There are 14,979 seats at centre court. Even if every single audience member is British, that's only 0.0002% of the population - who are either from London/SE or rich enough to afford to travel/stay there (in addition to the cost of a Wimbledon ticket). Unless you are totally London-centric (which I know many on here are) you can't claim that in any way represents 'the British public'.

I am Scottish , retired now from a fairly standard job . Love tennis ( still play ) so saved up to enjoy my stay . Lots of people like me attend .

One idiot journo making a crass comment does not define the popoulation of this country and their feelings. Did you see Kate's statement when she shared her diagnosis? I seem to remember her sending her good wishes to anyone else in the same situation. No sense of "but I'm better than you of course".

And I'm going to say it, getting cancer at her young age is not a good thing and I imagine the worry will be with her for a very long time even if she is cured.

I sincerely wish you well with what you're going through, because it is very, very hard.

Gorgonemilezola · 14/07/2024 18:31

'It indicative of the mindset of the population we are living among.'

It really isn't. It's the mindset of one person who was roundly admonished by most following publication of her ridiculous column. People didn't accept it at all.

Everyone I know who is dealing with a cancer diagnosis has had exemplary and tbh remarkably quick treatment via the NHS including new drugs which cost tens of thousands a year. There is nothing 'lesser' about them or their treatment or outcomes.

SentebalesChair · 14/07/2024 18:33

Amen @Runnerinthenight

It is beyond tiresome.

People accepted that assessment of us, in the national press. (being lesser mortals)

Well unfortunately if people choose to believe a nasty phrase in a newspaper and adopt it for their own? I’m sorry. But that is on them.

And away with your ‘us’.

You don’t speak for me. I am no-one’s lesser mortal.

And next up is Willie in Berlin tonight.

Wonder what colour he will wear, and how his figure is doing these days, thin, fat, less hair? Will George be with him? Prob not because school tomorrow, but you never know!

Good luck to England, big match - bigger than Wimbledon Men's final anyway, and a more egalitarian audience too I'd imagine.

School out already so I hope George is there! Fair point that there will be little commentary on what William looks like. But predictably, if George wears a suit and tie as he did when the family were in VIP seats with a dress code before, he will be criticised for not dressing as a kid 🤷🏽‍♀️

Turnout for Trooping the Colour? The Coronation? HMQ lying in state and funeral? Was that enough representation of the British Public for you? All those thousands upon thousands of people who made the effort.

Which is great, but to save up for something you have to have spare money to put aside, which many don't in the present climate.

I don't think we can really take the round of applause for a woman undergoing cancer treatment and her young daughter from a happy crowd as a referendum on the monarchy. Grin People can be happy to see her and see her doing well, no need to read any more into it.

Yet I bet if she had received boos you no doubt would have claimed the UK wants a republic, it must be so annoying for people like you when royalty receive such a warm welcome, in fact more than warm, a standing ovation from the public and celebrities alike, must really stick in the throat.

But exponentially less enjoyable. Love tennis, hate football!

If it was one idiot journo making a crass comment, I would agree with you, but it was approved by an editor, went into the national press, and stayed there - and got support. It got huge condemnation as well, but it certainly also got support.

And has that one idiot journo apologised? no. And has her employer asked her to apologise? no. That is massive systematic prejudice and failure, not one idiot making a crass comment

But that applies to every single aspect of life - holidays, concerts, eating out, birthday presents, new clothes etc etc.

Abolishing the monarchy will not make one whit of difference to an individual's ability to afford tickets to Wimbledon or getting their hair cut.

It was hyperbole. Get over it.

Well getting rid of the monarchy as you profess to want is not going to change that.

I'm going to apply to go to Wimbledon too when I retire @Mylovelygreendress! It's always been an ambition of mine. I know someone who goes every year. Now retired too but was a catering manager.

Sethera · 14/07/2024 18:41

Turnout for Trooping the Colour? The Coronation? HMQ lying in state and funeral? Was that enough representation of the British Public for you? All those thousands upon thousands of people who made the effort.

250,000 people are estimated to have attended Elizabeth II's lying in state - 0.003% of the population, again likely to be biased towards those living in London and places where London is easily reachable; and including foreign tourists who happened to be in London at the time.

So, no, not representative, even leaving aside the fact that Elizabeth is no longer a living member of the RF and many non-Royalists had a personal respect for her as an individual which won't necessarily carry forward to her descendants.

SentebalesChair · 14/07/2024 18:41

You may presume correctly todger

I didn't say it would. I was pointing out that attendees at Wimbledon centre court are not a representative sample of the British public.

So fucking what?! A substantial proportion of the crowd will be from the UK and that's good enough for me. Stop splitting hairs.

SentebalesChair · 14/07/2024 18:44

Well thank fuck they aren’t a representative of the British public if on here is anything to go by.

They would be complaining that the balls were too cheerful by being yellow and that grass was only for the elite.

I often make anti-monarchy comments (but not from a pro-Sussex perspective). I name-change regularly for privacy reasons; rarely for a specific thread unless I know what I'm planning to post will be particularly identifying.

Too bad she's not well enough to do any of the less fun stuff that's slightly more like work. How fortunate that she's ok to watch the tennis though. After she was seen in public for an event a few weeks ago, it was never in doubt that she'd be at the tennis.

How envious are you. 😱

Edited

A poster earlier claimed that the applause for the POW meant 'the British people' had spoken. I was pointing out that it doesn't mean any such thing, the number of people there is too small to be representative, even if they were all British.
