love to sit down for a few G+Ts and fag with Vamilla, she looks a laugh. I also feel that people who insist on calling her Queen Consort instead of just the Queen are a bit weird. I didn't like Diana and I don't like Harry or Megan.

AvrielFinch · 29/07/2024 14:41

Why do you think the fact Camilla drinks alcohol and smokes cigarettes makes her a good laugh? I thought the idea that someone fun has to drink alcohol and smoke had disappeared.

LaMarschallin · 29/07/2024 14:44

And a bit uninformed if they don't realise Diana would have been a Queen Consort too 🙄

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 29/07/2024 14:44

I agree Queen Consort sounds really tawdry.

Phillip was obviously a playboy going back years and years. But, more seriously and what is likely to feature in his will, is the woman he was sharing his life with in his latter years until he died. The DM hinted that they lived together in Wood Cottage on the grounds of the Sandringham Estate. She was very frequently described as his very close friend and confidant in the press and they were photographed together constantly. Especially doing carriage driving together. She was the only non family member at his funeral (which was tiny as it was during covid). It used to be quite possible on MN to discuss her, but after his death if you mention her name the post get deleted. Just google 'Prince Phillip's close friend'. Confusingly she has a number of different names and titles (maiden name, married name and name she inherited).

Gagaandgag · 25/07/2024 00:51

I think Louis is ND (and that’s just fine!)

Same

Agree.

User14March · 29/07/2024 14:58

@TheWoodlanders I suspect a desire to keep financial affairs private likely a/the reason on Will too.

CurlewKate · 29/07/2024 15:11

@sausawyee It is a little tedious for you to persist in telling me I'm wrong without explaining in what way. But, as I said, hey ho.

I didn't say you were wrong. I said you didn't seem to understand the concept of a figurehead. Eg tell me - is Harry a figurehead for Invictus? I've raised that a couple of times and you haven't answered.

TheWoodlanders · 29/07/2024 15:20

@User14March yes I guess financial arrangements for Phillip's close confidant were included in the will, hence the wish to keep it private.

CurlewKate · 29/07/2024 15:36

@sausawyee "Eg tell me - is Harry a figurehead for Invictus? I've raised that a couple of times and you haven't answered."

I have no idea-I don't know anything about Invictus. I assume he was when he was a member of the RF as an ex serviceman. But I'm not sure what value he could add how.

sausawyee · 29/07/2024 15:47

Yeah ...right oh!

CurlewKate · 29/07/2024 15:48

@sausawyee "Yeah ...right oh!"

What on earth does that mean???

CoffeeCantata · 29/07/2024 15:49

Here's silly one, but it bugs me.

I hate the crimson and gold Buckingham Palace interiors. I know it's very much of its period, and so many 18th century houses have it. It gives me a headache.

To me, it just shouts 'Donald Trump or some other nouveau-riche lives here'. But it's not up to the RF to change it - these places don't actually belong to them. If you look at Charles's own home (Highgrove), it's airy, light, restful and cosy and much more tasteful!

I didn't say that drinking and smoking makes her a good laugh.🙄 I said she looks like a good laugh, and I reckon I'd enjoy having a drink and a cig with her

I agree, and the late Queen’s gold piano! It’s almost camply bad taste.

The things the RF haven’t inherited tend to be quite low key. For example, the televisions. Apparently there was surprise that George and Charlotte seemed to be watching the Euros on a small TV screen. I wasn’t surprised at all as I guess huge TVs would be seen as vulgar in their circles.

Harry writes in Spare about buying new furniture in IKEA when Meghan moved in. I don’t think the RF get to think much about decor as it’s all already there. The curtains, furniture, paintings, everything.

AvrielFinch · 29/07/2024 16:04

@BeReet why could you not enjoy yourself with her without having a drink and a cigarette?

TheWoodlanders · 29/07/2024 16:22

@Gagaandgag @BeReet
I also think that Louis is likely to be ND but would never say that anywhere else, especially not on those awful FB comments threads or below the line comments in the DM. Most people who say that in those places mean that there is something 'wrong' with him. I don't think that at all. I recognise my ND DD who was exactly like that at that age and of course I absolutely love her and she is the cleverest, funniest and most eccentric (in a good way) member of our family as I guess Louis is.

DreamyBird · 29/07/2024 16:31

scalt · 24/07/2024 18:34

The Queen probably wasn’t in the coffin that everybody queued past.

Indeed, she probably died years before the media told us she did, and it was Dame Helen Mirren who had tea with Paddington. Funny how she lived just long enough for Platty Joobs. Ditto the Queen Mother living just long enough to reach a hundred.

😂
