Small earthquake in Chile nobody hurt - nice work if you can get it.

Please don’t lump all of us Republicans in the same basket.

I don’t have anything against the Princess of Wales personally and have sympathy for anyone with cancer.

She’s always very professional and I imagine that she wants to do the parts of her duties that she is able to do.

I said Republic not republicans. There are a number of members of Republic who post regularly on these boards, and attack by foul means not fair is exactly their modus operandi.

Edit: as the post above demonstrates

Christ. I'm all for getting rid of the royals, fire them into the sun as far as I'm concerned. But maybe the fact that she's getting the sort of support that everyone should get while having cancer treatment isn't the point to argue.

👍

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 13/07/2024 16:44

It's hardly a 'cause'. I think it's a poor choice of engagement to attend when she is effectively signed off sick.

Are you one of those people who start threads along the lines of "my colleague is signed off sick but I saw her out of the house, this is unacceptable!"

margotmargeaux · 13/07/2024 16:46

@OtterMouse
Perhaps I missed the post where someone suggested she was at work, but as she is a patron of the club there is an element of work involved, her being there brings publicity and interest.
Also I hope she thoroughly enjoys what will hopefully be a nice day out for her.
It may well be a massive effort for her to do this, none of us know how she is feeling.
How anyone can find anything wrong with her being there is just beyond me.
How miserable must someone be to begrudge a day out to a person who has been enduring a serious illness.

The sense is the same surely?

Wow anyway, I was trying to stand up for Catherine there in case you missed it, and object to the nasty comments, but I won’t bother in future!

I spent so much time during chemo feeling guilty and apologising. Guilty that I was being a shit mother and letting my children down, letting my partner down, letting my work colleagues down and letting myself down. I remember breaking down and being comforted by a stranger that no one was judging me. I’m glad that if they were I didn’t know at the time. Don’t like the royalty that’s fine but portraying that there’s a right way to do chemo especially when it’s female on a mainly female board when so many will have been through chemo, are currently undergoing or may unfortunately go on to have chemo that unless they martyr themselves they are not worthy, even if they are physically unable to work.

Well said.

I think lots of people guessed that her appearance at an event last month was so that she could attend Wimbledon without people questioning it. If she needs time off, she should have it, but she's taking the piss to turn up at the tennis when doing fuck all else. I'm not surprised, she's never been known for her hard work as others have said. She and William are a joke.

Well that's a pretty vile comment. It says more about you than the POW.

There's a distinct whiff of them both living seperate lives now.

It's separate! Gosh I hate basic spelling mistakes 😂

How do you define 'work'?

In the case of royals, it's not like they receive a payment at the end of the day, so that in itself makes it different to most of us. Kate will enjoy her lifestyle whether or not she 'works'.

But you seem to be suggesting that just because something might be enjoyable, it can't be 'work'. Yes, many people would give their right arm to be at a Wimbledon final, and I'm sure Kate will enjoy the match, but she will also be under great scrutiny and has official duties to perform as part of her role as patron of the AELTC. So yes, there is an element of 'work' involved, even if it's nothing like what most of us would consider as 'work'.

When Margot Robbie wears a dress worth thousands and poses for photos at a glamorous film premiere, is that 'work'?

When Gary Lineker sits by the Brandenburg Gate and talks with his mates about the sport he loves, is that 'work'?

If Kate didn't like tennis, would it be 'work'?

Does it really matter?

Chartreux · 13/07/2024 17:07

thebluebeyond · 13/07/2024 10:26

bully for her - two days work in the last 6 months? Most people in her condition have to work constantly.

Unless you are someone she has confided in or a health professional working with her, you have no idea what her condition is.

No, not at all the same. Republic have a very specific set of tactics. There are lots of republican leaning posters who are not part of Republic who do not resort to those tactics, like yourself. I’m not going to apologise for your misunderstanding, Post or don’t post, that’s your call.

Chartreux · 13/07/2024 17:12

Thmssngvwlsrnd · 13/07/2024 10:40

I'm glad she's feeling well enough to do this now. Hopefully this means she'll be back to her normal duties. Otherwise, I agree it doesn't look good - it looks like she's just choosing to do the things she enjoys best. Either she is well enough to be out and about, or she's not - she can't just choose her favourite engagements!

Edited

Surely most people recovering from serious illness start to venture out being with relaxing things they enjoy, before they get back to work? I'm quite sure I would.

Pointynoseowner · 13/07/2024 17:19

Would have been better if she had shown her support by attending the woman's final

TheUndomesticGoddess · 13/07/2024 15:56

Please don’t deflect. You appear to know what he’s thinking. Why wasn’t he at the semi?

Didn't he have to go and pretend to care about homelessness for an hour or so the next day, so that he could make it look like he actually did some work in case England got to the final, which he was never going to miss.....unlike the women's final. He doesn't do much if you look at the number of engagements over the years.

Homelessness yes, the Homewards project and patron of Centrepoint for a start.
Is that a bad thing?

Maybe you could let her just be a person for a while.

Kittybluecat · 13/07/2024 17:30

Cos she's not actually attending work is she.

Blueroses99 · 13/07/2024 17:30

thebluebeyond · 13/07/2024 11:19

This is the exact issue - it is nothing to do with the woman herself, I don't care what she does or does not do.

it is the response, which has lead to unbelievable anger and distress among other cancer sufferers and their families.

I never used to care if we had a royal family or not, and had no interest in them, apart from feeling vaguely sorry for them,

But having seen the attitude in the press, particularly calling other cancer sufferers "lesser mortals" I think they HAVE to go. Many others I know feel exactly the same. We cannot tolerate a society where poorer people are considered "lesser mortals" when coping with a life thousands of times harder than that of the person they are being compared with.

The attitude that this reveals is the reason the monarchy now has to go. I wasn't in favour before, as I understand the long drawn out legal process involved. And I didn't think it mattered much either way.

But this "lesser mortals" comment has really ignited something very wide spread, and it isn't going away.

And again, we have yet more of the same attitude here. She wont be the only cancer sufferer at Wimbledon. But look at this. A whole thread set up to praise her to the skies for....what exactly? A miniscule effort, which is nothing at all compared to the efforts other people are putting in to their battles to keep their head above water with cancer.

It is this attitude to her, rather than her herself, which has started this wave of republican feeling.

The institution HAS to go. We are in the 21st century FGS. Poorer people are not "lesser mortals"

But it was a journalist that used the phrase “lesser mortals”. Why are you turning against the Princess of Wales/Royal Family for something that a journalist said?

SentebalesChair · 13/07/2024 17:35

Because the level of intelligence needed to understand your very pertinent point @Blueroses99 is just simply not there.

It is a shame really.

crumblingschools · 13/07/2024 17:47

If she didn’t go to Wimbledon, in her role as patron, she gets told she’s lazy. If she goes to Wimbledon people complain she is on a jolly. If she goes to the men’s final people complain she hasn’t gone to the Ladies’ final. And because William is going to the football they have obviously separated!

Some people are just plain nasty

WinnieTheW0rm · 13/07/2024 17:50

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 13/07/2024 13:30

Perhaps those of us who aren’t hard of thinking can see there’s a massive logistical difference between flying to the other side of the world and flying a couple of hours to Berlin on relatively short notice, and can find it in our hearts to forgive him.

It's still hopping on a plane - just more hours in the air. There aren't logistic differences, just additional time.

And as President of the FA, he damned well ought to have been at a World Cup final where England was playing.

It's always a shame to see the women's game snubbed.

He doesn't make many mistakes; this one was a biggie.

OTOH, I think it's fine for the Princess to pick just one day to attend, and for that day to be the one in her chemo cycle where she feels most confident about her energy levels and the probability of no/low/manageable side effects. And so it matters less which final it was (especially as in previous years she has attended quite a wide range of matches across both weeks)

WolfFoxHare · 13/07/2024 18:05

MrsMcisaCt · 13/07/2024 16:25

She has good days and bad days as she said. So lucky that's she's having some good days now, leading up to the Men's final, isn't it? She really is one lucky duck.

Sure - so lucky to be having chemo! Wow, having major abdominal surgery, finding out you have cancer then going through long and gruelling treatment for it sure is super fortunate!

Some of the posters on this thread need to take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror.

JADS · 13/07/2024 18:07

When someone posts about one of their work mates being out and about while on sick leave, the poster usually gets an absolute pasting on AIBU and told to keep their beak out.

I don't have a problem with her attending Wimbledon. It's a bit of work and a bit of fun. Seems like a perfect deal to me. I hope she feels OK.

One final thing is that the NHS and other public sector roles have some of the best sick leaves policies, nobody is going to be doing a 12 hour shift in A&W if they aren't up to it.

After this it will be 6 months at the coal face for the Carol Concert and another new instant chopsticks piano classic.
