So what?

I'm getting a bit tired of repeating myself; why don't you try reading the thread?

A poster earlier claimed that the applause for the POW meant 'the British people' had spoken. I was pointing out that it doesn't mean any such thing, the number of people there is too small to be representative, even if they were all British.

You have no idea whether they were representative or not though, do you. As PPs have pointed out, all sorts go to Wimbledon, not just millionaire capitalists and aristocrats.

The sample size is too small. Even if the audience was carefully chosen to represent all counties of the UK and all demographics (which it wasn't), it would not stand up statistically.

I’ve read the thread thanks, I wasn’t asking for an explanation my comment means I don’t give a fuck whether Wimbledon has a cross section representative of the British public, it’s irrelevant, and you have no idea anyway what demographic attended.

BemusedAmerican · 14/07/2024 18:56

@Sethera Things are pretty tight in the US. I work with people who often own only what they carry. Should I be living in squalor, dressed in rags and eating gruel, so that all my income can be donated to the needy? How many anti RF posters on here do so?

No one cares, apart from you.

Not sure why you're bothering to comment if you don't give a fuck.

What we need is a redistribution of wealth so that no one has to live in poverty or squalor.

There are places where they do this. They would welcome you!

I don't think the answer to seeking societal change is to fly off to find that change elsewhere and leave the society I am part of to rot.

I think if Kate had been booed and pelted with stray tennis balls, some would have indeed said it was representative of the British public and this 14/7 is our own Bastille day.

Serenster · 14/07/2024 19:03

Sethera · 14/07/2024 18:42

I didn't say it would. I was pointing out that attendees at Wimbledon centre court are not a representative sample of the British public.

No, those actually sitting in Centre Court are not. But Wimbledon is a huge ratings winner - last year’s final, also between Novak and Carlos, drew a peak audience of 11.3 million on BBC. The match was also streamed live 4.1 million times on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport online. And one of the reasons that Wimbledon is seen as the world’s most prestigious tennis tournament is the heritage….and the royal connection which is an integral part of that.

BemusedAmerican · 14/07/2024 19:04

@Sethera Surely that would be handled by your elected officials. Although in my experience, many of them view some people as more equal than others.

By the way is your user name derived from shepherd's counting in Derbyshire?

Absolutely! @AliceOlive what a wonderful picture and a clear indication of her popularity which backs up the standing ovation she received!

When I was a small child, I used to think reactions on the TV - laughter, applause - came from other people watching in their living rooms. I soon realised it didn't. Hence, I'm not going to accept that the 'standing ovation' the POW received from a tiny proportion of people has any relevance to the number of people watching on their televisions/devices.

Yes, it means 'six' or 'sixth' in several obsolete counting systems.

You do realise the redistribution of the rf wealth wouldn't be enough to buy the UK public a KFC bucket, a 6 pack of old peculier and a subscription to the Guardian each?

I would think it quite likely that the majority of people watching the tennis in their living rooms were happy to see the Princess looking well, and would have made some sort of positive remark to the others watching with them. She has been unwell and is well liked whether that suits your narrative or not, so
most people would have empathy and feel pleased to see her

Salemforcuddles · 14/07/2024 19:11

You would need to be horrendously mean spirited to begrudge anyone going through cancer treatment a show of support

That's the problem with many virtue signallers, so good at telling everyone how awful the world is meanwhile begrudging a small kindness to someone

Serenster · 14/07/2024 19:11

Oh, Sethera, you’ll be delighted to hear that while at Wimbledon today, Kate didn’t just sit in the Royal Box chit-chatting with the celebs. She and Charlotte met members of the 'Work at Wimbledon' programme which supports young people from a range of backgrounds with roles at the Championships. As well as taking time to meet with a selection of players from the womens’ competitions and personally congratulate the Ladies’ champion. Almost like she planned her visits to ensure she didn’t just pay attention to the mens’ game…

I think before seeking to massively change anything, particularly an entire society, it would be wise to educate yourself on the impacts of your desired changes. You can do this by living for a time in a place where wealth redistribution is the norm.

Which is great, but to save up for something you have to have spare money to put aside, which many don't in the present climate.

You must be a bundle of laughs at parties !
