Hugh Grosvenor got a whopping £4 BILLION tax break from the British taxpayer when he became Duke of Westminster - what for?

TallerSally · 07/06/2024 09:50

Yeah.

£4bn that could have been invested into public services in the UK. £4bn that hard-working tax-payers are having to make up for.

The usual feeble protests about this inheritance tax (IHT) break being the law or tradition just won't cut it - laws and traditions that aren't in the public general interest and just exist to uphold the privileges of a small (and in this case unarguably underserving) minority can and should be changed.

Because, what exactly has Hugh £10bn fortune Grosvenor done for the British public to deserve a £4bn IHT break?

And so pathetic to see the media skirt around the issue, as they fawn over his wedding today and try to faff about irrelevant peripheral pseudo-dramas instead.

£4bn, folks!

Which ones are the Tories?

I'm staunchly anti-tory but that doesn't mean I'm not going to point out the OP is incorrect and that's not actually what's happening

Or that our food production is something that requires careful consideration before disruption

They’re not bright enough to realise the two aren’t mutually exclusive

I bet they can punctuate properly, though. And know it's 'party's.'

And pay more taxis. Hopefully Sir Keir will kick out the heridtaries from the HoL as a good start.

I can't afford taxis.

Don’t worry, someone is offering to pay for them for you. I think 😵‍💫😂

I put it down to Sunday night and drink having been taken. Some threads take a very peculiar turn. I mean, abolish the Lords? where the hell would all the superannuated incompetents and people all the political parties want to get rid off but daren't boot out get shuffled off to if that happened?

But what about the “heredtaries”? Are they the ones who hang around in the corridors of parliament 🤔😂

Perhaps they will pay the taxis. £ 300 plus a day attendance allowance, they can afford it. 😄

Following the Aston university shocker I would advise anyone on MN to vary their posting style. If that includes deliberate typos or misspellings so be it

You’ll be surprised to hear many people have opinions different to yours. Absolute shocker, I know.

The whole board is strange. Two threads on someone who isn't a royal plus others dredging up stuff from the distant past. Several new names posting in a familiar style. It's almost as if certain groups are disappointed that the objects of their affection aren't finding the status they wanted anywhere or anyhow.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 10/06/2024 12:43

Glad it's not just me thinking that. I did get the slight impression that one user is using two names simultaneously over the weekend (going by style) but is that possible?

Completely agree OP. It's not like he can't afford it!

Ridiculous, unfair and outrageous.

i wish him well with his marriage but this loophole should be closed asap. And he could survive s not of extra tax as well tbh ( and still live happily ever after)

As has been explained extensively and in detail by a variety of posters - IT IS NOT A LOOPHOLE - just that there is a totally different system for taxing trusts with a range of beneficiaries that means they pay roughly the same amount of tax but they pay it in smaller percentages at considerably more frequent intervals.

You mean the loophole where the trust pays tax? If that's a "loophole" it's not a very good one seeing as it still results in payments being made

Have you fully understood the issue...?

Is this one of those questions expecting the answer "No"?

Tryingtokeepgoing · 10/06/2024 13:43

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 10/06/2024 13:15

Is this one of those questions expecting the answer "No"?

It's a fair question...and I guess I am not expecting an answer, because to answer the question requires more knowledge than displayed by most on this thread. But, that's the problem with the politics of envy...focus on a section of society who has something you don't, and then destroy it. In this case, taking a short term gain at the expense of long term income for the exchequer ;)

And before anyone accuses me of being a Tory, I am happy to state I have no political loyalty at all, and am amazed at those who dogmatically think one party is good and another bad. Is it so they don't have to spend time understanding the issues at any point in time?

pizzaHeart · 10/06/2024 13:57

@MrsJackThornton and @londonmummy1966 Sorry, of course it was a wrong choice of words on my side,
but my point that he exactly the person who should pay more tax stands.

AliceOlive · 10/06/2024 14:51

Why should “he” pay more taxes? You do understand the term “trust”?
