NYC is filled with celebrities. David Bowie lived over the Soho branch of NYPL. He got a library card and used to browse and check out books. Everyone treated him like a regular person because in NYC we ignore celebrities. That is why people live in NYC.

I agree with you, @smilesy . A lot of it comes from their expectations, unrealistic, of only positive press coverage. So anything negative has to be shut down, or explained as racism.
They're both very thin skinned but pursue this celebrity lifestyle. If you want the headlines and clicks, which they do, unfortunately it'll come with some negativity.

Totally agree, that's the thing which makes a mockery of all their demands for "privacy" as well. They don't want privacy at all, they want to be front page news, but only with exactly the story and narrative that they've put out there.

Harry in particular seems to think it's unthinkable that his behaviour should be questioned or criticised in any way, and that it's outrageous that any news which is unfavourable to him should be printed. Although can't see any irony in him smearing the reputations of his family and anyone else around him. Apparently it's only an invasion of privacy when it's directed at him.

Even funnier is the fact that he's on some panel fighting disinformation in the media, when he and his wife are the biggest proven liars. I guess he gets around that by his justification that it's "his truth" which matters, not "so called objective facts" (which I still find mind blowing as a statement)

I do think celebrities have an inflated sense of “leave me alone-uh!”

Ive told this before but I was at a service station cafe many year ago and went to the sugar/stirrer station which was next to a table with 2 men on it. One of the men came up to me and said “No pictures or autograph requests please, not today!” Really quite aggressively I was Confused and said “What?”. He then gave it all “He just wants to enjoy his coffee in peace!!” I said I’ve no idea what you mean I’m getting sugar, barged past him to get my sugar, as he sneered in a ‘yeah right’ kinda way. My mum who was waiting at another table informed me that John Barrowman was the other man. I can’t stand John Barrowman and I was furious at the thought that they’d say “Oh some thing moan charged towards him and when I blocked her so John could have privacy she pretended to get sugar”.

Incidentally a colleague of mine was walking (and apparently daydreaming) through NYC and walked through an alleyway when she saw someone she knew and said “Hiya y’alright” as an automatic greeting. The chap replied “Good thank you how are you” and she said the good old British “not too bad thanks”. It was a minute later she realised she didn’t know him it was Nicolas Cage 😂😂

Edited

I've heard a few stories like this about John Barrowman, the man is a pompous arse.

Allegedly getting those Wimbledon seats cleared of spectators is always a 🤯moment - I mean I can't imagine the thought process (if indeed that is what happened - I suppose they could have bought all the tickets in that space or perhaps no one was bothered by tennis that day)

My DH applied for the Wimbledon ballot for YEARS before we finally got tickets. It was a men’s semi-final on centre court, my birthday, rare adult time without baby, not to mention £££. A major treat. We would have been LIVID at being booted out of our seats for there to be an empty section. We saw Camilla in the packed Royal stand, along with other familiar faces (can’t remember exactly).

It’s delusional to clear a stand and I can’t believe that anyone at Wimbledon went along with it. I have read that Catherine and Duke of Kent personally compensated the affected seat holders but honestly, it should never have been allowed.

I imagine it's very similar in London, and for the Royals around the areas they live.

That's why I'm unsurprised there are no photos of Catherine. It's been reported she has been out and about, and the SS are doing their usual screaming about "photos or its a lie".

But around Windsor, Anmer, her parents home I imagine the locals are so used to seeing her occasionally, and will currently be very protective that no one except a tourist would take a photo. And I would assume she'll know where to go that won't really have tourists.

Hard agree with that, I'm astounded that LTA /Wimbledon allowed it to happen. Absolute peak arrogance from Meghan there, and at the time (although I was still very supportive of them as a couple) I felt it was a real foot in mouth moment from her.

It wasn't Royal behaviour, it was entitled American celeb behaviour.

When Catherine and William took their kids to St Thomas's School, no one batted an eyelid. Apparently there was a Victoria's Secret model whose child attended at the same time who got more attention. It's real easy to blend in in London. Harry and Meghan rejecting an apartment in Kensington Palace was absolute madness in my humble opinion.

I don’t see why a Labour govt would be more supportive of H&M? Traditionally the Tory party are seen as more supportive of high earners and the party of aristocrats. (Though I appreciate it’s all muddled at the moment.). It is not the same as Republicans vs Democrats at all. If they believe that the Labour Party are going to worship them and agree to pay for everything, I think they are in for a bit of a shock.

I wonder what Harry has told Meghan about party politics in the UK. He's probably got that all wrong as well; and, as we know, sadly neither of them seem to be able to look things up in books or read online articles or ask other people who know a lot more about everything these matters.

DelectableMe · 02/06/2024 15:26

Good points, @elessar - the irony of two proven liars thinking they can have any kind of media checking role! Bizarre.

DelectableMe · 02/06/2024 15:27

Harry will have very little knowledge about the UK electoral system or party politics.
He doesn't seem to even understand the basics of the hereditary monarchy into which he was born.

Lockupyourbiscuits · 02/06/2024 15:42

Just to rephrase what I said about Harry
I think he criticised the U.K. government as “rock bottom “
I think Boris snub was at the commonwealth service

  • hence I don’t think it’s that far fetched to wonder if he thinks he might get some special treatment from a Labour government after showing his animosity to the Tories

Maybe he blames the present government for his loss of security and he probably thinks Labour will help him as he has shown his hand

I’m not actually saying he will get his special treatment but he has become quite political and it would seem American politics might work this way

DelectableMe · 02/06/2024 15:46

You could be right, @Lockupyourbiscuits .
He probably thinks that a Labour government will see them as oppressed victims, as per their continuing narrative.

Blueroses99 · 02/06/2024 18:50

Perhaps he remembers Tony Blair c.1997 when he said nice things about Diana vs the Royal Family, and hence has a rose tinted view of Labour.

Just flipping back to politics and 'issues', I do think Harry's a political liability and always backing lame horses. Messing with the US Constitution anyone, as a titled UK royal? Nuts.

And does anyone else recall H&M (and tbf, it was as part of 'The Royal Foundation') were quite keen on Mermaids at one point at H's behest. As were a lot of MPs from across the political parties, of course. Doesn't mean they were right. Or ethical. As it transpired, quite the opposite.

Harry will absolutely need to get to grips with this scandal, not least the Cass Inquiry Report, the CEO Susie Green's departure from the post, the Charity Commission investigation, the banning of 'puberty blockers' in the UK by the govt, and the employment tribunal wins / whistle-blowing cases / GMC hearings.

The ground has shifted tectonically on this in the UK. It is not SoCal.

Meanwhile, same sex contact is banned in Nigeria.

So I actually have a copy of Spare - a family member who I’m 99% certain hates me and always buys me shit gifts, bought me it for Christmas but I refuse to read it and I cannot get it shifted on Vinted even for £1 so it’s in my cupboard. I might play a game of ‘spot the lie’ whereby I go to a random page and see if I can see a porkie 😂😂

I have just listened to it via Audible. Hearing it in Harry's voice was... interesting

I have scoffed and muttered quite a bit

Btw - he hates journalists... a lot

Perhaps Harry will do something of significance soon to mark Pride Month.

(Not holding my breath though.)

There’s a part in spare about when W&K came to dinner at their house to meet Meghan and he claims they were in awe of her and too bashful to admit they were superfans of Suits.

Ah, yes. There was the worry that they might "hound" her for her autograph.
Because that's how famous royalty reacts when meeting a not very well known television actress. You can see it in reception lines (when people queue up to meet the royals). King Charles scrabbles to get his notebook out so that someone from Eastenders can sign it.

Indeed. Apparently they were "religious" viewers.
So, does that mean they gave it up for Lent?

I strongly suspect that this is what Meghan believes and she has convinced Harry that’s the reality. Like so much else. Where on earth has
she got this highly inflated view of herself from?

Alistair Campbell said once on his podcast that both William and Harry hate the press because of what happened to Diana and the phone hacking but that William knows that he needs to have a good relationship with the media to publicise his causes whereas Harry is always hostile.

MummyJ12 · 03/06/2024 10:44

Is it true that the journalist who wrote the article and conducted the interview with Meghan for the Cut, lost her job because Meghan complained about her? I seem to remember a tweet from her, it said that she was going on an enforced break of undetermined length following its release. Apparently Meghan was at first very happy with it and then changed her mind because she was being mocked for how she had come across? The journalist was handpicked by Meghan to write the article.

AliceOlive · 03/06/2024 10:50

Alison P Davis - looks like she has the Mar 2024 cover interview for The Cut so if she took a break it was temporary. Kasey Musgraves. Looks like a great interview.
