Mary Tillman says " There are recipients far more fitting. He publicly disrespected his family , ran away from service to his country. He is unworthy of this award"

She feels there are recipients far more fitting.

I think she speaks for many.

I don't really get why someone, regardless of who he is, who is British and served in the British forces would be entitled to an award presumably designed to be awarded to US services personnel. Quite apart from any other objections, he's not a US citizen and has never served in the US military

For info the US do occasionally award military honours to foreign nationals serving in forces allied to the US. There have been quite a few example, one in the article below.

That said and to avoid any confusion, no I don’t think H should get the ESPN award.

Royal Marine to Receive Bronze Star for Service Alongside U.S. Marines in Afghanistan

Second Marine Division is proud to announce that Maj. James A. Fuller, of the British Royal Marines, is being awarded a Bronze Star today, June 3, 2020, on Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, for his

Even so, a stretch to give it to someone like Harry.

MummyJ12 · 01/07/2024 14:09

Yet another debacle involving the Prince of Grift.
I agree that he is undeserving of this award. He doesn’t meet any of the criteria and by being such a divisive and controversial person, is the complete opposite of what the recipient should stand for.
He will accept it through, because he is as delusional as his supporters, that all believe that he’s some kind of second coming.
It’s all so vacuous.

Lockupyourbiscuits · 01/07/2024 12:07

I don’t understand why it’s so difficult for Harry to distance himself from the vile Sussex Squad

it can’t be that difficult to put out a statement saying they don't represent us ?
…. unless they do

Edited

They absolutely do, they are intertwined.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Harry organises his favourite sewer squad members to cheer him on outside the awards ceremony as they did in Düsseldorf, London and Nigeria.
People are starting to notice how closely they are linked now and it’s not a good look.

I disagree about Marcus Rashford. He may be a professional footballer, but his story is real rags to riches. He stood up to our shitty government at a time when they were throwing cash at their cronies while letting kids go hungry. I thought he was really brave.

MR fought the establishment, PH had the establishment come up with the idea of Invictus, bankroll it and do all the admin while he baskets in the glory.

So do I. Marcus Rashford was indeed a celebrity and he leveraged his celebrity status to make things happen that otherwise would not have done. He saw a problem, thought "I must do something" and used his celebrity for the good of others with no benefit to himself.

surely exactly the sort of thing philanthropic awards were made for

Agree re Marcus Rashford. He went well outside the stereotype of overpaid footballer only interested in luxury life and was a real focal point for action.Like Pat Tillman, he's also a sportsman (although I suppose polos a sport)

Harry could surely come to an accommodation with the commitee that the award is given to Invictus and accepted by one of the many, many inspirational people involved in it. If he can't he should decline.

CoffeeCantata · 01/07/2024 15:44

Someone upthread said that 'royals don't accept awards - they give them out', but I can't find the post - sorry.

I agree with this. It's at the very least unseemly for Harry to be collecting this award. He should thank the committee and nominate someone else, or a group of people, from IG to receive it, with suitably self-effacing remarks.

I just don't understand how he and Meghan can keep a straight face (or their self-respect) when accepting awards. I know this award is a serious one for deserving people, but some they've accepted are just silly prizes for their silly games. I'm sure all either of them ever do is: buy expensive clothes, hire a stylist, order a car (or plane!) to take them their, make a meaningless speech, get their photo taken and come home. I'm not sure they've ever really grafted enough at anything to deserve being honoured.

But they're getting desperate, so I bet he'll go ahead and take it. I just hope, for his sake, that he doesn't really believe he's earned it.

CoffeeCantata · 01/07/2024 15:47

...take them there, not 'their'. Oh dear.

Thedom · 01/07/2024 16:19

over 30,000 people have signed that petition,😳😳

PrincessMee · 01/07/2024 16:26

Sadly I asked mn to make a correction in the original posts but it seems to have gone tits up. Anyway the point remains Harry is not deserving of this award .

I’m not surprised! Americans take respecting their veterans very seriously. I’m actually feeling a little sorry for him at the moment, but im sure he will do the right thing and it will all calm down.

PrincessMee · 01/07/2024 16:29

I also agree that the fact that Serena is hosting just makes it a little bit shady.

Unless of course she is going to go up on stage with Harry and grab another award or item that was meant for him?

Guess she could always tout for more Disney voiceover work while she's up there 😁

Stunned at Harold accepting an award for founding Invictus when he nicked the idea in the first place then had palace grunts doing the legwork.

It's pleasing to read the US media are asking questions but as always I'd love to know why it's left to overseas journalists to do it while our own press lies apparently supine.

FictionalCharacter · 01/07/2024 16:44

@Uricon2 Just as an aside - thanks to the insanity that is Premier League “wages”, Rashford’s wealth is indeed comparable to a prince - he earns over 15 million PER YEAR!
I agree with Mrs Tillman, there are people more worthy of this award than Harry.

I feel a bit sorry for him too. He’s floundering without support but has really brought it upon himself.

Well it's a US award and Harry lives in the US. I don't suppose many in the UK will have heard of Pat Tillman and the award before this story. But the UK press are reporting it - it's in the Sun and the Mail and the Telegraph, probably others.

I really don't feel sorry for him at all. He should never have agreed to accept the award in the first place. He's arrogant. spoilt and entitled.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 01/07/2024 17:07

Oh yes he’s all of those. But he’s still floundering I think.

Perhaps that will teach him something.

Uricon2 · 01/07/2024 17:29

Sadly, I think Harry will continue floundering around until he gets some top class advice and y'know, actually listens to them. I can't remember what happened to the collection of yeah sayers at Sunshine Sachs, but even the best PR on Earth is worthless if the client Knows Best all the time. As we've seen over the last few years, there have been many examples of Knowing Best and witnessed the predictable consequences.

MummyJ12 · 01/07/2024 17:37

ESPN have released a statement. This must be embarrassing for all concerned.

Mother of Pat Tillman has criticised the decision to give Prince Harry the memorial award at ESPY
TallestSally · 01/07/2024 17:41

I agree that the Invictus Games is worthy.

Harry is not.

There are plenty working on behalf of/representing the Invictus Games who would be.

Nice poke at Mary Tillman too.

Wonder if ESPN are fawning fuckers?

Uricon2 · 01/07/2024 17:59

Invictus certainly is a "cause worth celebrating". Why are they "honouring Prince Harry" though? Why not honour the IG as an institution? He personally does not fit their own criteria.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 01/07/2024 18:01

Poor Harry. Destined to go through life devaluing the worth and meaning of every award he 'wins.'
