Kensington Palace have released a new photo of William and the children to mark his 42nd birthday. The photo was taken by Catherine.

Honestly I think this is one of my favourite photos of the family!

'Marks out of 10' it's just a way of assessing how much you like something; I don't think there's a reason to equate this with hatred (especially when the mark was quite high). I wouldn't usually consider the subject of a photo in the course of assessing its merits, unless it was a particularly unusual subject for a photo, which might increase the score; or something exploitative/distasteful (e.g. 'Page 3' type photo) which would probably disqualify it altogether.

Not a method I use, personally. It's facile.

It's just a way of looking at pictures that aren't otherwise of enormous interest/emotional impact. I often do this with generic photos/art work, e.g. if I'm in a restaurant waiting for food to arrive, in the reception of a hotel waiting to check in, etc. I will pass the time by marking any pictures on the walls out of ten and giving a little rationale for my mark.

Sometimes I play a game where if I had to choose one to put in my living room (and in the rules of the game it would have to stay there permanently) which one would I choose and why; whether there are some nice choices or it's thrashing out the lesser of evils. It's interesting and makes you notice things around you.

I think you need to get out more.

I wouldn't have thanked my parents for taking me to Disneyland. I wouldn't have gone so far as to threaten to phone whatever the equivalent of Childline was in my young day, but I'd certainly not have been happy about it. Not everyone likes Disney cartoons, rides, artificial environments, crowds etc. I always preferred the type of holiday that involved going somewhere quiet and peaceful. Fortunately, my parents were of the same mind as me, for once.

Oh I get it, you're one of those.
this post makes it all clear. Well done on being so clever and serious minded and superior. I hope this gives you the validation you're craving.

Clearly, I am getting out, as this is something you can only do in public places.

Why does 'quiet and peaceful' equate to being 'clever and serious-minded'? Surely this is quite a common holiday preference.

RedRosesPinkLilies · 21/06/2024 19:55

Honestly - some of these comments - mumsnet needs a crying laughing button.
It’s a lovely, fun-filled, photo. That’s all

Why would you criticise it? It’s just a photo.
You really really wouldn’t want to be the PoW, would you? She must have the hide of a rhino with all the horrible comments

Kate clearly doesn’t have the hide of a rhino - I am definitely speaking metaphorically.

Well, I'm not a professional critic so I don't see that my method is important.

You mustn't be getting out that often if that's how you occupy yourself!!

I don't care for Disney myself (crowds and noise not my thing). I just don't feel the need to be so bloody pompous about it as that poster. I'm cringing a bit for them and their need to come over as so intellectually elevated - it generally hides a howling insecurity.

Every post is the same, dripping with pomposity and superiority.

Go and take a lie down in a darkened room with a cold flannel, your extreme reaction to a harmless photo is not healthy.

Does this go for the extremely odd and over-the-top fawners too or is just for anyone who dares not to love the photo more than anything else in the whole universe?

IsoldeWagner · 21/06/2024 20:01

No fawners on here. "Pleasant" "lovely" "happy". Not fawning.

Only when I'm travelling/dining alone. Obviously it's not needed if I'm in company, but I often have to travel for work by myself.

What extremely odd and over the top fawners do you mean?

Most people here have said nice pic, lovely family, clearly had fun, William has great legs. Where's the over the top fawning?

Yes, it's the implication that you must be thick to go to Disney, and the poster is so superior that they wouldn't darken the door!! It's not my thing either - I've been twice - but I went for the sake of my children who did enjoy it and because I'm not a narrow-minded twat.

IsoldeWagner · 21/06/2024 20:03

None. Doesn't exist, @MrsDanversGlidesAgain

Alltheprettyseahorses · 21/06/2024 20:03

No fawners - lol! RTFT.

headstone · 21/06/2024 20:05

Everyone has to deal with criticism in life and with their job. Every time she posts pictures in public she is effectively working. Not everyone is going to like everything she does or wears or says. We don’t live in a dictatorship. I liked what she was wearing at the trooping of the colour. I’m not keen on this photo. It’s a bit bland and the photoshopping is poor imo.

In fact, there's been no fawning at all on either photo thread. Just people being pleasant, and others not.

Ex loved it and we went when we visited California. He had a blast and I enjoyed the fact that he did.

I don't see any "OTT fawners". Normal people see a photo, generally think, "that's nice" and get on with their own lives...

This phrase, "not to love the photo more than anything else in the whole universe" is embarrassingly juvenile.

How on earth have I implied you must be thick to go to Disneyland?

Here is my post - point me to one sentence or word that implies this.
