Which, I may say, is not a bad thing.

hastalav · 24/06/2024 19:58

I think she would frighten the life out of me if I was ever to cross paths and meet her. Intimidating is the word I'd use but that would be her way I suppose. No doubt she is human and kind underneath, and maybe it's a defence mechanism, but I'd be scared of her just the same!

I wonder why the Princess Royal has a better rep now. From what I can see she hasn't changed a bit.

Is it because as a young woman she was expected to be all smiles, simpering and agreeable. As an older woman it is more acceptable to be who you want to be.

Or have tastes changed, and now there is more respect for her strait talking no-nonsense appeal.

If is it just that it is now noticeable how hard she works so she gets respect for it that she didn't get before. I don't know how hard she worked when she had a young family.

Interesting, I hope her injuries are minor and she is back out on a horse before long.

I don't think she has changed but I think expectations have changed as you say. Anne was never going to be the shrinking violet people thought she should be!

Purplebunnie · 24/06/2024 20:53

I think Anne kept her head down during the Charles/Diana and Andrew/Fergie years when all the spotlight was on them and nobody noticed that she was just quietly getting on with it all.

She has been a workhorse and finally people have started to realise (me included) and now she is getting the recognition for what she does. Doubt she gives two figs about the recognition, she just does it, that's her

CurlewKate · 24/06/2024 21:08

If I had to spare one of them from my guillotine it would probably be her. Or Sophie Wessex. But probably Ann.

No one has mentioned the state of the poor horse. It might have come off worse!

Edited

I’m sure its hoof is fine 🐴.

My Uncle is an A & E doctor and my Mum once said to him when my brother and I were little that she was considering getting us horse-riding lessons. He told her she'd be better off buying us a motorbike. I hope she recovers soon.

Horses are potentially “dangerous “animals if they aren’t well schooled - but helmets now are more akin to motorcycle helmets than ever before.
Body protectors can be used as well in case of falls.

The Queen never wore protective headgear.

Mum knew someone ( Doctors daughter) who had a lovely pony.

One day she didn’t return from a hack - She was found dead on a grassy verge, her pony grazing by her side- Pony had made no effort to gallop home like many would.

They never found out what happened.
Poor girl had hit her head, falling.

She has had to cancel 9 engagements she had on this week including a trip to Canada.

DedicatedCakeEater · 24/06/2024 22:01

She had a very busy diary- no-one can accuse her of slacking. Up to Edinburgh and back to London two or three times (though I guess it's easier if you don't have to queue at Heathrow!). What a woman!

The effects of concussion can last for a couple of weeks so a sensible precaution

upinaballoon · 25/06/2024 07:55

Did last night's news say 'expected to stay in for a few days'? I think I heard it in passing. Interesting that there are 9 engagements to cancel this week.

The Japanese State visit starts today plus I think she was due to go to Canada later in the week .
What a woman !

The cancelled engagements will be why they had to announce it

Also, the Beeb report said that "Emergency services were called to the estate and the princess was taken to Southmead Hospital, Bristol" and if you have been assessed by paramedics at the scene it is highly likely that you (whoever you are) will go through to treatment at A&E without having to wait for triage. Head injuries always go through quickly as well.

We don't know if it was a fall and the horse landed on her or trod on/ kicked her, or if she was kicked or whatever in some other circumstances.

She did take some crashing falls in her eventing days (eg in the Trout Hatchery at Burghley Horse Trials) but I guess you bounce back better when you're you're younger. I must have been tough riding in events knowing that the photographers are waiting at the most challenging fences hoping to get a saleable shot of you coming a cropper.

ARichtGoodDram · 25/06/2024 11:12

People locally reporting about the air ambulance landing on her estate (although she was then taken by road ambulance) would have started questions as well so an announcement was inevitable.

This morning's BBC update

Princess Anne remains in hospital for second day - BBC News

Nothing about cancelling Canada visit (not sure when that was due) but everything for this week is off (engagements in Scotland, Hampshire and Gloucestershire, plus Japanese State Visit)

It says she was walking on the Gatcombe Estate when the horse-related incident occurred, but she cannot remember what happened.

They said yesterday the the Canada visit was cancelled. She was due to travel this weekend so they were probably not keen on her four as they have a two week window that they like to monitor concussion for

Just re read the BBC report. It does mention postponing the Canada trip. Third paragraph. Took a screen shot because bbc links are playing silly buggers atm

A friend fell, didn't hit her head, but lay on the street for about 3 hours I think, before the ambulance came, and it was a while before she got into a bed. Broken hip. She has done well but says she cannot remember lying on the street, waiting for the ambulance. People brought blankets, drinks etc. For the time being at least, her brain seems to have blocked out that part of the trauma. Just - interesting. I know only a little about these things.
Relation, in 1950s, hit head and had a few days, possibly running to weeks, of concussion.
So on those bits of knowledge I am happy to believe them in 2024 when they say PA will make a good recovery.
Interesting thread, folks, with your stories about heads and horses, and the sad one about the pony just grazing by his mistress.

CurlewKate · 25/06/2024 14:46

Is it usual for the King to send "fondest love" in statements like this? Can't remember ever seeing it before.

HadMeABlast · 25/06/2024 15:05

Might not be usual.

But it is lovely.

Well Charles has only been King for a short time and he is his own person. What do you mean by " usual" ? Usual for the monarchy? Usual for Charles? Queen Elizabeth was a different generation and Charles may have had to follow her guidelines while she was alive. What does it matter if it is usual or unusual? It's an unusual situation. Isn't this the second time you have asked this? What do you think is going on?

Does the King usually send his "fondest love" in releases like this? Can't remember seeing it before.

Yes I thought so.

Uricon2 · 25/06/2024 16:16

I don't think the "fondest love" is a sign somethings really wrong, just a different style coming in. I like it too. It sounds like something a brother would say to a sister. Well, mine would more likely be "HAHAHAHA had you been at the gin, just as well you fell on your head Sis, won't do any damage, was there an earthquake when you landed?"

But that's us 😂

Similar here too. Much ribbing and making light of things from my brother too. I honestly think it's a defence mechanism, he's a sweetie, but it masks his concern I think.

Uricon2 · 25/06/2024 16:21

Yes @hastalav think so. Love each other but at nearly 60 he's still very comfortable with the annoying little brother role. He's there when I need him though as I'm sure yours is.
