If anyone thinks that the monarchy is the cause of every inequality in society, I would direct you to the £100,000,000 wedding that took 4 months to celebrate in India. Or Mark Zuckerberg's wedding. Or The Met Gala.

Inequality is hardwired into capitalism.

RocketsMagnificent7 · 14/07/2024 17:52

Forgive me if I'm talking out of my backside but is the USA not one of the most unequal societies in the world? The disparity between rich and poor there is unfathomable.

JADS · 14/07/2024 17:52

I really liked Catherine's dress - it's a gorgeous colour. She looks well. It's nice to see her and Charlotte out and about.

Annabel Croft looks outstanding 😍😍

Yes she looked fantastic. She's had a tough time, having lost her husband so young.

I have no fcuk to give.

Well isn't that an erudite contribution. So well thought out. Must have taken you a long time to come up with that one!!

"THAT is what the British people people who have tickets to the men's Wimbledon final, likely to include many of non-British nationality who are not funding the British Royal Family; and otherwise likely to be dominated by those based in London and SE England and those who have the money to travel there and buy tickets, and generally likely to be more affluent people, think of the PoW, writ large."

God do you have to rain scorn on everything? How joyless and depressing!!

I think the Princess of Wales looked amazing. She's always been slender. I loved the purple on her.

Indeed. Abolishing the monarchy would be an important step towards the ultimate end of capitalism.

I do not consider myself or any other cancer sufferer to be a "lesser mortal".

I am hugely offended that a national newspaper can describe us as such, and that can be seen as acceptable

I made a formal complaint to the national press standards body, and they agreed the comment was deeply offensive, but said it didn't break any rules, so they themselves can't take action.

they did say they were passing it back to the publication concerned in the hope that they would take action "in house".

No need to take your 'offence' out on people who had nothing to do with it. I think you might be best off doing some work on your sensitivity because it would make you a happier person. It doesn't do anyone's mental health any good to dwell on trivial shit like that.

It's not unreasonable to point out that the audience of the Men's Final is not the entirety, majority, or even a representative sample of 'the British public'.

I'm sure the POW looked great - she's a naturally attractive woman, with good taste and all the money she needs to exercise it. But, so what? Are you saying she would be less worthy of your admiration if she was unattractive, with poor taste in clothes, or perhaps even, horror of horrors, if her figure was fat and saggy?

Seriously??? How naive.

Vespanest · 14/07/2024 18:13

I could imagine if they abolished the monarchy when William was at the throne he’d probably be extremely relieved. No legal pathway, legal battle to divvy up the elements outside of the crown estate, and compensation outside of their personal wealth. Balmoral and Sandringham to enjoy. He and his children and likely a few generations of wealth and the freedom to enjoy.

Unlike you, I can appreciate when an ill woman is looking good. Stop twisting things.

Can you tell us what proportion of the crowd at Wimbledon are British? I can't.

You can abolish capitalism, you can give every citizen in the world an equal amount of money. Far quicker than you would expect inequality would be back because some are good with money and some aren't. There are academic studies on this.

I'd rather see those with money and status using it to support others and help people than waste time looking for an unachievable utopia. And I include those of us with inside toilets and enough food in that. In the First World we live in immense inequality and the Majority World suffer for our greed.

That's hilarious. I'm sure that would work in China.

Runnerinthenight · 14/07/2024 18:15

Bye the bye, Alcaraz absolutely bombed his way through that. Respect to Djkovic playing so soon after surgery. Wasn't as exciting as the ladies final sadly.

There are 14,979 seats at centre court. Even if every single audience member is British, that's only 0.0002% of the population - who are either from London/SE or rich enough to afford to travel/stay there (in addition to the cost of a Wimbledon ticket). Unless you are totally London-centric (which I know many on here are) you can't claim that in any way represents 'the British public'.

Inequality is hardwired into capitalism.

Or into human beings, really.

Communist and socialist societies have frequently just as much inequality, nepotism and inherited privilege.

Are there people really so naive that they think abolishing the monarchy would make society more equal? And solve this country's problems? It's hard to believe!

They're probably the same lot that think that social class is only a 'thing' in England.

I suspect that is the super rich who would hate abolishing the monarchy the most. Without the cover their wealth is revealed.

And yes I agree, there is no system that creates equality because we are human.

It is not trivial.

it is indicative of the mindset of the population we are living among.

We are classed as "lesser mortals"

People accepted that assessment of us, in the national press.

People who accepted that we are "lesser mortals" are also going to offer lesser support, lesser treatments and expect lesser outcomes.

In spite of most of us needing far greater strength and resilience in the day to day battles.

This is not trivial, this is massive

Indeed. Abolishing the monarchy would be an important step towards the ultimate end of capitalism.

At the risk of being accused of invoking Putin (I'm not) would you say that Russia has an equal society, or have the oligarchs now replaced the old aristocracy? I know as fact that some of the palaces owned by them have been bought up by said oligarchs, the new controllers of the country's resources. It took a while for the scum to rise to the surface there, but rise they did. It makes our medieval period of people acquiring titles and land by being good with a battleaxe and choosing the right side look almost fair. History is not so much about noble deeds most of the time but rather sharp toothed creatures fighting in a sack.

Not defending pre Revolutionary Russia, but then the UK under Charles is hardly that, realistically. I doubt the Diggers on St Georges Hill were left with a very favourable opinion of Cromwell and he'd got rid of the King.

Longwinded way of saying the RF are not really the problem, IMO.

It's absolutely trivial, in the scheme of life. Why would you let yourself get so fucking worked up about something a bloody stupid journalist said - something which I, like another poster had never heard before, so you are just giving the woman airtime.

Why on earth anyone would think that a cancer sufferer is a "lesser mortal" I don't know, because it could be any of us. I think you need to let this one go personally.

It is not at all indicative of the mindset of the general population!!! Most of us aren't even aware of the stupid comment!!!

And next up is Willie in Berlin tonight.

Wonder what colour he will wear, and how his figure is doing these days, thin, fat, less hair? Will George be with him? Prob not because school tomorrow, but you never know!

Good luck to England, big match - bigger than Wimbledon Men's final anyway, and a more egalitarian audience too I'd imagine.
