Hugh Grosvenor got a whopping £4 BILLION tax break from the British taxpayer when he became Duke of Westminster - what for?

Yeah.

£4bn that could have been invested into public services in the UK. £4bn that hard-working tax-payers are having to make up for.

The usual feeble protests about this inheritance tax (IHT) break being the law or tradition just won't cut it - laws and traditions that aren't in the public general interest and just exist to uphold the privileges of a small (and in this case unarguably underserving) minority can and should be changed.

Because, what exactly has Hugh £10bn fortune Grosvenor done for the British public to deserve a £4bn IHT break?

And so pathetic to see the media skirt around the issue, as they fawn over his wedding today and try to faff about irrelevant peripheral pseudo-dramas instead.

£4bn, folks!

but my point that he exactly the person who should pay more tax stands

How much more? and how do we decide who should pay 'more' tax?

I'd assume that the Grosvenor Trusts and estate operate with the law and pay the amount of tax they are obliged to pay. There's no obligation on them to pay 'more.'

Gorgonemilezola · 10/06/2024 15:13

How much is more? Why should he have to pay more? Why him and not Joe Bloggs up the road? Just because he had wealth - so do we go back to the days of 98% super tax?

The charitable trust appears to pay out millions. The businesses pay tax as they should. The trust pays tax, probably way more over the years than if the IHT had been paid on the previous incumbent's death, and the way it's managed means the farms and other businesses have stability, the land isn't bought up by international conglomerates.

Taxes are at their highest in Britain since 1948.

@MrsJackThornton and @londonmummy1966 Sorry, of course it was a wrong choice of words on my side,
but my point that he exactly the person who should pay more tax stands.

But we arent talking about his individual tax, and I've read nothing to say that he specifically underpays this

We are talking about the Trusts tax. It's akin to complaining that the CEO of Tesco should pay more tax because you dont think Tesco pays enough tax. Both might be reasonable argument but they aren't linked at all

For those who think he should pay £4bn please can you answer a few questions?

  1. Would you be happy for tenant farmers to be kicked out of their farms and homes in order for them to be sold?
  2. Would you be happy with large swathes of our farmland to be sold to oligarchs or Saudi billionaires? Because nobody else would be able to afford it. And the people who could… would be so wealthy wouldn’t you want 4bn from them as well?
  3. Would you be happy to weaken our food supply if this happened?
  4. And finally, if not 4bn what do you actually want him to do?

Several new names posting in a familiar style

Glad it's not just me thinking that. I did get the slight impression that one user is using two names simultaneously over the weekend (going by style) but is that possible?

Nope it's definitely not just you. Sometimes they try to hide it, until they can't and a certain phrase or emoji gives them away.

I can't decide if they think they're that much cleverer than everyone else and no one will be able to spot the blatant similarities.

The best of it is one of them used to berate people for name changing. Shows what hypocrites they are.

There's one poster this weekend who definitely thinks they're cleverer than everyone else.

Errrr.....don't remember those but there was a definite 'oh you silly people who don't know any better' vibe. If you get me.
