@TheWoodlanders Damn. I've never heard of her. How disappointing!

Theinflictuswithrictusgames · 29/07/2024 16:35

Isn’t the PP companion/carriage driving partner story covered in the Crown?

@SemperIdem @User14March
Phillip was obviously a playboy going back years and years. But, more seriously and what is likely to feature in his will, is the woman he was sharing his life with in his latter years until he died. The DM hinted that they lived together in Wood Cottage on the grounds of the Sandringham Estate. She was very frequently described as his very close friend and confidant in the press and they were photographed together constantly. Especially doing carriage driving together. She was the only non family member at his funeral (which was tiny as it was during covid). It used to be quite possible on MN to discuss her, but after his death if you mention her name the post get deleted. Just google 'Prince Phillip's close friend'. Confusingly she has a number of different names and titles (maiden name, married name and name she inherited).

The lady in question was also good friends with the late Queen. I'm also not convinced that Philip was the playboy some purport him to be.

DreamyBird · 29/07/2024 16:38

Duke of Edinburgh was a ladies man but he was faithful.

Yes. Also if you Google ‘Prince Phillip carriage driving companion’, her name comes up.

I have no idea if they actually had an affair or if he just enjoyed the company of a very attractive younger woman but her identity is well known.

At one point it was suggested she might have been his daughter but I think someone looked into it and either Phillip or her mother (can’t remember which) was overseas at the relevant time. I only mention it because it illustrates there was nothing in his behaviour in public that would be absolute evidence of an affair.

Edited to say: Or in her behaviour either (obviously).

TheWoodlanders · 29/07/2024 16:42

@Runnerinthenight in The Crown it shows how Phillip’s indiscretions were dealt with in the press by saying the Queen was good friends.

I really don’t know how much of a playboy he was during his life but the evidence is pretty clear about the one particular relationship he had in his later years. It’s there to see in the press. It really wasn’t hidden.

BeReet · 29/07/2024 16:52

AvrielFinch · 29/07/2024 16:04

@BeReet why could you not enjoy yourself with her without having a drink and a cigarette?

I like an alcoholic drink. But I challenged you as you are explicitly linking drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes with having fun and being a fun person. That is not a healthy attitude to have. Anyone should be able to have fun without drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes.

The Crown is largely fictional!!

It's astonishing how many people seem to think it's a documentary.

“The Crown” has about as much authority as “a source” ie much of it was speculation based on a grain of knowledge

it would be nice to think so but we don’t know that. I agree about the likely beneficiary in PP’s Will.

They don't. They choose to believe ancient gossip!

EmoCourt · 29/07/2024 20:07

Penny Knatchbull. Surely that doesn’t merit a deletion? I have zero idea if they were making the beast with two backs at carriage driving competitions, obviously, but their names were linked often enough in the media for it hardly to be libellous to mention her name on here.

EmoCourt · 29/07/2024 20:07

Clearly I was wrong!😀

Oh and another one: Kate's "vital" work on early years is insulting to actual experts who spend years researching this stuff but are massively underfunded.

Yes! She took years to come to the groundbreaking conclusion that "early years are important". Colour me shocked.

Here's silly one, but it bugs me.

I hate the crimson and gold Buckingham Palace interiors. I know it's very much of its period, and so many 18th century houses have it. It gives me a headache.

To me, it just shouts 'Donald Trump or some other nouveau-riche lives here'. But it's not up to the RF to change it - these places don't actually belong to them. If you look at Charles's own home (Highgrove), it's airy, light, restful and cosy and much more tasteful!

It's actually amazing though when you visit, and you picture all the scenes and the figures who inhabited those rooms, the history that was made there. I've been in the palace three times, and I've been mesmerised. I doubt it's changed much since Queen Victoria and before.

I felt the same at Versailles, thinking of le roi soleil and Marie Antoinette there!

JohnnyAndTheDead · 29/07/2024 21:14

She probably didn't take an interest until she had her own children. I couldn't have given a shiny shit about children until I had mine! Wouldn't have crossed the room to look at a baby!

Sunnydaysandthebeach · 29/07/2024 22:02

My unpopular opinion.

Catherine patting the bum of the future king was daring so she can’t be the bore she is painted out to be by some.

Didn’t he say she has a really naughty sense of humour in their engagement interview? And he said he has quite a dirty sense of humour too. That seems about right considering he wanted to choose the aubergine as his favourite emoji but he was told it had to be family friendly 🤣🍆

Sunnydaysandthebeach · 29/07/2024 22:50

I had forgotten about the emoji @PrettyFlyforaMaiTai ! 😆
